Nature and Awakening

Every person possesses a Martial Soul, but only a small minority awaken one that can be cultivated. Those with cultivable Martial Souls and Innate Soul Power may become Spirit Masters, a prestigious profession whose power can transform both an individual's and a family's social standing 8.

• Children undergo Martial Soul Awakening Ceremonies at age six 478.
• A trace of Innate Soul Power is required to qualify for Spirit Master cultivation; those with none cannot become Spirit Masters 478 890.
• Martial Souls are closely bound to their users' souls. Awakening one grants access to Soul Power, Soul Rings, and soul skills 459.
• Most Martial Souls are inherited through bloodlines or reflect the wielder's surroundings and daily life; farmers' children commonly awaken farm tools such as hoes or sickles 23 459.
• Powerful parents generally produce stronger Martial Souls, though mutation remains possible 23.

Classification

Martial Souls are broadly divided into Weapon Martial Souls and Beast Martial Souls 13 24.

Weapon Martial Souls are not inherently combat-oriented: some specialize in support or control. Conversely, a Battle Spirit Master uses a Martial Soul primarily for direct combat 24.

Soul Power and Cultivation

Spirit Masters cultivate by absorbing ambient Soul Power. This method is stable but slow, and insufficiently refined Soul Power can accumulate impurities that hinder later advancement 13 485.

Each title is divided into ten levels 8. Reaching level ten requires a Soul Ring before a Soul Scholar can advance to Spirit Master 13.

Soul Rings

Soul Rings are normally produced when Soul Beasts are killed. They grant soul skills and determine much of a Spirit Master's combat development 13.

Absorbing a ring beyond one's physical endurance can cause fatal bodily collapse. Matching a Soul Beast's attributes to the user's Martial Soul is also important for obtaining an effective soul skill 13.

• Soul Ring skills are not the only source of combat techniques; rare self-created skills and inherited skill legacies also exist 24.
• At level seventy, Spirit Masters can awaken a Martial Soul Avatar, a major power threshold that dramatically strengthens the Martial Soul's abilities 600.
• Yang Ming's system provides an exceptional alternative: compatible lottery rewards may be converted into Soul Rings without hunting a Soul Beast 13.

Mutations

A Martial Soul mutation may become either exceptionally powerful or exceptionally weak, though harmful mutations are more common 23 108.

Gate of Babylon

Yang Ming's Mysterious Sword mutated into the Gate of Babylon after a system draw. Rather than merely changing shape, the Gate devoured the Mysterious Sword and retained it as its first treasure 108.

Moon Blade Mutation

After Illidan transformed Xie Yue into a Shadow Demon, Xie Yue's paired Moon Blade Weapon Martial Soul mutated into warglaive-like blades resembling the Warglaives of Azzinoth 663.

• Damage Severing — ignores 50% of a defense-type Spirit Master's defenses.
• Unending Bleeding — reduces healing effects by 90% and causes severe bleeding.
• Frenzied Critical Strike — doubles attack speed and guarantees critical hits when both blades are wielded. 663

Self-Manifested Martial Soul

Gui Mei is cited as an extraordinary mutation case: after dying during a mission, he survived and mutated into a Martial Soul himself 108.

Suppression and Theft

Martial Souls can be countered by rare suppression abilities.

• A Soul Ring Martial Soul can bind a target and suppress their Martial Soul, Soul Power, Soul Rings, and soul skills 415.
• Caesar's Soul Ring Martial Soul can go further, sealing and stealing a trapped opponent's Martial Soul and soul skills for his own use 443.
• Losing a Martial Soul is portrayed as devastating: without it, a Spirit Master loses the foundation of their cultivation and combat power 459.

Martial Soul Fusion Skills

Martial Soul Fusion Skills are exceptionally rare cooperative abilities whose power exceeds the simple sum of the participating Spirit Masters 983.

Even identical Martial Souls do not guarantee a fusion skill 983. The Temple Knight Order instead developed a battle formation that gathers many knights' power into one member because true fusion is so difficult to achieve 352.
