History

The Zenin Clan is an ancient jujutsu family whose lineage extends for more than a thousand years. Its standing rests on inherited techniques, extensive combat resources, and a large number of registered sorcerers; independent curse users regard it as an institution too powerful to defy openly. 12

The clan historically treated the awakening of the Ten Shadows Technique as a succession event. Specialized cursed tools were collected and forged for Ten Shadows users, who were traditionally expected to become clan heads. 20 A previous Ten Shadows bearer who fought a Gojo Clan head four centuries earlier divided the technique’s memoirs into three parts to prevent the clan’s knowledge from being lost in internal conflict. 66

The clan’s past includes severe treatment of members judged weak or unsuitable. It rejected Toji Fushiguro despite the overwhelming physical ability granted by his Heavenly Restriction, and its ancestors accepted the Meifu Clan’s cruel cursed-technique awakening ritual in exchange for sheltering that declining bloodline. Naoya openly expresses this ideology by humiliating Maki Zenin and Kikyō Meifu for their perceived lack of talent and status. Ogi similarly views his daughters’ limited cursed-technique potential as a personal disgrace. 20 65 66

Naobito recognizes that the clan’s arrogance, internal conflict, and tendency to provoke stronger opponents could lead to its destruction. He views Lu Ping—who possesses both the Ten Shadows Technique and strength independent of it—as a possible means of changing the clan’s stagnant structure. 67 68

Lu Ping does not seek immediate upheaval. Instead, he intends to steer the clan gradually away from its feudal customs, beginning with practical changes such as rejecting ritualized displays of submission from Ogi’s wife. 81 82

Succession Conflict

Naobito initially grants Lu Ping access to core clan resources despite his collateral-branch origin, then tests his compatibility with the Piercing Ox Horn Bow. Lu Ping’s successful resonance convinces Naobito to consider him as a future clan head. 18 21

After Lu Ping’s growth in combat ability, Naobito publicly presents him with the Ten Shadows Relic. The gesture is interpreted throughout the clan as an implicit declaration that Lu Ping is being positioned as Naobito’s successor. 68 69

Jinichi and Ogi oppose Lu Ping’s elevation, while Chōjurō offers support only while Naobito’s authority remains secure. Lu Ping’s exceptional promotion to Semi-Grade 1—recommended by Kamo Chitsubaki, Satoru Gojo, Suguru Geto, and Mei Mei—temporarily silences Jinichi’s challenge. 69
