Background / History
Lei En was a five-year-old orphan and transmigrator when he witnessed Gol D. Roger’s execution in Loguetown. He used the chaos following Roger’s final declaration to check in at the execution platform, receiving Roger’s Peak Swordsmanship. The passive immediately reconstructed his body and sharpened his perception beyond normal human limits. Soon afterward, he killed the pirate “Black Wolf” Barrett with a wooden stick and declared himself effectively invincible within East Blue. 1 2
After leaving Loguetown, Lei En traveled to Shimotsuki Village and entered One-Heart Dojo. He easily defeated Kawashima, the dojo’s strongest apprentice, then humiliated Kuina in a sparring match while identifying her fear that her gender would prevent her from becoming the world’s greatest swordsman. Later that night, he used Shave to rescue her from a fatal fall, altering her fate and receiving Yubashiri and a Marrow-Cleansing Pill as rewards. 3 4
Lei En gave Kuina the Marrow-Cleansing Pill, transforming her constitution. She swore lifelong service as his sword attendant, while he remained at Shimotsuki Village for several years of training. At age eight, he and Kuina set sail, later recruiting former Marine sniper Dadi as helmsman in exchange for protection for Dadi and his daughter Carol. 5 9 10
Seeking the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, Lei En led his group through the Knock Up Stream to Sky Island. He located the fruit with Observation Haki, consumed it in front of Enel, and awakened max-level lightning control without normal Devil Fruit weaknesses. He defeated and coerced Enel into signing a lifelong Heavenly Court labor contract, then overthrew Gan Fall and renamed Angel Island Heavenly Court Headquarters. 11 17
At Shandora, Lei En used electromagnetic force to collect its gold, rang the Golden Bell so that its toll reached Jaya, and commissioned a flying ark that became the Heavenly Court Thunder God. With Sky Island secured and immense wealth acquired, he returned to East Blue to recruit useful figures and train future major pirates. 18 19
Appearance
Lei En initially appeared as a skinny, dirt-smeared five-year-old in ragged burlap clothes. Following the fusion of Roger’s Peak Swordsmanship, his black eyes became unusually sharp and weathered. As he grew, he became taller and more muscular, usually dressing in black and carrying Yubashiri at his waist. 2 9 19
- Black hair and deep black eyes that turn azure when he channels lightning. 14 18
- Often wears a black training outfit or black trench coat. 9 26 50
- Carries himself with an intimidating calm despite his youth. 2 13
- Commonly keeps both hands in his pockets when confronting enemies. 2 32
Personality
Lei En is intensely self-assured and openly arrogant. He refuses to serve under stronger established figures, rejecting Shanks’ invitation and Garp’s Marine recruitment offer because he intends to stand at the top himself. His ambition is not limited to personal power: he explicitly plans to build and expand the Heavenly Court. 6 17 24
He is driven as much by amusement as by conquest. Rather than immediately challenge the New World’s leading powers, he returns to East Blue to interfere with villains and future protagonists while they are still weak. He regards figures such as Luffy, Zoro, and Nami as pieces in an entertaining future he wants to shape. 19 48 50
Lei En can be protective and generous toward people he values, saving Kuina, offering Dadi and Carol safety, and attempting to restore Zeff’s lost leg. However, he is also ruthless toward opponents and subordinates: Enel, Buggy, Kuro, and his trainees are subjected to violence, humiliation, or coercive labor contracts when they resist him. 4 10 16 34 42
