Background

Whitebeard was formerly a member of the Rocks Pirates, alongside figures including Kaido and Charlotte Linlin. He and Neptune were old acquaintances when Whitebeard was younger; in return for past favors, Whitebeard placed Fish-Man Island under his protection. 125 238 239

He built the Whitebeard Pirates around chosen family rather than bloodline. His crew addresses him as “Pops” or “Dad,” and he regards its members as his sons. This loyalty remained intact even after the Marines devastated the crew at Marineford: hundreds of pirates willingly offered their blood to keep him alive. 26 75

By the time of the Marineford War, Whitebeard’s accumulated injuries and illness had left him dependent on medical care and unable to fight at his former peak for long. Trafalgar Law’s operation prolonged his life, but did not stop his physical decline. 51 74 199

Whitebeard is fiercely paternal. During Ace’s execution, he accepts responsibility for Ace pursuing Blackbeard rather than allowing Ace to blame himself, and he is willing to sacrifice his own life to save him. 27 53

His sense of honor is equally uncompromising. He agrees to help Douglas Bullet without first knowing the terms, stating that he will accept any condition so long as his family is not harmed. He later honors that promise by joining Bullet’s campaign in Tottoland despite his failing health. 71 100 245

Whitebeard arrives at Marineford aboard the submerged Moby Dick with his fourteen division commanders, after his allied fleet of forty-three ships draws Marine attention. He opens the battle by cracking the air and summoning enormous tsunamis. 26 27

He leads the rescue effort for Ace, rallies his forces into the plaza, kills Giant Vice Admiral Ronz, and repeatedly clashes with the Admirals. 36 42 43

After the Moby Dick is destroyed, Whitebeard forms a temporary alliance with Bullet’s Demon God Pirates. He fights Akainu while his own stamina and Haki diminish, then is gravely wounded by Akainu and Kizaru’s combined assault. 37 41 50 53

Refusing to stop, Whitebeard splits Marineford and destroys the Justice Fortress in an attempt to force a path to Ace. 54

Recovery and Return to the New World

Following Marineford, Whitebeard collapses from internal injuries, fractures, and blood loss. Marco’s healing is insufficient, and the crew relies on George Black’s Blood-Blood Fruit to stabilize him until Law can provide treatment. 74 75
