Background / History
Constantine roams the world containing escaped demons and forcefully securing dangerous magical artifacts before their seals fail. He describes this work as atonement for boasts and mistakes made in his youth: capable of being a villain, but forced into doing good. 34 38
He first encountered Lynn while tracing an immense demonic aura between Metropolis and Gotham. Mistaking Lynn for a demon because of the aura around him, Constantine pursued him with a blood-tracking spell, only to be lured into an encounter with a Stone Aperture Demon and later ambushed outside Lynn's Pineapple House. 32 33
After Lynn restrained and humiliated him, Constantine negotiated a payment of five Hell-demon souls. Once he confirmed Lynn was not a demon, he proposed a practical partnership: Constantine would save people and Lynn would destroy demons. 33 34
Trigon incidents
Constantine drew Lynn into the investigation of Gaffaro Town, where he had already prepared for the emergence of Trigon's daughter. His prearranged ritual and countermeasure allowed the pair to kill her once, though Constantine stressed that this did not resolve the threat permanently. 38 41 42
When Trigon's later incarnations became too powerful for his sealing preparations, Constantine repeatedly sought outside help. He initially used Lynn as a delaying force, but ultimately worked alongside him and Clark/Superman to repel Trigon's avatar. 54 56 57
As Trigon's full arrival approached years later, Constantine refused Lynn's fatalistic inaction. He sought out three reclusive sealing specialists and brought them to confront the crisis, acting on his conviction that preventing demonic tragedy was his responsibility. 211 219
Hell and cosmic entanglements
Constantine's reputation in Hell is exceptionally poor. He has banished countless demons there, has named high-ranking demons among his enemies, and survives in part because powerful figures such as Lucifer keep those demons in check. 88
He guided Lynn, Superman, and Kitty through Hell via a teleportation circle, partly using the trip to maneuver Superman into confronting Trigon's resurrected avatar. The expedition attracted sustained attacks from high-ranking demons and depleted much of Constantine's magical stockpile. 88 92
In Hell, an unnamed pale man demanded that Constantine return his “property.” Constantine obeyed without resistance and was taken away by the man, who claimed to be reclaiming something from Lucifer. Constantine later returned to the human world after being forcibly recruited to help that powerful figure. 93 94 209
Personality
Constantine is cynical, opportunistic, and habitually manipulative. He lies easily, withholds crucial information, and is infamous among both allies and demons for selling out teammates when survival or advantage demands it. 32 42 88
Despite this reputation, he is not indifferent to suffering. He shows compassion for the souls trapped in Gaffaro Town and possesses a strong sense of responsibility toward demonic threats. When a tragedy is within his power to prevent, he accepts the danger rather than look away. 38 211
His friendship with Lynn is built on mutual distrust, constant insults, physical fights, and repeated schemes against each other. Constantine recognizes that their suspicion will never disappear, but treats that enduring wariness as a form of trust. 92 259 260
Abilities & Skills
Occult Magic
Constantine is a versatile magician proficient in numerous forms of magic, particularly spells involving demons, seals, barriers, tracking, and dimensional travel. 34 38
- Used a blood spell to track Lynn across the wilderness. 32
- Cast a hemispherical protective field that neutralized traps while searching Gaffaro Town. 39
- Summoned a small black aura-sensing figure that stretches and enlarges near stronger demonic energy. 39
- Projected his astral form into a pocket dimension between Hell and the human world. 60
- Created teleportation circles capable of taking a group into Hell through a safer route. 88
- Located Hades using a crow-skull compass, sand, prior sightings, and Cerberus as a beacon. 261 264
Demon Sealing and Exorcism
Containing demons and securing unstable magical objects are Constantine's principal duties. He is especially knowledgeable about the rules restricting powerful demons from entering the human world. 34 38
- Prepared magic circles and specialized sealing tools for Trigon's incarnations. 41 54
- Used a concealed belt-item to alter a ritual from black to gold, causing severe pain to Trigon's daughter. 41
- Can identify demonic rank and aura, including recognizing Trigon's daughter's top-tier demonic blood and Gluttony's incarnation as stronger than Trigon's avatar. 41 92
- Intended to bind Trigon inside his own body using demonic inscriptions, then have Lynn kill him with a prepared blade if no other solution remained. 56
Survival, Deception, and Negotiation
Constantine relies on preparation, escape routes, contacts, and misdirection as much as direct magic.
- Keeps hidden magical tools and sealing items on his person, including items disguised as ordinary clothing accessories. 41 54
- Placed a spatial-anchor marker inside a lighter given to Lynn, allowing him to monitor and later locate Lynn. 60
- Forced Papa Midnite to provide tracking items during his search for Lynn. 60
- Uses street-level cons and theft when convenient, including stealing a lighter through a distraction trick. 82

- Crow-skull compass — Divination tool used to trace Hades. 261
Relationships

- Clark Kent / Superman — Ally whose overwhelming power repeatedly rescued Constantine from Trigon and Hell's demons. Constantine was immediately struck by Clark's strength and attempted to befriend him, only for Lynn to interfere. 57 92
- Kitty / Schrodinger — Lynn's demonic cat companion. Constantine is wary of Kitty's unusual nature and has been physically assaulted by it on multiple occasions. 54 88
- Trigon — Major demonic adversary. Constantine has repeatedly tried to stop or seal Trigon's incarnations and views the demon's invasion of Earth as unacceptable. 54 56
- Gabriel — Angel Constantine brought Lynn to meet as both a test and a hoped-for lesson. Constantine is visibly intimidated by Gabriel and later warns Lynn to stay away from him. 84 85
- Papa Midnite — Occult supplier from whom Constantine forcibly acquired tracking items while searching for Lynn. 60
