Background

Chen Ji entered Kamar-Taj as an apprentice mage under Baron Karl Mordo. His Talent Entry System allowed him to inspect Talents, plunder Luck Value through combat with significant figures, and use that value to upgrade or recycle Entries. His initial panel included [Clever and Keen], [Martial Arts Master], [Minor Affinity], and the Black Entry [Nightmare Bound] 1.

After upgrading [Clever and Keen] into [Total Recall], Chen gained eidetic memory. He rapidly leveraged memory, martial training, and Mystic Arts study to surpass ordinary apprentices, drawing Mordo's suspicion as a possible rival for Sorcerer Supreme 1.

A later revelation reframes his beginnings: Chen first endured a conscious-world initiation trial, defeated his inner demon Black Winter, returned to reality, became an apprentice at Kamar-Taj, retrieved the Power Stone from Morag, and began his journey through a tavern in the void 566.

Chen is ambitious, calculating, and intensely pragmatic. He views power, knowledge, wealth, and alliances as tools for survival and advancement, readily bargaining with allies, enemies, governments, Hidden Families, and Weird creatures alike. He also avoids commitments that would restrict his autonomy; this is why he initially rejects the permanent title of Sorcerer Supreme despite coveting access to its Codex 90 157 158.

Despite his opportunism, Chen repeatedly acts to protect Kamar-Taj, the Weird World, Mutants, and Earth from existential threats. He worries that possessing the Power Stone could bring the Dark Order to Kamar-Taj, trains allies rather than merely exploiting them, and pursues systems meant to preserve dying universes 19 74 159.

He is an effective diplomat under pressure. Chen defused the confrontation between Kamar-Taj and Asgard, persuaded Odin to host him without abandoning Kamar-Taj, and later negotiated political arrangements in Jotunheim and Sokovia 61 87 181.
