Background

Thor is Odin's son and Asgard's prince. Before arriving on Midgard, Odin banishes him and strips him of the right to wield Mjolnir; by the time Jane Foster and Erik Selvig encounter him in New Mexico, he is stranded, powerless, and dismissed as a delusional man claiming to be Thor. 57 58

His exile becomes a crisis of identity when Mjolnir rejects him completely. Thor's certainty that no one else could lift the hammer is shattered when Lu Xi forcibly takes it, temporarily receiving the hammer's thunder-based Divine Power instead. 58 59

His pride is repeatedly tempered by humiliation and loss. Mjolnir's rejection devastates him, while his defeat by Pierce without the hammer exposes how much of his confidence was tied to his weapon. 58 109 Despite this, Thor is fundamentally self-sacrificing: when the Destroyer threatens others, he refuses to flee and offers his own life to stop the danger. 60

Worthiness and Restoration

Loki deceives Thor into believing Odin has died and that he is permanently exiled. Once the Destroyer attacks, Thor offers himself to save Jane and the other Asgardians; his sacrifice restores his worthiness, though Lu Xi must first correct the fatal consequence of having taken Thor's Power. 60

Return to Asgard
