Background

Murong Brothers is a single person, not a pair or group. An only child, he envied people with siblings and asked his father why he had none; his father responded by renaming him “Murong Brothers.” The name stuck so thoroughly that even his parents and lovers use it. 45

He was raised in the Murong Family, a martial lineage with a substantial collection of cultivation manuals. From childhood, he displayed exceptional saber talent, but one art—Twelvefold Spring Rain—was forbidden to him because it was considered inauspicious and difficult to control. 46

Twelvefold Spring Rain also appears to draw Murong's blood-related half-sisters toward him. His father's concealed history of fathering children across the land has therefore left Murong vulnerable to repeated, often distressing encounters with possible sisters. 228

Murong Brothers is theatrical, vain, and intensely attached to the title of “young hero.” He will go to absurd lengths to preserve face—such as pretending to urinate while secretly restoring feeling to his legs after a bad landing. 516 He is equally eager to be recognized by the martial world, and becomes frustrated when crowds recognize “Green Saber Old Devil” but not his chosen name. 374

His bravado conceals real fear and self-doubt. He knows that much of his reputation initially comes from being Duan Yun's companion, and he becomes anxious when forced to face major experts alone. 229 Nevertheless, when Ning Qing is threatened, he refuses wealth, weapons, and women rather than hand her over to his enemies. 230

He is deeply loyal to Duan Yun. Murong helps him despite the “Duan Old Devil” reputation, simply because they are friends, and later trusts Duan Yun's explanation even when he believes Duan may have crossed a line with a possible sister. 92 241 His lechery and fascination with beautiful women remain major weaknesses, however; hallucinations of Jade Guanyin can readily lead him astray. 520
