Background / History
Dumbledore brought infant Harry Potter to the Dursley household roughly ten years before Harry received his Hogwarts letter, leaving an explanation behind. He later kept the household under observation through Mrs. Figg, Dedalus Diggle, other wizards, and personal surveillance. His investigation convinced him that Dudley had originally been a talented but non-magical Muggle. 2 16
When Dudley's name suddenly appeared in the Book of Admittance after he acquired magical ability, Dumbledore ordered Minerva McGonagall to conceal the anomaly and immediately traveled to Diagon Alley. He later intervened in the Gringotts vault battle, disrupting Voldemort's escaping soul and healing the injured survivors. 16 20
Dudley openly challenged Dumbledore over the Philosopher's Stone operation, accusing him of endangering Harry and Hagrid. Dumbledore used Legilimency on Dudley, then accepted responsibility for the consequences of his own plans. Subsequent conversations forced him to confront his self-righteousness, tendency to compromise, and subconscious willingness to shape Harry into a weapon against Voldemort. 24 31 38
After apologizing to Harry and Dudley, Dumbledore formed an Unbreakable Offensive and Defensive Alliance with Dudley and accepted the boy as his junior adviser. The alliance fundamentally changed his methods: he pursued Fudge's removal, cleared Hagrid's name, disclosed Voldemort's return, and took a more active role in reforming both Hogwarts and the wider Wizarding World. 38 39 43
Appearance
Dumbledore is initially portrayed as an elderly wizard with a crooked nose, half-moon spectacles, white hair, and a white beard. He is also associated with an aged, lion-like bearing. 16 24 33
- Aged hands and a measured, elderly manner. 16 33
- Half-moon spectacles and a crooked nose. 16
- Later becomes physically younger following Dudley's intervention. 488 490
Personality
Dumbledore is compassionate, reflective, and deeply concerned with protecting students and allies. He initially favors restraint and compromise even when he possesses the authority to act, a trait Dudley repeatedly criticizes. 29 39
He is willing to examine his own motives when challenged. Rather than dismiss Dudley's accusations, he acknowledges that he had hidden selfish and manipulative thoughts beneath a righteous cause and commits to making amends through action. 38
Following his alliance with Dudley, Dumbledore becomes more decisive without abandoning his conscience. He still favors mercy where possible—such as considering Barty Crouch Sr.'s pain—but accepts that force, political action, and careful manipulation may be necessary to protect the Wizarding World. 39 139 528
