Background / History

Loki was raised in Asgard as Odin's son and Thor's brother, but was secretly Laufey's Frost Giant child. His Entry Panel identified him as highly intelligent, deceptive, morally ambiguous, and a master of illusions; his Frost Bloodline remained dormant during his early life in Asgard 65.

When Chen Ji revealed Loki's parentage, Loki reacted with shock, rage, and an attempted assassination. He subsequently entered Odin's Vault, used the Casket of Ancient Winters to awaken his Frost Giant form, and confronted Frigga about the truth of his birth 66 67.

Feeling ignored beside Thor and humiliated by his lack of status in Asgard, Loki went to Jotunheim. Laufey accepted him as his lost son and heir after Loki declared his hatred for Asgard. Loki's ambitions immediately expanded beyond Jotunheim: he sought to rule Asgard and ultimately the Nine Realms 162.

His deepest motives are tied to identity and recognition. Loki resents Thor's favored position, views his adoption as a possible act of political utility, and repeatedly attempts to prove that he deserves to rule. He is willing to betray Asgard, Jotunheim, allies, and even Laufey to secure power 162 169 176.

Despite this, Loki's original Entry Panel describes him as neither wholly evil nor righteous: survival comes first, but he can assume responsibility at critical moments 65. His later claims of reform are consistently treated with suspicion because of his long record of deceit 279 381 443.

Asgardian Rebellion

Loki covertly provokes conflict between Asgard and Jotunheim, enables the Frost Giants' infiltration of Odin's Vault, and seeks to turn Thor's anger against Laufey. During Odin's sleep and Thor's exile, he manipulates Frigga, takes the Eternal Spear, commands the Destroyer Armor, and frames Chen Ji as a traitor 165 168.

He kills Laufey after bringing the Frost Giants into Asgard, intending to place responsibility on Asgard and inherit Jotunheim while preserving his claim to Asgard's throne 169 170.

Fimbulwinter and the Two-World War

After escaping Asgard, Loki tells the Frost Giant elders that a Midgard sorcerer killed Laufey and claims the crown of Jotunheim. He absorbs Fimbulwinter and leads the Frost Giants against Asgard as the self-proclaimed God of Winter 176.

Thor, Chen Ji, Sylvie, and their allies eventually expose Loki's lie about Laufey's death. Loki is defeated, loses control of the battle, and escapes through a Nine Realms portal 177 179 180.

Shadow Cabinet and the Battle of Sokovia

Loki returns to Midgard with the Mind Scepter and establishes the Shadow Cabinet, recruiting Arthur Harrow, Killmonger, Mephistopheles, and others to oppose Chen Ji and the Illuminati 231.

He attacks Vought Tower with Winter Knights and mind-controlled allies, then joins a larger plot to destroy Chen Ji. Desperate for victory in Sokovia, Loki consumes Ymir's Blood and becomes Ancestral Loki 236 243.

Chen Ji traps the giant Loki inside the Painted Realm, suppresses his power, and kills him. Loki's body is then transformed into the Painted Realm's sky, land, mountains, forests, rivers, sun, and moon 248 249.

Undeath, Revival, and Later Schemes

Loki awakens in Niflheim as an undead being and cooperates with Hela and Nightmare in hopes of escaping and gaining revenge against Chen Ji 274. He later attempts to destabilize the Painted Realm through his residual connection to his own remains, but flees when Chen Ji counters him 283.

Ancient Loki restores him to life and reconnects him to plans involving Thanos and the Ancient Titans 307.
