Jack had spent quite some time recently practicing his gaze in the mirror. Seeing his own 'Evil Gaze' every day had made him extremely sensitive to evil looks.
When a trace of evil flashed through Captain America's eyes—
Jack felt as though he had seen a peerless beauty, only to pull down his pants and discover that the other person's equipment was three times bigger than his!
Jack's breathing grew rapid, drawing Rumlow's attention. He asked, "Jack, what's wrong with you?"
Jack glanced at Rumlow. Clearly somewhat out of control, he lowered his voice and asked in this public setting.
"Rogers is one of us?"
Rumlow smiled and nodded at first, but when he saw the seriousness on Jack's face, he realized Jack was not asking about S.H.I.E.L.D.
Captain America was one of Hydra?
How could that be?!
If you had even a few peanuts in that head of yours, you wouldn't think that!
How many of Hydra's plans had Captain America ruined during World War II? And now you were suddenly asking whether Captain America was one of their own?
Were you acting out Infernal Affairs here?
Since Jack was indeed a comrade Rumlow could trust with his back, Rumlow looked around before leading Jack into one of their own vehicles.
Everyone in the car was Hydra from the strike team, so Rumlow spoke frankly. "What exactly are you thinking? He's the enemy!"
Jack felt that he might have been overly sensitive. Just because of a hint of evil in someone's gaze, he had immediately placed Captain America among Hydra. That really was going too far.
But that still did not explain Captain America's look just now!
"Looks like there's only one way to get to the bottom of this..."
With a headache brewing, Jack knew that only by marrying Jenny and gaining access to higher-level secrets as the boss's son-in-law could he uncover the truth.
So Jack put a hand on Rumlow's shoulder. "Good brother! Do you have any experience being a best man?"
Rumlow: "Meow meow meow?"
An hour later, Jack stood before Pierce and said that over the past hour, he had completely realized just how delicious this soft meal truly was. Rejecting Jenny Pierce's offer to marry down to him had been utterly ungrateful.
Then, with one respectful "Father-in-law," Jack completely sealed the marriage arrangement.
Pierce gave Jack's sudden change of attitude some brief thought, but did not dwell on it. Jack had softened up anyway, and his older unmarried daughter would finally be married off.
It was more or less a win-win situation.
"All right, the wedding will be next month. A lot of my old friends will be coming then, so during this time... practice a little more. Don't embarrass me at the wedding."
"You got it, Father-in-law! Um... my rank in the organization has gone up too, right? I've been wanting to do some work lately. Is there anything..."
Facing this ambitious son-in-law who was single-mindedly trying to climb higher, Pierce felt a headache coming on. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, then righteously refused Jack's request. "Hill only just threw you into Hell's Kitchen, and you already want a promotion? Just focus on preparing for the wedding! Get this done properly first!"
Jack: "All right..."
After leaving Pierce's office, Jack returned to his own. He pushed open the door and found another world-famous scene of 'Marian Making Out.'
This time, Jack did not go inside. Smiling, he told Marian, "I'm getting married next month. To Jenny Pierce. You should come be a bridesmaid."
Upon hearing Jack's words, Marian did not laugh as usual. She looked somewhat stunned, with a readily noticeable hint of sadness in her eyes.
But she quickly hid her disappointment and nodded with a smile. "All right! I'll come be your bridesmaid!"
Jack had intended to leave, but he stopped. Surprised, he walked over to Marian and pushed away the female agent sitting on her lap.
"Someone seems a little disappointed, huh?"
Marian turned her head slightly and shot him a sidelong glance. In an angry voice, she cursed, "Get the hell out!"
The 'obedient' Jack immediately headed for the door, but just as he stepped outside, Marian called him back. Gritting her teeth, she said, "You stubborn ox, for the past six years, you never listened to a single word I said!"
"And now I tell you to get out, and you actually get out!"
Jack turned back with a grin. "Looks like I corrected someone's sexual orientation?"
Smack!
A folder from the desk struck Jack. Marian charged toward him, shoved past him, and ran toward the restroom at the end of the hallway.
"That was such a perfect time to confess, and you still had to tease her with that smug face. You really are cold-hearted..." said the female agent who had been making out with Jenny.
Jack shot her a glance. "Conducting an office romance during work hours—do you believe I'll report this to your supervisor?"
"Uh... I'm leaving! I'm leaving!"
After the female agent slipped away, Jack closed the office door, crouched beside the files scattered across the floor, and slowly began gathering the folders.
Once he had organized the folders, Jack placed them on the desk and looked at that office chair, letting out a long sigh.
His relationship with Marian was neither particularly complicated nor particularly simple.
He and Marian had met six years ago. Back then, Jack was still the original owner of this body, a genuine street punk. Without parents to keep him in line, he was always causing trouble outside and was a regular at the NYPD.
Marian, meanwhile, was a country girl from the Rust Belt who had come to New York to make something of herself. On her very first day in New York, her wallet was stolen, and because of her pretty face, she had nearly been trafficked into Hell's Kitchen.
By chance, Jack ultimately saved the girl, and at the time, he thought raising a beautiful girl sounded pretty great!
So he let Marian stay in his rented apartment.
But later, Jack got himself into serious trouble. With no other choice, he enlisted in the military, intending to hide overseas for a few years.
Yet when he arrived there, he discovered Marian among the new recruits. She had enlisted too and followed him overseas.
It was then that Jack realized there really was someone in this world willing to follow a piece of trash like him.
The rest of the story hardly needed telling. Through the twists of fate, the two met again and from then on faced all kinds of hardships hand in hand.
In the end, thanks to their excellent performance, their enemies being imprisoned, and Jack himself later being replaced by this person, they both ultimately joined S.H.I.E.L.D.
One became a desk agent, while the other became a field agent.
And in the end, after six years of feelings, Jack chose to marry a woman he had known for less than a week—and even asked the former to be the bridesmaid.
What girl could possibly endure that?
