Background / History

After the New Gods overthrew the ancient gods, survivors of the older powers withdrew into other dimensions. Agamotto and other practitioners of spells established Kamar-Taj at Mount Everest—described as the “backbone of the world”—to prevent the New Gods from returning. Agamotto became its first Sorcerer Supreme. 4

In the present era, Kamar-Taj publicly recruits prospective apprentices in Kathmandu. Local residents regard it as a sacred place whose temple-trained holy men can wield miraculous power, including the restoration of injured people. 1

Kamar-Taj’s central duty is defending Earth against extradimensional threats. Its mages maintain the Three Sanctums and the dimensional barrier; breaches, wormholes, and Dark Dimension activity are treated as major security threats. 5 9 32

Following the Ancient One’s clash with Cyttorak and her resulting injuries, she commissions Zhang Yang to safeguard the multiverse in her place. She later offers him the Time Dimension and appoints him as her successor. Zhang formally becomes Sorcerer Supreme roughly one month after entering Kamar-Taj as an apprentice. 27 28 29

Location & Facilities

Kamar-Taj combines temple-like structures with unusual magical architecture. Its grounds include small buildings resembling naturally grown wooden houses, white palace-like structures made from a glowing unknown material, and marble-paved training spaces. 3

Recruitment & Training

Apprentice Assessment

Applicants register in Kathmandu before proceeding toward Kamar-Taj. The assessment includes a written examination and a mental-strength test using a crystal ball. 2

Standard Curriculum

New apprentices are assigned to mentors, with each mentor overseeing roughly fifty students. Zhang Yang was assigned to Mordo’s class. 5
