Background / History

Tsunade is the granddaughter of Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage. Her reputation as a medical master and one of Konoha's Three Legendary Ninja is known across the Ninja World. 62 33

She encountered Jiraiya peeping into a bathhouse and beat him severely enough that Yizhe later had to bring him to Konoha Hospital. 1 4 Around the same period, she attempted to save Kato Dan, Shizune's uncle; Dan's death later became central to Tsunade's hemophobia. 4 35

After leaving Konoha with Shizune, Tsunade reunited with Yizhe in the Land of Iron when both of his hands were badly injured. She treated his other injuries but initially refused surgery because the sight of blood rendered her unable to operate. 34 Yizhe devised tinted glasses that altered blood's appearance, allowing her to begin overcoming the immediate trigger of her phobia, though she first needed time to adapt to operating with distorted color perception. 42

Orochimaru later betrayed Tsunade and targeted her weakness directly.
