Background / History

Lin Yan was reborn on the Douluo Continent after dying violently in his previous life on Earth, retaining his memories. He initially believed a blessed Buddha statue connected to his death had followed him into his new life. Raised in Clearwater Village by his mother, Lin Yueyao, he never met his father and took his mother’s surname. 1

At age six, Lin Yueyao awakened his Black Demon Mace, a Lin Family tool martial soul. Unlike her own mace, Lin Yan’s carried purple lightning, revealing a beneficial mutation. He also discovered a second, humanoid martial soul resembling Tathagata Buddha, though it remained “stuck” and could not be properly summoned. At his mother’s advice, he concealed the second martial soul and focused on the Black Demon Mace. 3

Lin Yan’s Innate Full Soul Power brought him to Nine Treasure City, where he was placed under the care of his maternal grandmother, Lin Yuhuan, after Lin Yueyao departed on undisclosed business. Lin Yuhuan confirmed his Lin Family heritage through the Black Demon Mace and became his principal guardian and cultivation mentor. 4

After gaining his first ring in Thunder Grand Canyon, Lin Yan adopted an extremely rigid routine of meditation, body training, eating, and rest. Medical examination later established that his body becomes stronger while exhausted by digesting external energy; Lin Yan eventually concluded this unusual constitution was connected to his dormant second martial soul. 10 12 21

At eight, he reached level 20 and began training and traveling with Ning Tian and Wu Feng. His physical power allowed him to defeat a three-hundred-year Giant Force Ape alone, then contend with and defeat Tang Tian, a Clear Sky Sect Soul Elder, despite a ten-level soul-power gap. 17 20 21

Lin Yan continued returning to Clearwater Village in search of Lin Yueyao, who remained missing for four years. During this search, he disclosed his second martial soul to Lin Yuhuan; she speculated that its sacred, humanoid qualities might be an Angel Martial Soul mutation inherited from his unknown father. 27 28

After obtaining his third Spirit Ring, Lin Yan entered Shrek Academy at ten years old. His level-32 cultivation, one yellow and two purple Spirit Rings, and combat ability immediately distinguished him among the new students. 30 38 40

His drive stems partly from a desire to uncover the truth behind his mother’s disappearance and his father’s identity. 12 27

He is confident in his own ability, sometimes openly provocative when challenged. He registered under an extravagant arena title and declared himself invincible among Soul Elders before defeating Ji Xingming. However, he accepts guidance from Lin Yuhuan and learned restraint after seriously injuring Zhou Yi during Shrek’s combat test. 34 35 43

Despite his competitive nature, Lin Yan is considerate toward companions. He trains Ning Tian and Wu Feng, shares rewards with Tang Ya, gives Jiang Nannan’s group a Soul Beast’s Spirit Ring, and treats Jiang Nannan to breakfast after their reunion. 25 31 43 45
