Background / History
Luffy lived in Windmill Village and regularly spent time at Makino's tavern with Shanks and the Red-Haired Pirates. He was immediately fascinated by the Devil Fruit in Shanks's wooden crate, believing it could make him a rubber man, though he was warned that eating it would leave him unable to swim. 1 2
Su Hang exploited Luffy's curiosity while arranging his interception of the fruit. During Benns's raid on the tavern, Luffy tried to protect Shanks's crate, only for Su Hang to take and eat the Nika Fruit first. When Su Hang admitted that the fruit had originally been meant for him, Luffy refused to accept the loss as the end of his dream; he vowed to find a stronger path and defeat Su Hang someday. 3 5 7
Despite their conflict, Luffy repeatedly helped Su Hang. He assisted Lia after the tavern explosion, helped pull Su Hang free from wreckage, and later directed Dadan to Su Hang when he was swept underwater. Luffy then performed chest compressions during Su Hang's resuscitation. 6 13
Higuma later abducted Luffy and attempted to abandon him at sea. Su Hang tried to rescue him, but Shanks ultimately saved Luffy from the Lord of the Coast at the cost of his left arm. The incident reinforced Luffy's resolve to become strong enough that nobody would need to protect him. 14 15 16
After Su Hang left Windmill Village, Luffy began training under Karp on Greenleaf Island. His training included physical conditioning, rescue procedures, knots, tides, and navigation. He later sent Su Hang a challenge letter after defeating a Blue-backed Boar. 45
Appearance
Luffy is a young boy most closely identified by his straw hat, which he wears as a personal promise to Shanks. 17
- Wears Shanks's straw hat; its brim bears a bullet graze from the tavern conflict. 17
- Keeps an empty scabbard as a symbol of his promised future duel with Su Hang. 17
- At the time of the Nika Fruit incident, he was seven years old. 1
Personality
Luffy is voraciously hungry, outspoken, and impulsive. He tries to seize food, demands to see Shanks's Devil Fruit, and repeatedly rushes toward danger when people he cares about are threatened. 1 2 4
He is also fiercely self-directed. Although he resents Su Hang for taking the Nika Fruit, he refuses to depend on Shanks to reclaim it or accept compensation for it. Instead, he insists on forging his own route to becoming Pirate King and winning a rematch through his own strength. 7 16 17
His recklessness is increasingly tempered by observation and practical learning. He counts Benns's remaining bullets, identifies the current while rescuing Su Hang, and trains in tide-reading after witnessing how easily an unprepared rescue can become fatal. 10 13 45
Abilities & Skills
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Luffy has no Devil Fruit ability in this timeline, but he develops physical combat ability through fighting, field experience, and Karp's training.
- Used a wooden stick, sweeps, and attacks on Su Hang's legs to make the inexperienced rubber user fall three times. 7
- Recognizes that a stretched limb can become an opening, exploiting Su Hang's lack of control over his new body. 7
- Defeated a Blue-backed Boar by evading its tusks, mounting its back, and striking behind its ear. 45
- Continues strenuous balance and strength training, including crossing a damaged warship mast while carrying buckets of stones. 45
Rescue and Survival Skills
Luffy has demonstrated unusual determination and growing practical skill during rescues.
- Used thrown stones, wave movement, and the direction of Dadan's rope to locate Su Hang beneath the water. 13
- Pulled Dadan and Su Hang toward shore with a rope despite injuring his hands on the reef. 13
- Performed chest compressions on Su Hang until he began breathing again. 13
- Learns to read tide charts, identify return currents, and tie a secure bowline under Karp's instruction. 45
Tactical Awareness
- Counted Benns's ammunition and noticed that the agent had only one bullet left. 10
- Follows Su Hang's warning about attacking a rubber user by targeting balance and exposed lower-body openings rather than relying on direct strikes. 7
- Keeps Su Hang's written list of known weaknesses for a future fight. 17
Equipment / Items
- Straw Hat — entrusted to him by Shanks until Luffy becomes a great pirate and returns it. 17
- Empty scabbard — retained after he rejected Benns's short sword; Luffy intends to return it when he can defeat Su Hang, at which point Su Hang is to draw a better sword for their serious duel. 17
- Su Hang's weakness list — records seawater, Seastone, Haki, vulnerable extended limbs, and openings during joint retraction; Luffy stores it in his scabbard. 17
- Wooden stick — used during his first fight against Su Hang. 7
Relationships
- Su Hang — Rival and complicated friend. Su Hang stole the Nika Fruit that was originally designated for Luffy, but Luffy still helps save him from drowning and promises to defeat him through his own path. 5 7 13 16 17 45
- Shanks — Mentor and the pirate Luffy admires. Shanks saves Luffy from the Lord of the Coast, loses his left arm in the process, and entrusts him with the straw hat. 15 17
- Karp — Luffy's grandfather and trainer. Karp teaches him combat discipline, rescue methods, knot-tying, tide awareness, and navigation. 7 45
- Dadan — Rescue partner and caretaker figure. She dives into the sea to retrieve Su Hang while Luffy guides and supports her from shore. 13
- Makino — Tavern owner who cares for Luffy, treats his injured hands, and helps guide him away from danger. 2 14
- Lia — Village child whom Luffy carries to safety after the tavern explosion. 6
Story Role / Major Arcs
Nika Fruit Interception
Luffy is the Nika Fruit's designated original recipient, but Su Hang interrupts that fate by eating it before Luffy can. This establishes Luffy's central rivalry with Su Hang while preserving his high-weight causality on an altered path. 2 5 7
Windmill Village Crisis
During the Government and bandit attacks on Windmill Village, Luffy protects Shanks's crate, helps civilians, survives Higuma's abduction, and is saved by Shanks from the Lord of the Coast. He also supports Su Hang against Benns by monitoring ammunition and staying hidden when necessary. 4 6 10 15
Promise to Surpass Su Hang
Luffy rejects both reliance on a Devil Fruit and passive resentment over losing one. He promises to become strong enough to defeat Su Hang, preserves an empty scabbard as proof of that promise, and accepts Su Hang's documented weaknesses as material for their eventual rematch. 7 16 17
Training Under Karp
On Greenleaf Island, Luffy trains his strength, balance, rescue ability, knot work, and navigation. His victory over a Blue-backed Boar prompts him to send Su Hang a challenge letter declaring his progress. 45
Notable Quotes

“There's only one god-tier fruit, but there are people who can throw punches all over the world.” 45

- Luffy's challenge letter to Su Hang includes a fistprint, a message about defeating a wild boar, and a drawing of the defeated animal. 45
