Background / History

Yao arrived near Eastsea Academy through a teleportation array and chose to take its entrance qualification test. His arrival reunited him with Yun Ying, an old friend who had not expected to see him in Federation City. He also informed her that several others from their home continent had traveled through the array, including Zhao Huaizhen and Kai. 12

During the entrance tournament, Yao was assigned to fight Yun Ying. He tried to negotiate a quick draw, citing her injuries and concern over her father’s reaction, but she refused. Their duel became an intense exchange between his Star Sword techniques and her spear arts. 13 14

After Tang Wulin defeated Gu Yue, Yao loudly teased the pair and interpreted their restrained match as mutual attraction, provoking Yun Ying’s anger. He later joined Xie Xie and Yun Ying in their ill-conceived attempt to intimidate Gu Yue with Kai, then felt remorseful after Tang Wulin condemned them for ganging up on a classmate. 16 17

When Shadow attacked Xie Xie’s dormitory, Yao responded to Tang Wulin’s warning by locating Wu Changkong and leading him to the scene. He entered first with his Star Sword drawn, helped Gu Yue after she was injured, and remained with the group until Shadow escaped. 27

Yao is a pale young man with casually tousled black hair, a faint scar on the back of his neck, and eyes that curve with his habitual smile. 12

Personality

Yao is relentlessly talkative, cheerful, and socially forward. He readily inserts himself into conversations with people he has only just met, such as Tang Wulin and Xie Xie, and often uses jokes or exaggerated commentary even during tense situations. 14

His confidence is theatrical rather than unshakable. He boasts about being the “Child of the Stars” and threatens Shadow upon arriving at the dormitory, but visibly fears her when she responds. Despite this, he does not abandon the injured students, helps bring Wu Changkong to the crisis, and assists Gu Yue afterward. 27
