Background / History
Orochimaru is one of Konoha's Three Sannin and a former fellow disciple of Jiraiya and Tsunade. By the time he encounters Tsunade's team in Earth Country, he has already defected from Konoha and established an underground research base. He first attacks Hyuga Yizhe with a giant snake, then claims he came only to speak with Tsunade. 118
He brings Tsunade, Yizhe, and Shizune to his Earth Country base to seek treatment for Kimimaro, an awakened user of the Kaguya Clan's Dead Bone Pulse. Orochimaru's real interest lies in studying and transplanting Kimimaro's bloodline limit. 120 135
His experiments include implanting snake cells into living subjects. Although most test subjects reject the cells, Orochimaru successfully alters his own body, gaining extreme flexibility and the ability to extend his neck. He cannot explain why his body accepted the foreign cells. 127
Orochimaru's base operates through kidnappings and human experimentation. Investigators later uncover drugged survivors and nearly a hundred corpses beneath the destroyed stronghold, with victims dating back over a year. 172 196
During the Rock Village assault on the base, Orochimaru fights Roshi and Kitsuchi while attempting to preserve Kimimaro and escape. He manipulates Tsunade by claiming that he can restore Dan and Nawaki to life, prompting her to intervene on his behalf. 178 180
Ōnoki's Particle Style severely damages Orochimaru's altered body. He survives by sacrificing part of himself, shedding a decoy skin, and escaping underground, but is left with less than half of his usual strength. 193 197
Afterward, he unsuccessfully tries to obtain Tsunade's Strength of a Hundred Technique from Yizhe. Their conflict ends in a wary research partnership: Yizhe provides cellular and chromosomal theory, while Orochimaru grants access to his laboratory, archives, and research materials. 209 219 220
Orochimaru later develops chromosome extraction and transplantation through ninjutsu-assisted research. His experiments create malformed animal hybrids, convincing him that uncontrolled fusion is insufficient for creating the perfect body he seeks. 231
At a later hideout, Yizhe discovers that Orochimaru has used Living Corpse Reincarnation to occupy the body of a teenager altered to resemble his original appearance. The replacement body suffers from inherent rejection problems. 439
When confronted by Pain's Rinnegan, Orochimaru immediately attempts to seize the legendary eyes. Unable to harm Pain, he agrees to join Pain's organization only to study the Rinnegan and wait for an opportunity to take it. 441 447
Appearance
Orochimaru is a pale, snake-like man with an eerie presence, a distinctive hoarse voice, and golden vertical pupils that unsettle those around him. 120
- Pale complexion and purple eye shadow. 226
- Golden, slit-shaped pupils. 120
- Long tongue and snake-derived physical traits. 188 174
- Can stretch his neck and upper body to unnatural lengths through self-modification. 127 175
- Later conceals a younger reincarnated body beneath skin made to resemble his former appearance. 439
Personality
Orochimaru is intensely curious, analytical, and possessive of his research. He treats powerful techniques, rare bloodlines, tailed beasts, and even people as potential experimental material. His fascination with new phenomena frequently outweighs self-preservation; he remains to test Ōnoki's Particle Style despite Tsunade urging him to retreat. 190 192
He is coldly pragmatic toward both enemies and subordinates. He secretly orders Kimimaro to flee before the Earth Country battle worsens, leaves Tsunade's group behind, and later kills a captured subordinate for failing as a lookout. 198 441
Orochimaru is also manipulative. He exploits Tsunade's grief over Dan and Nawaki to secure her assistance, conceals the incompleteness of his resurrection research, and uses promises of knowledge or power to influence Yizhe. 178 197 232
Despite this cruelty, he recognizes exceptional talent. He comes to treat Yizhe as an intellectual equal in biological research, praises the youth's techniques, and adjusts his own research direction after hearing Yizhe's theories. 212 219 228
Abilities & Skills
Snake Transformation
Orochimaru has modified his body with foreign snake cells, granting him numerous serpentine traits.
- Extends his neck and torso over great distances. 127 175
- Travels underground with snake-like flexibility to evade attacks and ambush opponents. 177 179
- Uses snakes as extensions of his senses and body. 189
- His modified chakra is impure, preventing him from properly balancing Natural Energy for Sage Arts. 228
Regeneration and Survival Techniques
Orochimaru's altered body makes conventional fatal injuries unreliable.
