Structure and Operation

Greater and Lesser Holy Grails

The Fuyuki system was created by the Einzbern family to reproduce the Third Magic. Justeaze Lizrich von Einzbern sacrificed herself to become the foundation of the Greater Holy Grail. 53

• The Greater Holy Grail is the central system connected to the Root.
• A Lesser Holy Grail serves as its external vessel or “heart.”
• Irisviel von Einzbern filled this role in the Fourth Holy Grail War, while Illyasviel von Einzbern was created to serve as the Fifth War’s vessel. 44 53

Servant Souls and the Path to the Root

The Grail War exists to gather sufficient Servant souls and the magical energy used to sustain their bodies.

• Under normal conditions, six of seven Servants must be removed before the Grail can stabilize a passage to the Root. 62
• The Grail treats Servants primarily as required “quantity,” rather than as individuals, and may forcibly remove them if normal fighting does not produce enough casualties. 62 63

• A wish may be fulfilled through the simplest available method. The corrupted Grail interprets Kiritsugu Emiya’s wish for world peace as the extermination of humanity. 68

Autonomy

The Holy Grail possesses an apparent will and can act to preserve its ritual.

Corruption

During the Third Holy Grail War, the Einzberns attempted to exploit the system by summoning Angra Mainyu as an Avenger-class Servant. 68

The summoned being was not the true Zoroastrian god, but an ordinary human burdened with the name and concept of “All the World’s Evils.” Its exceptional compatibility with the Grail allowed that concept to contaminate the system and transform it into the Black Holy Grail. 67 68

• Angra Mainyu exists within the corrupted Grail as a consciousness capable of conversing with visitors. 67 68
• It adopts Irisviel’s appearance after absorbing her memories and personality. 67 69

Fuyuki Greater Holy Grail

Morpheus summons the Greater Holy Grail by opening and reinforcing a passage with Gilles de Rais’s soul. It manifests as a hollow releasing black liquid and masses of grotesque flesh. 69

• Angra Mainyu appears from within the manifestation in Irisviel’s form. 69
• Morpheus uses the Grail to obtain answers to advanced magical questions rather than make a conventional wish. 69 70

Several Holy Grails appear independently throughout the Singularities.

• In Oceanus, Francis Drake possesses the era’s native Grail, which chose her to resist a foreign Grail introduced to distort history. The opposing Grails keep the era both stable and trapped in chaos. 100 101
• Blackbeard and Hector are inferred to have operated as separate faction cores supported by different Grails. 104
