Background / History
Bobby was discovered alone in a snowy alley by Lin Mo, who found him freezing objects and sculpting an ice rose. Terrified that people would see him as a monster, Bobby revealed that his parents had driven him out because of his powers. Lin Mo gave him coffee, a scarf, blankets, and reassurance that being different did not make him monstrous 53.
He attended Midtown High School and wanted to remain there despite repeated accidents caused by his cryokinesis, including freezing a classmate's milk, his textbook, and later a biology-class frog. His parents wanted to send him to a distant “special school” in northern New York, but Bobby wanted an ordinary life: friends, basketball tryouts, and a chance to fit in 54.
Lin Mo offered his garage as a safe place to train, while Peter Parker volunteered to help him with physics, basketball, and a body-temperature monitor. Under Lin Mo's guidance, Bobby learned to approach his power gently rather than trying to suppress it through force 54 59.
Appearance
Bobby is a slight teenage boy whose reserved posture and clothing initially reflect his insecurity. When first visiting Lin Mo's shop, he concealed much of his face behind a scarf and carried a worn backpack 54.
- Often wears a gray scarf, sometimes pulled up over his face 54 61.
- Has bright but uneasy eyes when first introduced 54.
- His hands and eyelashes can gather frost when his power is active or unstable 59 92.
- Blushes noticeably when nervous, especially around Rose or when receiving attention 65 70 178.
- Uses ice-sculpting tools, including an ice chisel, ice brush, and ice shovel 205 216 312.
Personality
Bobby begins as anxious, self-conscious, and deeply afraid of hurting others. His fear of losing control causes him to avoid attention, hide his hands, and assume that his ability makes him abnormal 54 61.
He is nevertheless gentle and thoughtful. He worries about his sculptures scratching children, secretly leaves an ice sculpture of Shield as a gift, and uses subtle ice crystals to preserve children's creations overnight 59 92 127.
With support from Lin Mo, Rose, Peter, Ted, and the Queens community, Bobby becomes more confident without losing his kindness. He gradually accepts public praise, teaches children, organizes fundraisers, and speaks openly against the idea that ability users are monsters 61 127 178 205.
Abilities & Skills
Cryokinesis
Bobby can lower temperatures, freeze liquids and objects, and generate ice from his hands.
- Initially froze objects involuntarily when frightened or distracted, including pipes, textbooks, drinks, and classroom materials 54 59 70 110.
- Can cool objects without fully freezing them after training with Lin Mo 59.
- Can freeze ground, create barriers, and form ice traps and spikes in combat 90 216 298.
- Sustained large-scale ice production exhausts him; maintaining the fundraiser sculptures required constant output and significantly more energy than ordinary freezing 92.
Ice Shaping and Ice Silk
Bobby can precisely shape ice into sculptures, tools, structures, and small functional details.
- Created ice roses, dogs, rabbits, birds, walls, targets, and detailed character sculptures 53 59 61 65 178 233.
- Uses Ice Silk, fine strands of ice energy suited to detailed sculpting, repairs, anti-slip pads, and reinforcing damaged barriers 171 178.
- Used Ice Silk to sort contaminated spaceship parts by temporarily isolating their sticky coating in ice 222.
- His ice art became a practical tool for fundraising, teaching, community morale, and gifts 92 127 182 205 207.
Defensive Ice Constructs
Bobby can create defensive structures and modify them for specific threats.
- Created ice paths to improve allies' mobility during training 72.
- Constructed ice walls, shell-like protection, ice prisons, and terrain traps 59 171 216 256.
- Used anti-electric ice mixed with Magnetic Herb powder to contain Electro 154.
- Reinforced ice walls with anti-energy runes and Healing Grass juice, enabling them to reflect energy attacks 287.
- Can add ice hooks to Peter's Web Wings and create traps for enemy movement 291 298.
Anti-Assimilation Ice
Bobby can use a specialized ice material resistant to melting or hostile assimilation.
- Used it for glowing details in ice sculptures and durable gifts 178 208.
- Created anti-slip pads and the eyes of an ice bird with it 178.
- Used it in defensive preparations and proposed it for freezing enemy equipment non-lethally 209.
Ice-and-Thunder Constructs
Bobby can cooperate with Lin Mo's lightning to create charged ice pellets.
- Forms ice pellets around raindrops, allowing lightning to curl across their surfaces 146.
- The charged pellets can power Rose's Fluorescent Grass and serve as decorative lights 146.
- Requires careful power limits; stronger electrical output can crack or dangerously destabilize the pellets 146.
