Background / History

Steve Rogers was a World War II super-soldier who fought Hydra and became the face of enlistment posters and government bond campaigns. After his aircraft crashed in Antarctica, he was treated publicly as missing rather than officially dead; his image continued to be elevated for decades as a symbol of American spirit. 21 35

S.H.I.E.L.D. located Rogers in a frozen Hydra plane in Antarctica while searching for the Tesseract. Although the recovery team initially believed him dead, they discovered that he remained alive after decades beneath the ice and transported both him and the Tesseract to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s New York headquarters. 7

After being thawed, Rogers awoke in a staged 1941 setting, immediately recognized that the baseball broadcast was wrong, and escaped into Times Square. The abrupt revelation that seventy years had passed left him shocked and disoriented. 26
