Background
The sect stands atop Yang Extremity Mountain and has accumulated martial arts manuals over more than three hundred years of existence. Its Cultivation Manual Pavilion alone holds more than six hundred low-grade martial arts manuals. 3
Although Blackwater Commandery is nominally territory of the Great Chu Dynasty, it is effectively under the Purple Extreme Sect’s jurisdiction. Its influence also gives its disciples considerable standing while traveling through Blackwater Commandery and elsewhere in the dynasty. 43 44
The sect maintains an elite inner sect: it has over ten thousand outer disciples but only a little over five hundred inner disciples. Advancement is deliberately difficult; at least half of candidates are eliminated from the inner disciple assessment each year. 17
Organization
Residences and Peaks
| Area | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Purple Extreme Peak | Residence of the sect master and elders 2 |
| Sunrise Peak | Outer-disciple residence; two outer disciples share each courtyard 2 |
| Great Sun Peak | Inner-disciple residence; each disciple receives an independent dwelling or cave residence 2 17 |
Elders
The sect has nine great elders. Any individual holding the title of elder is at minimum a True Essence Realm expert. 17
- Seventh Elder — oversees outer sect affairs and witnesses Life-and-Death Platform duels. 14
- Fifth Elder — oversees Hundred Strong Ranking challenges. 37
Notable Members
- Xiang Wentian — chief inner disciple, holder of the first place on the Hundred Strong Ranking for five years, and one of the Great Chu Dynasty’s Eight Great Geniuses. 17 29
- Ye Yun — outer disciple who later becomes an inner disciple and enters the Hundred Strong Ranking at 95th place. 17 38
- Ye Feng — former disciple who remained as a sect steward for twenty years after failing to reach the Qi Refining Realm; later left the sect and raised Ye Yun. 1
- Luo Long — twelfth-ranked expert on the Hundred Strong Ranking and eldest young master of the Luo Family. 44
Disciples and Advancement
Outer Sect
Outer disciples reside on Sunrise Peak. Upon joining, each may receive two low-grade martial arts manuals; each subsequent realm advancement grants access to one additional manual. Private teaching of sect martial arts is prohibited unless the martial art was obtained outside the sect. 2 3
To become an inner disciple, an outer disciple must:
- Reach the Qi Refining Realm.
- Pass the sect’s inner disciple assessment. 15
Inner Sect
Inner disciples receive dark azure robes marked with a purple great sun at the collar—the sect’s symbol—and a dark-purple identity token bearing their name and the same emblem. These tokens serve as proof of identity when traveling. 17
Inner disciples live on Great Sun Peak and are required to undertake missions. Newly promoted disciples receive a three-month grace period; afterward, they must accept and complete a Mission Hall assignment every two months. 17 23
Facilities and Institutions
Cultivation Manual Pavilion
The three-story Cultivation Manual Pavilion is located at the foot of Purple Extreme Peak. Its floors are organized by martial-art grade:
| Floor | Contents | Access |
|---|---|---|
| First floor | Low-grade martial arts | Outer disciples 3 |
| Second floor | Mid-grade martial arts, divided into cultivation techniques, martial skills, movement techniques, and secret arts | Inner disciples 19 |
| Third floor | High-grade martial arts | Not specified 3 |
The sect tightly regulates manual selection. A disciple may only take the manuals they are authorized to receive, and the Pavilion records their choices. 3 20
Mission Hall
The Mission Hall assigns compulsory assignments to inner disciples. Missions are classified according to the expected cultivation level:
| Mission Level | Intended Cultivation Range |
|---|---|
| Level One | Qi Refining Realm, First–Fourth Heaven |
| Level Two | Qi Refining Realm, Fifth–Seventh Level |
| Level Three | Above the Seventh Level of the Qi Refining Realm |
Hundred Strong Ranking
The Hundred Strong Ranking lists the sect’s strongest one hundred inner disciples. It was established by the elders to motivate cultivation; positions are determined through combat, and higher ranks receive greater rewards. 17
A disciple may challenge a ranked member to claim their position. After Ye Yun defeated Zhou Yuan, he took 95th place, while Zhou Yuan fell to 96th. Ranked disciples can collect Spirit Stones in three-month distributions. 38 39
Life-and-Death Platform
The Life-and-Death Platform allows disciples with irreconcilable feuds to apply for a sanctioned duel to the death, despite the sect’s general prohibition on disciples killing one another. A challenged disciple may refuse if their opponent exceeds them by an entire major realm. 14
Iron Mountain used the platform to challenge Ye Yun after reaching the Qi Refining Realm; the Seventh Elder served as witness, and Ye Yun killed Iron Mountain during the duel. 14 15
Annual Outer Disciple Tournament
The annual outer sect disciple tournament draws representatives from forces across the Great Chu Dynasty. More than one thousand outer disciples compete across ten arenas. 1
| Stage | Format |
|---|---|
| First two days | Elimination rounds reduce the field to fifty disciples. |
| Third day | Ten arena masters are selected; each must defend their arena five times against the other forty finalists to enter the top ten. |
| Final ranking | The victorious arena masters fight to determine their rankings. |
| Promotion | The top three are exceptionally promoted to inner disciples and receive rewards. |
Story Role / Major Events
- The sect hosts the outer disciple tournament in which Ye Yun is eliminated by Iron Mountain, setting in motion Ye Yun’s subsequent growth. 1
- Ye Yun enters the sect as an outer disciple at age fifteen, then later passes the inner disciple assessment alongside He Yue and Ling Chen. 1 17
- The sect’s chief disciple Xiang Wentian intervenes when Emerald Palace’s Zhuang Yan attempts to kill Ye Yun, defending both Ye Yun and the sect’s honor. 29
- Purple Extreme Sect participates in the auction bidding for the Quasi-Ultimate Gale Falling Leaves Saber Technique, though Emerald Palace ultimately acquires it. 33
- Its authority and reputation allow Ye Yun to obtain respect and assistance from the Luo Clan Chamber of Commerce while traveling through Blackwater Commandery. 44
Trivia
- The purple great sun is the sect’s identifying emblem, appearing on both inner-disciple robes and identity tokens. 17
- The sect possesses few Quasi-Ultimate Martial Arts; access to such techniques is reserved for disciples who make tremendous contributions. 33
- The Frost-Ice Soul and Earthheart Flame beneath Great Sun Peak’s Cold Spring are recorded in the sect’s ancient texts, though they are far beyond the reach of ordinary disciples. 22
