Purple Extreme Sect
North of the Great Chu Dynasty, by the banks of the Blackwater River, stood Yang Extremity Mountain. On the mountain was the Purple Extreme Sect, one of the "one hall, two palaces, and five sects" of the Great Chu Dynasty.
Today was precisely the annual Outer Disciple Grand Competition of the Purple Extreme Sect, and the entire sect was exceptionally lively. All factions within the territory of the Great Chu Dynasty had sent representatives to watch the battle.
One could see that ten fighting rings were distributed across the wide plaza, and the outer disciples of the Purple Extreme Sect participating in the grand competition were fighting on the rings. The pavilions surrounding the plaza were filled with guests who had come to watch.
"Number thirty-six, Ye Yun, ring number seven!"
Hearing his name, Ye Yun stood up and walked toward ring number seven. Walking up the steps, when he saw the opponent walking up the opposite steps, a trace of a bitter smile appeared at the corners of Ye Yun's mouth.
Iron Mountain, one of the top ten outer disciples known by the nickname "Iron Fist", ranked ninth, and at High-Stage Body Tempering. Rumor had it that he had already unblocked one hundred and two acupoints.
There were myriad human acupoints. At the beginning of a martial artist's cultivation, they needed to unblock one hundred and eight acupoints in the body. Unblocking one to thirty-six was Low Body-Tempering Stage, thirty-seven to seventy-two was Body Tempering Intermediate Stage, and seventy-three to one hundred and eight was High-Stage Body Tempering. When all one hundred and eight acupoints were completely unblocked, drawing the heaven and earth spiritual energy into the body was the Qi Refining Realm.
"Senior Brother Iron Mountain, please enlighten me."
Biting the bullet, Ye Yun walked onto the stage and said to Iron Mountain.
"Kid, you only have the cultivation of the Body Tempering Intermediate Stage. You'd better not waste time and quickly admit defeat."
Iron Mountain looked at Ye Yun with disdain and spoke.
A trace of unwillingness flashed through Ye Yun's heart. Ever since he entered the Purple Extreme Sect last year, through countless days and nights of bitter cultivation and countless times of sweating profusely, he had finally waited for the grand competition and wanted to fight hard to strive for a good result. Who would have known he would run into Iron Mountain.
Ye Yun looked toward the corner of the plaza on the left, at the old man with a full head of white hair and wrinkles all over his face who was looking at him with a worried expression. Hardening his heart, Ye Yun turned his head to look at Iron Mountain and said,
"I still ask Senior Brother Iron Mountain to bestow enlightenment. Your junior brother knows he is inferior to senior brother, but he still wishes to experience senior brother's Iron Fist."
"Since you are courting death yourself, don't blame me for striking too heavily," Iron Mountain said.
Having said that, Ye Yun assumed the opening posture of Fierce Tiger Fist, Tiger Descends the Mountain, and looked at the opposite Iron Mountain with a guarded expression.
In the blink of an eye, Iron Mountain moved, rushing toward Ye Yun with a lunge. He threw a punch straight at Ye Yun's head. Because the speed was too fast, Ye Yun could not dodge in time and could only cross his arms to protect his head, blocking this punch. With a bang, Ye Yun retreated three steps in a row. Before he could steady his footing, Iron Mountain's attack came at Ye Yun again. Ye Yun used the low-tier martial art "Little Shift Body Technique" to evade, dodging Iron Mountain's attacks several times in succession.
A trace of surprise flashed through Iron Mountain's eyes. He had not expected that a disciple who had just entered the sect for a year would actually cultivate a low-tier martial art to the realm of minor accomplishment.
Within the territory of the Great Chu Dynasty, the grades of all martial arts were divided into four tiers: low, middle, high, and supreme. Each martial art was divided into four stages: entry, minor accomplishment, major accomplishment, and perfection. Cultivating martial arts paid attention to comprehension; someone with average comprehension might take several decades and still be unable to cultivate a martial art to perfection, while someone with high comprehension might cultivate it to perfection in a year. Rumored legends spoke of a kind of person born with a Spirit Body who possessed extraordinary talent in cultivation—cultivating for a day was equivalent to an ordinary person cultivating for a hundred days, and a low-tier martial art could be cultivated to perfection in half a month. However, whether this was true or not remained unknown.
"Kid, I didn't expect you to actually cultivate your movement technique to minor accomplishment, but this next punch won't be so easy to take," Iron Mountain looked at Ye Yun and said.
