Background / History

A thousand years before the main story, Isshiki arrived in the shinobi world with Kaguya Ōtsutsuki to plant a Divine Tree. As the stronger partner, he was expected to decide which of them would be sacrificed to the Ten-Tails; Kaguya instead ambushed him to avoid becoming the sacrifice. The attack left him catastrophically injured and unable to recover normally 3 11.

Isshiki found the passing monk Jigen and used Sukunahikona to shrink himself before entering his body. After regaining a trace of power, he gradually turned Jigen into a puppet and placed a Kāma on him. Jigen’s ordinary human body was unsuitable for Isshiki’s full resurrection, forcing Isshiki to endure centuries of incomplete survival while seeking a better vessel 3 6.

Qing Si’s awakening Ōtsutsuki aura drew Isshiki out of dormancy. Isshiki considered Qing Si’s weak but pure bloodline ideal: compatible enough for reincarnation, yet too underdeveloped to resist him. He traveled to Qing Si’s village through Jigen, defeated Kaguya clan guards, and attempted to seize the boy 3 6 7.

Jigen was killed during his battle with Genji, forcing Isshiki into a weakened reincarnation. He marked Qing Si with Kāma and attempted to complete his resurrection through him, but Qing Si escaped with a Shadow Clone. Genji then struck Isshiki with the life-sacrificing Ash Bones Technique, leaving him mortally wounded; Isshiki died before he could take Qing Si’s body 8 9.

Appearance

In his reincarnated form, Isshiki had pale skin, grayish-white hair, and a long curved horn extending backward from his head like a crown. His left eye was a white Byakugan, while his mutated right eye bore a golden wheel-like pattern with eight triangles around its pupil 8 11.

Personality

Isshiki viewed ordinary humans as inferior “mortals” and carried the pride of an Ōtsutsuki. He was openly contemptuous of Qing Si and Genji, believing neither could meaningfully resist him. This arrogance repeatedly caused him to underestimate the Dead Bone Pulse and Genji’s willingness to sacrifice himself 7 8 9.

His primary motivation was survival. Even while enraged by Genji, he prioritized placing Kāma on Qing Si over immediate revenge because Qing Si represented his only viable route to a complete resurrection 8. He also retained deep resentment toward Kaguya for her betrayal and feared the destructive potential of her ash-bone techniques 3 9 11.

Operating through Jigen, Isshiki defeats the Kaguya guards and confronts Qing Si. Qing Si’s Dance of the Clematis unexpectedly injures Jigen, while Genji’s Blood-Burning Secret Art forces Isshiki to reveal himself through an incomplete reincarnation 7 8.

Failed Reincarnation and Death

Isshiki captures Qing Si and marks him with Kāma, but Qing Si evades possession through a Shadow Clone. Genji uses the Ash Bones Technique, fatally wounding Isshiki at the cost of his own life 9.