- His severed halves can release countless snakes that reconnect and reassemble his body. 193
- Snake Shedding Technique — sheds an outer body as a substitute, removing external injuries and restoring bodily function. It can be activated so long as he has chakra and is not dependent on normal chakra circulation, limiting the effectiveness of Gentle Fist against him. 214
- Particle Style can permanently erase portions of his body, preventing full regeneration and forcing him to escape at great cost. 193 197
Snake Ninjutsu
Orochimaru employs snakes for offense, restraint, reconnaissance, transport, and escape.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands — launches snakes from his sleeves to bind targets and inject venom. 189
- Myriad Snake Array — disgorges a massive tide of snakes across an area roughly one hundred meters wide. 177 209
- Ninja Art: Dāyan Raka — summons giant snake heads through formation patterns in the ground and air to launch targets into coordinated attacks. 188
- Raging Snake Stomp — summons giant snake heads, including a two-headed giant snake, from beneath an opponent. 190 191
- Evil Snake's Winding — erupts a giant snake beneath a target to launch them upward. 443
- Snake Tongue Swallow — fires a fast, venomous thin snake from his mouth to bite and drain blood from a target. 201
Kusanagi Sword
Orochimaru wields the Kusanagi Sword, an exceptionally sharp longsword carried and retrieved through snakes.
- Slices through Kitsuchi's reinforced stone gauntlet with a smooth, mirror-like cut. 175
- Can be manipulated remotely to return to Orochimaru's hand or strike from unexpected angles. 209
- Can be concealed among his snakes and multiplied with the Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique to create a deceptive rain of sword tips. 209
- Its lethality is limited by Orochimaru's comparatively weaker close-quarters swordsmanship against taijutsu specialists. 201
Elemental Ninjutsu
Like his teacher Hiruzen, Orochimaru has mastered all five basic chakra natures. 445
- Wind Release: Great Breakthrough — exhales a violent gale without needing extended hand seals. 207
- Wind Release: Pressure Damage — fires an abnormally dense gray-black sphere of compressed wind. 445
Rashomon Summoning
Orochimaru can summon enormous demonic gates as defensive barriers.
- Double Rashomon — used to block Yizhe's Spiral Lance Thrust. 211
- Triple Rashomon — summons three nearly thousand-meter-high gates; their combined defense is still pierced by Ōnoki's Particle Style. 192
- His ability to summon additional gates is constrained by his depleted chakra after surviving Particle Style. 212
Forbidden Research
Orochimaru's central goal is a perfect body and immortality.
- Pursues bloodline-limit transplantation, including Kimimaro's Dead Bone Pulse. 135
- Created Cursed Seals from the unstable power derived from Jūgo's imperfect Sage Transformation. 228
- Understands Sage Arts but cannot use them because his foreign-cell modifications cause conflicting Sage Chakras to form. 228
- Develops chromosome extraction and transplantation after Yizhe introduces cellular theory. 231
- Uses Living Corpse Reincarnation to transfer into younger bodies, though the vessels retain rejection issues. 439
- Possesses the scrolls for Impure World Reincarnation and Living Corpse Reincarnation. 228
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — Orochimaru's primary bladed weapon. 175
- Communication snakes — relay messages and warnings to his hideouts. 441
- Research archives — a collection of nearly a thousand secret and forbidden techniques, excluding techniques related to Orochimaru himself. 220
- Laboratories and underground bases — used for biological experiments, imprisonment, and forbidden-technique research. 126 172
Relationships
- Tsunade — Former teammate and fellow disciple. Their relationship is marked by distrust, lingering familiarity, and Orochimaru's exploitation of her grief over Dan and Nawaki. 118 178 180
- Jiraiya — Former fellow disciple and one of the Three Sannin. Orochimaru is willing to risk offending him to pursue immortality research. 118 226
- Hyuga Yizhe — Initially regards Yizhe as an intriguing specimen and a potential source of the Strength of a Hundred Technique; later relies on him for biological knowledge while remaining distrustful and transactional. 136 209 219
- Kimimaro — Loyal subordinate and valuable Dead Bone Pulse specimen. Orochimaru protects him when strategically useful and orders him to retrieve Yizhe years later. 177 438
- Jūgo — Source of the imperfect Sage Transformation power from which Orochimaru derives Cursed Seals; Orochimaru dismisses ordinary Cursed Seal users as inferior failures. 225 228
- Roshi — Four-Tails jinchūriki whom Orochimaru considers a rare research opportunity and attempts to capture. 188
- Ōnoki — A dangerous opponent whose Particle Style nearly annihilates Orochimaru's body and forces his retreat. 193 197
- Pain — Rinnegan wielder whom Orochimaru tries to attack, then deceptively joins in order to study and eventually seize the Rinnegan. 441 447
Story Role / Major Arcs
Earth Country Base Arc
Orochimaru brings Tsunade's team into his Earth Country base under the pretext of treating Kimimaro. His human experimentation and kidnappings provoke an assault by Roshi, Kitsuchi, and Ōnoki. 120 172 173