After speaking, Iron Mountain was seen adopting a bow stance, exerting force with his feet, and rushing toward Ye Yun. His speed was more than thirty percent faster than before. Seeing this scene, Ye Yun furrowed his brows and thought in his heart, Oh no, I can't dodge. What should I do?
"Kid, take my punch!" Iron Mountain clenched his right fist, and the fist radiated a jade-colored light as he swung it at Ye Yun. This was Iron Mountain's famous martial art, Jade-Shattering Fist, and Iron Mountain had already cultivated the Jade-Shattering Fist to major accomplishment.
In the blink of an eye, Iron Mountain's fist struck Ye Yun's chest. Ye Yun only felt a pain in his chest, and his entire body was sent flying backward, crashing heavily onto the ring. The back of his head made a sharp impact with the small stones on the ring with a bang.
Plunging into darkness, Ye Yun's brain nearly fainted, and he could see nothing at all.
The opposing Iron Mountain sneered at Ye Yun, who had collapsed and could not get up, turned his head to look at the elder acting as the referee, and said, "Elder, hurry and announce the result."
The elder glanced at Ye Yun expressionlessly and said, "Ring number seven, Iron Mountain wins."
Hearing the result, Iron Mountain walked off the ring without looking back. Regaining his senses, Ye Yun slowly stood up and walked down the ring swaying unsteadily.
Enduring the pain, Ye Yun arrived before the old man in the corner of the plaza, lowered his head, and softly said, "Grandpa, I'm sorry for letting you down."
Hearing this, the old man looked at his grandson before him with heartache and said, "Child, you haven't let Grandpa down. Back when Grandpa was your age, Grandpa wasn't even as good as you. Since you lost this time, you lost; just win it back next time. How can one experience setbacks if one wants to become an expert? Am I right?" Hearing Grandpa's words, Ye Yun raised his head, his eyes filled with tenacity as he said, "Grandpa, I understand. Next year I will definitely enter the top ten!"
The old man was named Ye Feng, and he was Ye Yun's grandfather. In his youth, he was also a disciple of the Purple Extreme Sect, but due to poor talent, he still failed to break through to the Qi Refining Realm after cultivating for ten years. Yet he was unwilling to give up just like that, later remaining in the Purple Extreme Sect to work as a deacon, working and cultivating concurrently within the sect. This stint lasted twenty full years.
Once a person passed forty years old without breaking through to the Qi Refining Realm, the functions of the human body would decline, and their physical vitality would slip.
Left with no choice, Ye Yun's grandfather also put aside thoughts of continuing his cultivation, withdrew from the sect, and settled down in a small village by the Blackwater River at the foot of the sect's mountain.
At the age of fifty, on his way into the mountains to hunt, Ye Yun's grandfather found an infant abandoned by the roadside. Unable to bear it in his heart, he brought the infant back home to raise and gave the infant the name Ye Yun.
Ever since he was little, Ye Yun listened to his grandfather tell stories of experts, and in his heart he also yearned to become a martial artist capable of lifting mountains and possessing a spirit that could swallow rivers. A year ago, fifteen-year-old Ye Yun also successfully passed the examination of the Purple Extreme Sect, becoming an outer disciple. After a year of bitter cultivation, he had recently unblocked thirty-seven acupoints, successfully breaking through to the Body Tempering Intermediate Stage, and had also cultivated both low-tier martial arts he received from the sect to minor accomplishment. He had thought that this grand competition would allow him to display his skills, and he even brought Grandpa over from the village at the foot of the mountain to watch, hoping to make Grandpa happy. Unfortunately, his luck was bad; the moment he arrived, he ran into Iron Mountain, and he was eliminated in the first round.
As time flowed on, the first round of matches finally concluded. Five hundred disciples who stood out from the over one thousand participating disciples would compete in tomorrow's second-round elimination matches. The grand competition lasted for three days in total: the first two days were elimination matches, and the third day held the challenge matches. Fifty disciples would be decided through two rounds of elimination matches. On the third day of challenge matches, ten ring defenders would be chosen from the fifty disciples across the ten rings to accept the challenges of the remaining forty disciples. As long as one successfully defended the ring five times, they could become part of the top ten, and then the victorious ring defenders would further compete for rankings. The top three would all be exceptionally promoted to inner disciples and receive a handsome reward.
However, all of this had nothing to do with Ye Yun anymore.
