| Aged legendary swordsman | 3 | Imprisoned in Impel Down’s Infinite Hell. Though he believed his peak was behind him, he was renowned as a solitary fighter once able to stand alongside Roger and Whitebeard. |
| Vampire Fruit user | 143 145 | Found and consumed the hidden Bat-Bat Fruit, Vampire Form beneath Sleepy Town. By drinking blood, he restored his youth, regained flight through bat wings, and could divide into bats. |
| Blood-sustained combat form | 149 | Repeatedly escaped the combined pursuit of Zephyr, Kizaru, and Aokiji by dispersing into bats, feeding on living creatures, and rebuilding his strength. |
| Rejuvenated prime | 156 157 174 | Sea King blood restored him from extreme old age to a middle-aged state; Aokiji’s blood further rejuvenated him. His restored youth returned his overall strength to the era’s pinnacle, though it remained dependent on blood. |
Background
Patrick Redfield was the legendary “Red Count,” a lone wanderer of the old era who stood on equal footing with Roger and Whitebeard without a crew of his own. His inability to naturally trust others stemmed in part from his exceptional Observation Haki, which exposed the hidden thoughts, fear, jealousy, and hostility of nearly everyone around him. He became known as “Red the Aloof,” living as an isolated figure rather than forming companions. 3 139
Red had encountered Douglas Barrett during Barrett’s time aboard Roger’s ship. While imprisoned alongside him in Infinite Hell for roughly twenty years, Red repeatedly read Barrett’s heart—until roughly half a year before their escape, when Barrett became unreadable to him. 3
Barrett freed Red from his Sea-Prism Stone restraints, not to recruit him, but because he wanted Red restored to his prime as a future rival worth defeating. Red initially doubted that he could ever recover his former strength, but followed Barrett’s lead toward Sleepy Town after learning that something capable of restoring him was hidden there. 3
Appearance
Red’s appearance changes dramatically depending on his blood reserves and the Vampire Fruit’s restoration.
- Aged appearance — Silver-haired, wrinkled, and dressed with aristocratic precision in a black-and-crimson cloak, tall black top hat, formal suit, and black-and-white prison uniform after his escape from Impel Down. 3 139
- Youthful appearance — A tall, powerfully built young man with sharp eyes, blood-red lips, visible fangs, a crimson cape, and red formal clothing. 145
- Vampire traits — Broad black bat wings emerge in his transformed state; he can disperse his body into black smoke and swarms of bats. 145 149
- Weapon — Carries an umbrella concealing a slender rapier. 141 200
Personality
Red is composed, aristocratic, and deeply self-contained. He treats solitude as neither frightening nor painful, and his ability to perceive people’s concealed motives has left him distrustful of outward kindness and companionship. 139
Despite his aloofness, he respects genuine strength. Barrett’s certainty that Red could reclaim his prime visibly affected him, and Red later acknowledged his debt for both the Vampire Fruit and his rescue. 3 157
His combat demeanor is elegant rather than reckless. Even while cornered by three Admiral-level opponents, Red met the situation with dry sarcasm and formal poise. 142 149 After recovering his youth, however, his manner also gained a sharper arrogance and an increasingly wild edge. 145 195
Abilities & Skills
Mythical Zoan: Bat-Bat Fruit, Vampire Form
Red’s Mythical Zoan allows him to restore youth, vitality, and combat ability by consuming blood.
- Regains strength and a younger body by drinking animal or human blood. 145 156 157
- Transforms into black bats or black smoke, allowing flight, evasive dispersal, and rapid reconstruction. 145 149
- Can abandon portions of his bat form to evade lethal attacks before reconstituting elsewhere. 149
- Sustained a three-day battle against Zephyr, Kizaru, and Aokiji by repeatedly escaping to feed and recover. 149 160
- Drained the blood of most of the Marines deployed against him, including thousands of elite soldiers. 149 160
- His restored youth is not permanent; the life force acquired through blood is external power and eventually runs out. 174 266
Observation Haki
Red’s Observation Haki is described as having reached its absolute pinnacle.
- Sees directly into people’s hearts and perceives their concealed motives. 139
- Used this perception to anticipate the Marines’ plans and repeatedly evade their attempts to surround him. 149
- Previously read Barrett’s thoughts in Infinite Hell, but became unable to see through him after Barrett’s transformation. 3
Conqueror’s Haki
Red can wield Conqueror’s Haki in direct combat.
