Based on the information fed back to him by the system.
The standard regret events were ranked, from low to high, D, C, B, A, and S.
D-rank regret events were the lower limit. There was no question about that.
But S-rank regret events were not the upper limit. When special targets were encountered, even higher SS-rank and SSS-Rank Regret Events could be unlocked.
The rewards for resolving SS-rank and SSS-rank regret events were currently unknown.
Once standard regret events from D-rank to S-rank were resolved, the fixed reward was one Magic Item Fusion Opportunity of the corresponding rank.
For example, resolving a D-rank regret event would guarantee one opportunity to fuse with a D-rank magic item.
If a regret event was resolved particularly well, the system would also award additional Magic Item Fusion Opportunities, though the extra rewards would not exceed the fixed reward.
In the most ideal scenario, if Dudley resolved a D-rank regret event perfectly, he could receive at most two D-rank Magic Item Fusion Opportunities—one fixed reward and one additional reward.
Generally speaking, if a D-rank regret event was completed well but did not reach the system's perfect rating, then in addition to the fixed D-rank Magic Item Fusion Opportunity, the extra reward might be one or two E-rank Magic Item Fusion Opportunities, or even one or two F-rank Magic Item Fusion Opportunities.
Unlike the ranking system for regret events, the lowest rank of magic items was not D-rank, but the even lower F-rank.
Magic items were ranked, from low to high, F, E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, and SSS.
Magic Item Fusion Opportunities of every rank could be exchanged upward or downward, at a rate of one higher rank for three lower ranks.
For example, one E-rank Magic Item Fusion Opportunity could be split into three F-rank opportunities, while three E-rank opportunities could be combined into one D-rank opportunity, and so on.
The Magic Item Fusion Opportunities rewarded by the system allowed Dudley, after obtaining a magic item of the corresponding rank, to directly fuse it with himself and thereby gain that item's traits and abilities.
Dudley could freely activate or seal away the fused traits and abilities. If a fused magic item possessed any undesirable traits or abilities, the system would automatically seal them.
Through physical contact, Dudley could also transfer his own abilities and traits to other living beings. That was where his confidence in turning his parents from Muggles into wizards came from.
Aside from unlocking regret events and awarding the corresponding Magic Item Fusion Opportunities after they were resolved, Dudley's system could also identify magic items and conceal and protect the host's memories.
If powerful wizards such as Dumbledore, Snape, or Voldemort used Legilimency to obtain Dudley's memories and thoughts, memories related to the system and his previous life would certainly go unnoticed.
However, Dudley's other memories, as well as thoughts unrelated to the system or memories of his previous life, could still be discovered through Legilimency.
Additionally, the system would ensure that none of Dudley's memories or thoughts could be stripped away, deleted, or altered.
Besides the advantages mentioned above, Dudley's cheat system also had quite a few pitfalls.
For instance, the system only provided opportunities to fuse with magic items. Dudley still had to figure out how to obtain the actual items himself.
There were no physical rewards whatsoever, not even a system storage space.
Furthermore, the system would only describe the details of a regret event and provide no solution. Dudley had to figure out how to resolve it himself.
Also, the rank assigned by the system to a regret event was not proportional to the difficulty of resolving it.
For example, The Tragedy of the Freak Sister was only B-rank, yet resolving it would inevitably require an almost impossible feat: reviving Aunt Lily!
It was utterly ridiculous!
There were countless similar examples.
Turning his mother, Petunia, from a Muggle into a wizard would earn him, at most, only two D-rank Magic Item Fusion Opportunities.
Yet giving Harry a wonderful childhood could earn him S-rank Magic Item Fusion Opportunities.
The system offered no clear explanation for this.
Dudley guessed that the rank of a regret event might be connected to a character's prominence in the original Harry Potter story and the degree of lingering regret readers and viewers from his previous life felt toward them.
Of course, that was only a guess.
Among the five regret events Dudley had unlocked so far, only Unspoken, Conflicted Care (D-rank) and The Savior's Bleak Childhood (S-rank) had any possibility of being resolved.
To resolve the S-rank regret event, The Savior's Bleak Childhood, Dudley had already been working hard for years.
Drawing on the insights of two lifetimes, he had guided Harry's growth with extraordinary patience, brightening his childhood.
Compared to Harry in the original storyline, the Harry of today was more rational and confident, more forceful and decisive in his actions, and his magical ability was on an entirely different level.
More importantly, his childhood was far happier and filled with far more love than in the original storyline!
Dudley believed that the Ancient Magic of a Mother's Love, cast upon Harry by Aunt Lily at the cost of her own life, had undoubtedly received far more and far stronger charge than it had in the original storyline. Its power had increased dramatically!
It could be said that as long as Harry remained underage, under seventeen, he was practically invincible. No one could take his life.
At that thought, a faint smile appeared at the corner of Dudley's mouth.
In this life, Dudley had lived quite happily from childhood to the present. Over eleven years, almost every day had left him with warm and joyful memories.
He had parents who spoiled him beyond measure, as well as a cousin who admired and cared for him.
To Dudley, the Dursleys and Harry were no longer characters from a fairy tale book. They were living, breathing family.
He would surely protect his family with everything he had, never allowing them to remain muddleheaded and be manipulated by others.
Dudley's gaze gradually turned firm and sharp. He had to grow stronger, step by step, until he became the strongest in this world!
Having lived two lives, he had come to understand life differently. Life was a journey; its breadth mattered more than its length.
His system did not force him to resolve regret events, nor did it force him to become a wizard and study magic.
He could have followed the original storyline of the Dursley Household, accepted Dumbledore's arrangements, and lived out his life steadily as a Muggle.
But he refused to live a mediocre century in vain. He wanted to experience the wonders he had never encountered in his previous life, gain the absolute power needed to protect those he wished to protect, and leave behind the mark of Dudley Dursley in this magical world!
Carried away by surging emotions, Dudley rose and walked to the more open area of his bedroom. He warmed up with a set of boxing and fighting combinations, then practiced the exquisite techniques he had stolen from numerous thieves over the years and refined and improved.
Today was July 7, 1991. He had to make thorough preparations for the operation on July 31!
The success or failure of this operation was critically important!
It concerned his development strategy going forward—whether he would be aggressive or cautious.
Given his personality, he naturally leaned toward aggression. So long as no nearly uncontrollable accident occurred, he had to succeed!
