Background / History
Earth-11 and her spinal injury
Brucie is Earth-11’s counterpart to Bruce Wayne, operating as Batwoman in a world where Themyscira dominates global politics and many familiar heroes have different genders. Female Bane broke her spine, leaving her dependent on a wheelchair. Nevertheless, Brucie maintained her underground base and sought an exoskeleton that would let her stand without actually healing the injury 225 436.
Bala introduced her to Miao Mu after he defeated Bane. Brucie welcomed the traveler formally but remained cautious about trusting someone from another world. She subsequently searched Gotham’s records and the Amazon Congress database for information about him, finding no matching records 225 227.
Miao Mu challenged her attempt to resume urgent work in a mechanical exoskeleton, blocking her kick and dismantling the equipment. He offered to treat her spine; afterward, Brucie returned to active operations during Gotham’s escalating crisis 230 234.
Gotham’s crisis and the threat to her fate
During widespread looting and gunfire, Brucie sought Commissioner Gordon’s help but instead found her sidekick poisoned at the deserted police department. She defeated Killer Frost and escaped with Batboy while Poison Moth pursued them 234.
Her search for Harley Quinn brought her to the abandoned Arkham Asylum. There, Halin invoked her parents’ deaths and accused her of causing the suffering around her. Brucie lost control and violently interrogated him, but failed to obtain Harley’s location 237.
Believing Brucie was the point through which Barbatos could influence the world, Miao Mu handcuffed himself to her until dawn. Despite the restraints complicating their movements, they fought Deadshot and the Court of Owls’ Talons together at Wayne Tower. Brucie eventually insisted that they face the danger together rather than break the cuffs 237 239 240.
A citywide bounty then offered Batwoman as the prize for killing Miao Mu. Brucie was located in Crime Alley, the site associated with her childhood trauma, and was later captured by Talons. During the ensuing conflict, she fought a woman wearing a white owl mask whose face was identical to her own 242 243 245.
After Miao Mu survived severe poisoning, Brucie managed his treatment using his flask’s restorative liquor when she could not find a suitable antivenom. She later helped send him away through the Time Grandfather Clock, keeping their photograph in the Batcomputer under top-secret protection 246.
Dead Water catastrophe and escape
Miao Mu returned to Earth-11 three years after leaving. By then, Dead Water had overwhelmed the oceans, destroyed Aquawoman and Atlantis, and gained the ability to transform people into aberrant creatures. Mrs. Alfred had also died in a random package-bomb attack 248.
Gravely wounded and isolated in an emergency shelter, Brucie prepared to merge with Dead Water. She hoped to preserve her consciousness long enough to discover a way to defeat it, accepting that the experiment might kill her. Miao Mu broke into the shelter and destroyed the machine before the transformation could consume her 248.
Her injuries and blood loss required emergency treatment with Dionysium liquor, the Dionysium Gem, plasma, and perfusion equipment. Miao Mu also accepted White Mammon’s help in exchange for a future unconditional favor. Brucie’s heartbeat returned, and he prepared to carry her away under temporary concealment from the Batman Who Laughs 248 249.
Brucie subsequently reached the main world. She explained that remaining on Earth-11 would allow repeated interventions to drag that world into darkness; leaving was a means of escaping the forces targeting her 253 256.
Business, family, and a new Gotham
In the main world, Brucie took Miao Mu’s surname and became involved in his struggling businesses. She hired Harvey Dent as WM Group’s legal counsel, offering an annual salary of $300,000 and assigning patent, business-planning, and legal-aid work 256 265.
She took control of WM Group, became a core Wayne Enterprises shareholder, and rebuilt the family home while preserving its familiar interior arrangement. Her business interests included healthcare, real estate, public welfare, and energy; she declined Lex Luthor’s proposed arms-industry partnership 301 302 394.
Although she later declared herself retired as Batwoman, Brucie continued protecting others. She rescued Barbara Gordon from assassins, subdued Clayface at a fundraiser, and pursued Falcone through public humiliation and attacks on his organization’s reputation, profits, and power 267 271 272 312.
Her role in Gotham’s power structure expanded after the Court of Owls’ defeat. At a dinner for forty-three members of the nouveau riche, she presented dossiers on established families’ publicly traceable businesses and wealth, making participation in her plans an explicit test of friendship 343.
Later operations
Brucie arranged protection and training for Jason, Dick, and Nashton, hiring the main world’s Bane as both tutor and bodyguard while Miao Mu and Batman were away. She also joined the operation against the Kryptonian warships and rescued Superman from the Gene Bank 428 436 450 452.
After Miao Mu was presumed dead, she reached Star City Harbor aboard an ancient Greek trireme while searching for communication equipment. Their reunion led them into an underground Lex Luthor facility, where an activated device transported them to the Marvel world and into Frank Castle’s apartment 487.
Appearance
- Hair and complexion: Jet-black hair and pale skin; her hairstyles include a formal bun and a ponytail 225 351.
- Formal clothing: Black evening gowns, initially paired with black lipstick; later appearances include professional suits, black-rimmed glasses, and red lipstick 225 246 351.
- Build and scars: Described as beautiful and curvaceous, with scars that Miao Mu regards as evidence of her resilience 225 231.
- Batwoman costume: A cowl, jagged cape, combat boots, and Utility Belt. Additional chest and back armor improves protection but restricts mobility 234 238.
Personality
Brucie combines polished manners with Batman-like suspicion. Her first meeting with Miao Mu includes a hand-kiss, a formal bow, and an invitation to dinner, but she still investigates his identity afterward. She is similarly guarded about his business claims, requiring reassurance that his income does not depend on exploiting Arkham’s poor 225 227 256.
Her discipline can fracture when her childhood trauma is deliberately provoked. Halin’s references to orphaned children and her parents’ murder drive her into a brutal interrogation. Later, during the Dead Water catastrophe, she faces a potentially fatal experiment with controlled resolve rather than panic 237 248.
At home, she is affectionate, firm, and practical. She takes Jason’s education, finances, and safety seriously without dismissing his wish to become a hero. Her teasing relationship with Bruce Wayne resembles an older sister’s treatment of a younger brother, while her marriage to Miao Mu combines intimacy, teamwork, and respect for each other’s independence 256 263 427 428.
