Geography and Environment

• The Dark Plane’s Dimensional Mist is black, in contrast to the white mist of the material-plane void. It is largely silent, empty, and short of matter; substances found there have generally been brought from the Elemental Plane 221 290.
• It has no elemental energy to replenish magic power. Its Baleful Energy corrodes living beings and reduces their lifespan, while elemental-based abilities are suppressed there 256 291 292.
• Where sunlight does not reach the Material World, dark energy can intrude and give rise to baleful creatures. Lingering thoughts carried back with that energy gather into mindless Chaotic Baleful Entities 221 261 290.
• Divine Aberrations are Baleful Entities formed from the lingering thoughts of long-dead gods. They hold fixed territories and drive other Baleful Entities away for thousands of miles around them 290.

Inhabitants and Access

• The Dark Plane has no native-born creatures, but beings originating elsewhere can survive there. The Dark Dragon is a half-baleful creature familiar with its environment 265 290.
• Undead are particularly suited to Baleful Energy. They can combine it with spiritual energy from Chaotic Baleful Entities to produce Blighted Undead Miasma, a cultivation energy better suited to undead bodies 260 341.
• Travel to the Dark Plane requires knowledge of its special coordinates. Returning to elemental planes requires a means such as the Dark Dragon’s innate talent, a pseudo-plane supplying planar power, or an independent teleportation array 256.
• Unlike the Elemental Plane, it offers no ordinary planes as coordinate references, making travel errors possible without a coordinate token 290.

History

Yin Ming chose the Dark Plane as a place to develop the Undead Race. To prepare for it, he made the shadow side of his Gourd Continent model imitate its baleful environment, while liches developed Blighted Undead Miasma as a means of cultivation 256 259 260.

He later established the Palace of Rest there around the White Bone Hell Disc. Its defenses included a thousand-mile barrier, an undead domain, and eight Sixth-Ring undead skeleton guards; the Endless Bone Sea was intended to produce undead capable of populating the Dark Plane 294. As undead used Blighted Undead Miasma, its dispersed energy also began to alter the surrounding Dark Plane 341.

Yin Ming and Yuan subsequently used the undead, Humanity’s Karmic Fire, and the Abyssal Will to build the Heavenly Demon Realm Consciousness. Its influence spread from White Bone Islands across the Dark Plane as Heavenly Demons replaced undead in sustaining the system 400 401 403. Later, Yin Ming’s nascent world began drawing the Dark Plane’s matter and energy into itself 423.
