Background

The term Apostle initially referred to armed girls using powers distinct from those of Agents. Captured Apostle Sakurai Sachi described Apostles as opposed to Agents, but claimed that even their members were denied key knowledge of their organization’s purpose and leadership; she considered herself a discarded pawn 26.

Apostle activity became widely known after attacks on Beyond-the-Boundary survey teams and other operations. Their attacks were notable for long-range energy bombardment and an apparent ability to avoid provoking Erosion Entities, allowing them to ambush Human Alliance forces outside protected areas 62.

The Apostle Organization had operated in secret far longer than its recent public emergence suggested. Evidence from Majian indicates it had mastered Apostle Beacon production and infiltrated Human Federation cities for at least six years, potentially drawing on the legacy of the Flagbreakers 239 261.

Apostle Beacons and Power

Apostle Beacon

An Apostle Beacon is a ring-like Sacred Relic and a chain-like “modulator” that communicates with and controls Order Force. Unlike standard Agent Beacons, it enables the user to enter Apostle Form and manifest energy in a near-tangible state 68 118.

• Only compatible individuals can properly use an Apostle Beacon; compatibility closely corresponds to compatibility with an Agent Beacon. Agents can therefore awaken Apostle Beacons as well 93.
• The organization’s screening standards are comparatively broad: with enough Sacred Relics, any sufficiently compatible person can become an Apostle 139.
• Apostle Power combines Order Force and Corruption Energy; neither source alone is sufficient 118.
• Prolonged Apostle Form causes irreversible physical damage. Ayse’s estimated remaining safe duration was approximately 150 hours after sustained use 118.

Combat Limitations

Apostle Form grants versatile offense and defense, but it does not make an Apostle invulnerable.

Organization and Operations

The Apostle Organization combines Beacon-compatible operatives with conventionally armed personnel. Its non-Apostle forces use firearms, military training, crystals that lure Erosion Entities, safe houses, underground routes, and intelligence networks embedded within Federation territory 159 181 201.

Its known methods include:

• Infiltrating institutions through coercion, threats against families, and promises of benefits 232.
• Training and screening Eligible individuals, then retaining or discarding them according to adaptability 261.
• Exploiting Erosion Entities as follow-up forces after Angels or armed units weaken a target 159.
• Maintaining temporary bases, safe houses, and underground transport routes beyond the Boundary 200 201.
• Conducting research in concealed facilities possibly connected to Dust, Mutated Entities, and Ruins Technology 205 209.

The organization’s leadership, headquarters, and ultimate objective remain unknown. Even Apostle operatives such as Sakurai Sachi possess only fragmented knowledge and identify unnamed superiors simply as “those people” 26.

Known Apostles

• Sakurai Sachi — The first captured Apostle encountered by Efnir. She admitted involvement in the Erosion Disaster and revealed that Apostles were used in an experiment connected to Yukina’s status as an “Absolute Compatible Candidate” 26.
• Uzuki Saori — Became an Apostle after receiving a Beacon in exchange for cooperation; she sought Apostle Power to save Rin 68 83.
• Fujisaki Ryoka — Captain of a Maesakagawa Apostle Squad. Led an ambush on the relay station and later ordered her remaining forces to withdraw 181 197.
• Hatsukawa Fuka — Ryoka’s former friend and the strongest fighter in her squad. An incomplete Apostle whose behavior changed after use of an Enhancement Agent 181 183.

Major Incidents

Xijing City Emergence

Efnir encountered and defeated Sakurai Sachi after the latter revealed herself as an Apostle. Sachi was subsequently transferred to the Special Disaster Division for interrogation, making her a major source of early intelligence on the organization 24 26 29.

Apostle Power Research

Following Saori’s use of an Apostle Beacon, Xijing City began researching Apostle Power. Ayse voluntarily synchronized with a captured Beacon, confirming that Agents and Apostles share closely related compatibility requirements while exposing the severe cost of prolonged Apostle Form 93 118.

Maesakagawa Relay Station Attack

Fujisaki Ryoka’s squad infiltrated the city and attacked the relay station while Efnir was exhausted from defending it. The squad used stealth technology, Enhancement Agents, energy barriers, and coordinated pursuit tactics against Efnir and Yukina 181 183 184.

The attack ultimately failed after Xijing City reinforcements, Saori, Kite, and Suzuda City’s Funeral Bird squad joined the battle. Most of the attacking Apostles were killed, captured, or scattered; four survivors later escaped into underground routes 196 198 200.

Continued Infiltration Investigation

Subsequent investigations linked escaped Apostles and their organization to hidden research facilities, Dust-contaminated areas, and a wider network inside Federation territory. By the time of the Hamikawa City investigation, Efnir concluded that the organization’s infiltration had been active for at least six years 209 232 261.

Trivia

• The name “Apostle” is both a codename for Beacon users and the common name used for the organization’s combat force 26 159.
• Apostles are often mistaken for a nonhuman threat, but the organization is fundamentally human and exploits that fact to recruit or coerce Federation citizens 232.
