Background

Dormammu rules the Dark Dimension through a body formed from dark power. When an unidentified force crossed the dimensional barrier, it effortlessly scattered his planet-sized dark true form, leaving him in the human body he had once possessed. He rapidly absorbed dark power and reconstituted his enormous form, alarmed by the force's strength. 1

His power is bound to the Dark Dimension. Although merging with the dimension gave him the power of a Dimensional Demon God, it also confined his true body there permanently. 29

Appearance

Dormammu manifests differently depending on whether he is projecting himself beyond the Dark Dimension.

Story Role / Major Arcs

First Incursion

After Zhang Yang destroys Chino and collapses the sealed Mirror Dimension around the London Sanctum, he touches a black sphere that releases Dormammu's avatar. Dormammu attempts to seize Zhang Yang's power and recruit him into the Dark Dimension, but Zhang Yang resists the mental attack. 11

Zhang Yang identifies the avatar's inability to move, binds it with the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, and destroys its physical form with a magically created Big Ivan. Dormammu curses Zhang Yang as the wormhole is sealed, but the curse is expelled by an unknown presence within Zhang Yang. 12 13

Kaecilius's Defection

Dormammu's contact with Kaecilius contributes to Kaecilius's defection from Kamar-Taj. Kaecilius accepts Dormammu as his master, forms the Zealots, grants Dark Dimension power to Hydra members, and attempts to gather souls and break Earth's dimensional protections. 30 31 36

Kaecilius later summons Dormammu's Dark Legion against Zhang Yang and becomes increasingly dependent on dark energy and Venom's power. 38 42

Dark Crisis

While confronting Kaecilius, Zhang Yang isolates a doorway to the Dark Dimension inside a Mirror Dimension. Dormammu emerges, recognizes Zhang Yang as someone from a distant past, and gives him a flame that he claims Zhang Yang had left with him. 43 44

When Kaecilius arrives to celebrate Dormammu's descent, Dormammu kills him for being “too noisy” and takes his soul. He then departs without attacking Zhang Yang. 44

The returned flame is revealed to be the Dark Fire, a tangible authority over Dark Space. Dormammu has erased his own imprint from it, allowing Zhang Yang to claim 45% authority over the dimension. 45
