Background / History

Hydra is described as one of the successor organizations to the Shield Brotherhood, an organization founded in 2620 BC to fight the alien parasitic Brood. Internal betrayal eventually split the Brotherhood into S.H.I.E.L.D., the Spear Bureau, and one branch that became Hydra. 38

The original Hydra is identified as the Fundamentalist Faction, whose goal is to bring the Inhuman Hive back to Earth. A later split produced the Nazi faction led by Red Skull. After Red Skull's death, his scientists were absorbed into S.H.I.E.L.D., creating the conditions for Hydra's long-term infiltration. 10 38

Alexander Pierce subsequently gathered the embedded Hydra elements within S.H.I.E.L.D. into his own power base. A further split among Hydra's researchers created A.I.M.; other branches include the Fundamentalists, Red Skull's faction, Pierce's American branch, and various European groups. 38

By the novel's present, Hydra has spent roughly seventy years infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. and the United States. Jack Wilson states that Hydra's protection is a key reason Hell's Kitchen has endured for decades. 29

Hydra members are expected to continue serving S.H.I.E.L.D. during the infiltration period, even when their assignments place them openly against fellow Hydra operatives. 14

Jack reveals Hydra's survival and infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. to Daredevil, then later gives Marian detailed information on Hydra's plans and membership. Marian reports Jack's identity to Fury but believes his allegiance remains unstable. 29 43 44

Threat to Hydra's Rise

After losing a major amount of Evil Points, Jack considers sabotaging the Insight Plan and preventing Hydra's rise from within, believing that keeping Hydra hidden would preserve S.H.I.E.L.D. and secure his own future. 32
