Background

Ace is the biological son of Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. The burden of Roger’s bloodline leaves him volatile, distrustful, and constantly on guard as a child. When Lei En first notices him in Foosha Village, Ace watches Luffy’s beating with cold indifference and wolf-like wariness. 25 28

After confronting Lei En on Mount Colubo with an iron pipe, Ace is violently subdued and healed. He comes to regard Lei En with fearful reverence, accepting him as his “boss” and instructor. 28 Alongside Luffy and later Sabo, he undergoes years of lightning tempering, Bone Reforging, Seastone resistance training, and bare-handed combat. 29 31

Ace later becomes the Whitebeard Pirates’ Second Division Commander. Personality

As a child, Ace is hostile, proud, and suspicious of others, shaped by the hatred directed at Roger’s son. He responds to perceived threats with immediate aggression and initially treats Lei En’s training as torture rather than help. 28

Lei En’s methods do not remove Ace’s temper or competitiveness, but channel them into discipline and battle instinct. He refuses to be outdone by Luffy, eagerly accepts combat assignments, and favors direct, overwhelming violence against enemies of Heavenly Court. 29 244

Ace also shows a serious, compassionate side when dealing with Baterilla Island, his mother’s hometown. He orders a memorial built for the pregnant women and infants killed during the Marine manhunt, demanding that every victim’s name be recorded and vowing to protect the island. 337