Ice Sculpting
Bobby is an accomplished sculptor whose skill develops alongside his control.
- Declined a professional apprenticeship because he still wanted to become a firefighter 61.
- Taught children conventional sculpting techniques, including sketching, carving, and bonding ice pieces with warm water 127.
- Created the collaborative Ice Flower Fountain, which won the New York Contemporary Art Exhibition's Best Creative Award 205.
- Uses sculpture as both practice and a way to help the community accept ability users 127 178 205.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Ice shovel — Used to spread Ice Silk, create barriers, trap enemies, and deploy ice spikes 216 259.
- Ice chisel and carving tools — Used for detailed sculpture work; one shovel was chipped by Corvus Glaive's blade 205 312.
- Energy slot for ice shovel — Stark-provided upgrade that allows the shovel to deploy Ice Mist Bombs 287.
- Confidence Badge — A warm metal badge made by Lin Mo, engraved with an ice flower to remind Bobby of his worth before the New York Contemporary Art Exhibition 205.
- Ice ring — Hand-carved from Asgardian Sacred Spring ice, decorated with vine patterns and set with Rose's Eternal Flower Seed 292.
- Life-saving badge — A healing badge given before the war; it healed a cut on Bobby's finger without leaving a scar 293.
Relationships
- Lin Mo — Mentor, protector, and close friend. Lin Mo gives Bobby shelter, teaches him control, supports his school life, and helps him confront fear of discrimination 53 54 59 205.
- Rose — Close friend and romantic partner. They support one another's abilities, collaborate on ice-and-flower art, and make a private promise before the war 65 182 205 292.
- Peter Parker — Friend and fellow ability user. Peter offers help with basketball, physics, and temperature-control equipment; the two later coordinate their ice and webbing in combat 54 55 301.
- Ted — Friend and enthusiastic documentarian. Ted promotes Bobby's art, records his growth, and often creates opportunities for him to be recognized 61 178 205.
- Shield — Bobby shares a gentle bond with the dog, creating ice dogs, a bow-wearing sculpture, and a durable ice bone toy for him 59 208.
- Emily — Midtown High classmate and Bobby's early crush. Bobby successfully dances with her after practicing control, and she agrees to dance with him again the following year 55.
- Bobby's parents — Initially rejected and feared his abilities, considering sending him to a distant special school after his accidents 54.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival in Queens and Early Training
Bobby enters the story as a frightened runaway who believes his cryokinesis has made him a monster. Lin Mo's acceptance gives him a place to sleep, a practice space, and the confidence to remain at Midtown High rather than immediately leave for a special school 53 54.
Learning Normalcy
Bobby uses practical strategies, including an ice pack and later Peter's planned temperature-control device, to navigate the school dance. His successful dance with Emily proves that mistakes and anxiety do not prevent him from having an ordinary teenage life 55.
Ice Lessons and Community Belonging
Training under Lin Mo turns Bobby's destructive freezing into precise temperature control, protective constructs, and ice art. He discovers his ambition to become a firefighter, using ice to put out fires and stabilize damaged buildings 59.
He grows close to Rose after introducing her to Lin Mo's group. Their shared experience as young Mutants transforms the repair shop into a safe place where neither has to hide 65.
Artist and Community Helper
Bobby uses ice sculptures to raise $1,365 for postwar reconstruction, teaches children sculpting, and preserves their work with subtle cryokinesis. These experiences shift his view of his ability from a secret to a means of comforting others 92 127.
He later overcomes fear of public exposure at the New York Contemporary Art Exhibition, where the Ice Flower Fountain earns the Best Creative Award 205.
Defender of Queens
Bobby becomes a key member of the Queens defense network, providing ice paths, walls, traps, anti-energy defenses, and battlefield support. His tactics consistently emphasize restraint and containment as well as direct offense 72 162 216 287.
During the battle against Thanos's forces, he and Rose restrain Corvus Glaive through coordinated ice attacks, weakening pollen, and vines. Though wounded, Bobby later helps Peter capture Proxima Midnight and delivers the Star Iron-laced ice spike that helps neutralize Corvus 298 301.
Confidence and Public Advocacy
By the time he teaches an ice-sculpting class in the community square, Bobby openly rejects the claim that ability users are monsters. He defines people by how they use their gifts, not by the gifts themselves 178.
Notable Quotes
“I want to be a firefighter.” 59
“Having abilities isn't scary. What's scary is using them to do bad things. If we use our abilities to help people and protect the community, then we aren't monsters.” 178
“My ice can do more than fight Ice Monsters. It can make ice sculptures and help people. That's enough.” 178
