Background

Teach once regarded Edward Newgate as “Pops” and wanted to help the Whitebeard Pirates claim the One Piece. Over time, that loyalty curdled into a plan to inherit Whitebeard’s territories, influence, and Tremor-Tremor Fruit for himself 22.

He waited aboard Whitebeard’s ship for decades for the Dark-Dark Fruit to appear. Once he obtained it, he killed Thatch, assembled a crew, captured Ace, and traded Ace to the Marines for a Seven Warlord position 7.

Personality

Teach is patient, opportunistic, and willing to endure years of obscurity for a single opportunity. He can act decisively and ruthlessly once that opportunity appears, as shown by his murder of Thatch and capture of Ace 7.

Despite his ambition, Teach is highly self-preserving. Barrett’s overwhelming strength repeatedly reduces him to fear, compliance, and private resentment; he remains with the Demon God Pirates because he believes leaving would mean immediate death 15 109 111. He covets powerful Devil Fruits and envies the abilities granted to his crewmates, particularly Shiryu’s More-More Fruit and Jinbe’s Strong-Strong Fruit 134 186.

Impel Down

Teach enters Infinite Hell as a newly appointed Seven Warlord to recruit prisoners for the Blackbeard Pirates 1. His scheme collapses when Barrett escapes, reveals Teach’s plan to steal Whitebeard’s fruit, and overwhelms Teach’s crew with ease 6 7.

Barrett forces Teach to release the prisoners stored in his Dark Vortex and later coerces him into extracting Luffy’s Devil Fruit. Teach gains Luffy’s ability but is left stranded at Impel Down’s port when Barrett departs 12 15 17 19.

Demon God Pirates

Teach joins the Demon God Pirates under Barrett’s control and participates in the Marineford conflict as part of the new force 38. He remains outwardly obedient while privately searching for a chance to obtain another powerful fruit and escape Barrett’s shadow 109 111.

Final Duel and Awakening

Teach faces Ace in a one-year-later duel. Ace overwhelms him with superior Haki and apparently decapitates him, but Teach survives through a hidden transformation triggered by war drums 339 340.

He awakens both the Nika and Dark-Dark Fruits, kills Ace, and declares himself a god. Shanks attempts to send him one thousand years into the future, but Barrett intercepts Teach with reverse teleportation and reveals that Teach is already inside his stomach 341.