- Coated his umbrella-rapier slash with Conqueror’s Haki when opening his battle with Kizaru. 140
- His Haki-infused swordsmanship made Kizaru’s usual elemental evasion unreliable during their duel. 141
- His clashes with Kaido generated black lightning and shockwaves that shook both fleets. 263
Fantasia Swordsmanship
Red’s rapier techniques manifest poetic imagery and destructive sword realms rather than simple slashes.
- First Movement: Revelry — Summons hazy figures and musical imagery; extinguishes flames and hinders Kizaru’s movements. 140
- Fantasia, Chapter Two: Drunk Alone — A space-piercing thrust that forced Kizaru into desperate evasion. 141
- Fantasia, Chapter Three: Listening to Snow — Creates a snowflake-like image in the sky, cuts through Kizaru’s laser barrage, and leaves him heavily wounded. 141
- Night Fantasia, Chapter Four: Dream Return — Forms a vast castle-shaped sword strike against Zephyr. 142
- Night Fantasia, Chapter Thirteen: Crimson Sun — His final technique against Kizaru inside Aokiji’s ice dome. 149
- Third Chapter of Night Fantasia: Listening to Snow — Manifested a tangible, sorrowful sword realm while clashing with Kaido. 263
Equipment
- Umbrella-rapier — A round umbrella that conceals Red’s slender thrusting sword. 141 200
- Black-and-crimson cloak — Worn during his aged period and early confrontation with the Marines. 139 141
- Crimson cape and formal suit — His attire after reclaiming youth through the Vampire Fruit. 145
Relationships
- Douglas Barrett / Bullet — Former fellow prisoner and eventual captain. Bullet freed Red, directed him to the Vampire Fruit, rescued him from the Marines, and later appointed him vice-captain. Red acknowledges owing Bullet two favors. 3 150 157 189
- Roger — A former rival whose heart Red could not read. Red fought Roger multiple times and considered Roger stronger at full strength. 3 157
- Whitebeard — Old-era peer and rival. Red later used his blood-based power to temporarily restore Whitebeard’s youth in battle. 3 262 279 281
- Kizaru — Marine Admiral who pursued Red at Sleepy Town. Red overwhelmed and wounded him in their first duel before their later prolonged battle. 140 141 149
- Aokiji — Participated in the three-man campaign against Red; after Bullet captured him, Red drained his blood to restore his own vitality. 142 157
- Zephyr — Former acquaintance and one of the three Marine fighters deployed against him. Zephyr’s intervention helped force Red into the underground cavern where he found the Vampire Fruit. 142 143 149
- Douglas Gray — Fellow senior officer in the Demon God Pirates. Red recognizes Gray’s longstanding brutality and compares him to Bullet. 178 180
- Kaido — Opponent during the Tottoland conflict. Red could match Kaido’s attacks, but Kaido’s awakened Mythical Zoan endurance forced Red to expend blood-derived life force. 263 266 278
Story Role / Major Arcs
Impel Down Escape
Red was imprisoned in Infinite Hell when Bullet broke free and unlocked his cell. Their connection began as mutual recognition between two solitary fighters, not friendship: Bullet wanted Red restored only so he could someday defeat him himself. 3
Sleepy Town and the Vampire Fruit
Acting on Bullet’s information, Red searched Sleepy Town for a Devil Fruit capable of restoring his youth. Kizaru, Aokiji, and a Buster Call cornered him; Zephyr later joined the battle. Red ultimately reached the underground cavern, consumed the Vampire Fruit, and escaped in bat form after appearing defeated. 140 143 145
Three-Admiral Pursuit
After regaining youth, Red fought Zephyr, Kizaru, and Aokiji for three days and three nights. His blood-feeding regeneration repeatedly frustrated their encirclement, but he was eventually exhausted after draining the island’s available life and was critically wounded by Kizaru. Bullet arrived before the Marines could secure him. 149 150 160
Recovery and Demon God Pirates
Bullet restored Red with Sea King and Aokiji blood, allowing him to recover youth and fighting power. At Thunder God Island, Red revealed his identity by intercepting Tigress and wounding him in a single strike. He formally joined the Demon God Pirates as vice-captain after the battle. 156 157 179 189
Tottoland War
Red fought Kaido directly during the conflict between the Demon God Pirates, Beast Pirates, Big Mom Pirates, and Whitebeard Pirates. He used his sword realm against Kaido but visibly aged as he burned blood-derived life force to maintain his strength. 263 266
Red later gave Whitebeard a temporary restoration of youth, warning that the borrowed life energy would last no more than three minutes. Afterward, he transformed into bats and pursued the retreating Katakuri. 279 281
