The sighing wind brushed across Chen An's cheeks. Sure enough, it was still the Star Dou Great Forest.
This time, Chen An planned to observe his surroundings more before acting, but fog filled his view beyond the path.
When he tried to touch the fog, his fingertips could not advance once they passed beyond what he could see, like an invisible wall in a game.
Chen An walked forward along the edge without encountering anything interactive, until Life Lake appeared. He stood on the outskirts and watched Na'er in the center, dressed in white.
"Getting close to the lake kicks me out of the dream, and I can't actively inspect the Roulette either. Something's definitely off."
Chen An began circling Life Lake, moving extremely slowly. He watched every rustle of grass and every stirring of wind for a while.
Several minutes seemed to have passed when Chen An reached the side of Life Lake and looked once more at Na'er, who sat by the lake with her knees drawn up.
The girl looked a little more mature than she did in his memories, but she was still just as petite.
Moonlight stretched her shadow out, pointing toward somewhere in the forest.
Standing where he was, Chen An suddenly thought of something as he observed the lake.
The round Life Lake resembled a circular disk.
Na'er was the button at its center, while her elongated shadow resembled a pointer.
If he had not dealt with the Roulette for three years, Chen An would never have made such an association.
With a let's-give-it-a-try attitude, Chen An took a detour in the direction illuminated by the moonlight.
He did not know whether it was an illusion, but the fog seemed to be thinning. Chen An looked toward the woods, where there really was a path.
It looked very much like the place where he appeared every time he entered the dream.
Chen An did not hurry over. Instead, he quickly swept his surroundings to see whether there was any other information he had missed.
Only after confirming there was none did he cautiously feel his way forward.
Thin leaves rustled as Chen An arrived at another circular clearing surrounded by forest. It was dozens of times smaller than Life Lake, roughly the size of a basketball court.
The trees here were incredibly dense, and even the moonlight could not reach it.
At the center stood a pitch-black humanoid figure with its back to the passage Chen An had come through.
Having learned from experience, Chen An did not approach and instead looked around from the edge.
"Who's there!"
The pitch-black figure suddenly spoke. Chen An shuddered and retreated several steps.
"Wait! You... you are?"
Chen An locked his gaze on the figure while staying alert for anything unusual behind him.
"Uh, are you Chen An?"
Chen An was startled to hear it say his name, but his body remained on guard. The figure shifted and extended a hand to stop him.
"I can tell you where this is! Don't run, I mean no harm!"
Chen An still kept his distance, but stopped when he heard that the other party could communicate.
He gathered his courage and asked, "Is this a dream? Or some kind of domain?"
The figure remained unhurried. "This is your Sea of Consciousness. I am your guide."
"A guide? I've never heard of such a thing." Chen An remained skeptical.
The figure spread its hands.
"Don't you have a Roulette by your side all the time? What's so strange about an old guide in your spiritual world? Just think of me as your cheat."
Cheat. That was not a term a native of Douluo Continent should have known, and from the voice, it really did sound like some old fellow.
After thinking cautiously for a moment, Chen An asked, "You mean this isn't a dream, but my spiritual world?"
"That's right. You were born with it, but your spiritual power is too low, so you can't fully control this place yet. I can't move either. Only the most basic communication system is operating."
Chen An still did not feel secure and continued asking questions to confirm it.
"You're a part of my spiritual world, right? Then you should know everything about me. Where was I born?"
The figure pressed its palms together. "Do you want me to recite your ID number? The eighteen-digit one, 5113..."
"No, no. Save that for later. Um... where did I transmigrate to?"
"Douluo Continent."
"What did I keep under my bed?"
"It wouldn't pass review if I said it."
Chen An took a deep breath. "Alright, I believe you."
"That's more like it. I've been trapped here so long I was nearly bored enough to grow mold. If you still hadn't found me, I'd have started growing grass here."
The figure raised a hand and wiped away nonexistent sweat.
"Also, your time is almost up this time."
"What time?" Chen An asked.
"The time for constructing your spiritual sea. You're about to wake up. The stronger your spiritual power, the longer your spiritual sea can be maintained. Here, you can do anything."
The figure raised a finger as it explained.
"Right now, you're entirely relying on your subconscious to construct this spiritual world. Once you fully control it, it won't be limited to scenes from the Star Dou Great Forest.
Once you've completely mastered it, you can change it into any type you want, and even pull people into your spiritual world.
If your Roulette draws some incredible ability, you might even be able to use your spiritual world to interfere with real space."
Chen An understood. "How much spiritual power do I need to actively control this place?"
"At least the Spirit Sea Realm (500)."
"I'm only a little over 100." As they talked, Chen An sat down on the ground. "Looks like I need to pay attention to sections related to spiritual power from now on."
The figure's outline lifted slightly.
"Your time has run out. See you tomorrow."
Chen An felt exhausted. His vision blurred, and he closed his eyes.
Daytime.
Eastsea Academy was crowded with people, and streams of students poured out after class.
For several days afterward, Chen An was always the first to leave when class ended, waiting punctually outside the cafeteria.
He was like an NPC permanently spawned there.
Not only the students from Class One, but many students from other classes who passed by remembered him as well.
Even after Wu Changkong's nearly exploitative special training, Tang Wulin still looked as though the training had drained her dry, barely able to keep herself upright. Yet whenever she accepted the drinking water Chen An handed her, a bright smile bloomed across her face again.
Li Chushui, who trained alongside her, had gradually adapted to the brutal intensity as well, and her complexion was a little better than before.
"When is this going to end..."
Li Chushui complained as usual, burying her face in the table and miserably venting the negative emotions brought on by training.
Tang Wulin smiled and glanced at her, then stretched her neck toward Chen An across the table.
"Don't let her appearance fool you. She works really hard during training."
Li Chushui lightly pushed off the ground with her legs. "If I fall behind, I have to do extra training. What else can I do? I'm so hopeless too."
"It'll be fine. Once the Class Advancement Tournament is over, you'll be free."
Chen An comforted Li Chushui with words that were not particularly comforting. He knew that once Wu Changkong was assigned to Class Zero, she and the original Class Five members would no longer need to undergo devilish training.
Chen An had also experienced what it was like to receive the treatment of an outstanding student.
Class One's homeroom teacher, Ye Yingluo, looked fierce, but she actually gave everyone enough time to rest during training. Combined with his base stats being far beyond those of his peers, everything came easily to him.
Tang Wulin patted Li Chushui on the shoulder as well. "Two more months. Keep it up."
"Keep up my ass with a lollipop... Wuwu..."
