Background / History

Shanks arrives in Windmill Village with the Red-Haired Pirates while holding a wooden crate containing the Devil Fruit publicly known as the Gum-Gum Fruit. Though he lets Luffy approach the crate, Shanks and his crew maintain a deliberate, tightly controlled guard around it. He appears to be waiting for someone who can “answer” the fruit rather than simply consume it. 2 11

When Higuma and his bandits disrupt Makino's tavern, Shanks initially tolerates humiliation to avoid escalating the situation. Once the crate is empty and the threat to civilians is clear, he effortlessly restrains Higuma's blade, defeats him with a single punch, and lets his crew subdue the remaining bandits. 4 5

After Su Hang eats the Nika Fruit, Shanks refuses to kill him to reclaim its power. He judges Su Hang by his actions instead, acknowledging that Su Hang protected children and redirected Government cannon fire away from the village. Shanks nevertheless makes clear that he will kill Su Hang if he ever uses Nika's power to enslave or harm innocents. 11 16

During Higuma's escape by sea, Shanks rescues Luffy from the Lord of the Coast at the cost of his left arm. He then drives the sea beast away with a single command and frames the loss of his arm as a wager on Luffy and Su Hang's futures. 15

With the World Government and Marines closing in on Windmill Village, Shanks coordinates diversions at sea, helps fabricate evidence that Su Hang drowned, and directs pursuit away from the village. Before leaving, he entrusts Luffy with his straw hat and encourages him to pursue his own path even without a Devil Fruit. 16 17 19

Shanks is a red-haired pirate with three scars over one eye. At the time he reaches Windmill Village, both of his arms are intact; he later loses his left arm while saving Luffy from the Lord of the Coast. 1 15

Personality

Shanks is relaxed, humorous, and difficult to provoke. He laughs with his crew, jokes about food and money, and calmly endures Higuma pouring liquor over his head rather than endangering villagers through a needless fight. 1 4

Behind this easygoing manner, he is observant and calculating. He notices the Government spy watching the tavern, watches every exit while the Nika Fruit is present, and treats Luffy's access to the crate as a meaningful test. 2

He places great weight on personal choice and responsibility. He does not consider possession of Nika proof that Su Hang is worthy of it, instead judging whether Su Hang's choices justify the power. He also rejects fatalism, telling Luffy that his companions, destination, and future remain his own choices. 11 16 17
