Background / History

Zhu Yan was a Bone-Chiming Realm pig demon who called himself the Black-clad Sword Immortal. A demon using that title had massacred six villages in Lanzhou, prompting the Demon Suppression Office to investigate 8.

Zhu Yan was born a weak but gluttonous wild boar on Fuling Mountain. A lightning strike gave him spiritual intelligence, and he later learned to assume human form. His unusual bloodline produced scarlet tentacles and helped him cultivate more rapidly than his peers 67.

He entered Su Manor to learn swordsmanship and formed a relationship with Su Wan, the manor master’s daughter. She accepted him even after discovering his demon form, but the manor’s people drove him away. After Su Wan gave birth to their two Pig Demon children, she was burned alive. Zhu Yan later found the children in an old hunter’s care, killed the hunter, and took them away. His loss deepened his hatred of humanity, although he remained devoted to swordsmanship 67.

Zhu Yan refused an invitation to join the Western Regions Demon Court because he did not want to leave his homeland. After centuries of stagnation in the Bone-Chiming Realm, he began considering a journey west to seek a path to Core Formation 67.

He was the father of two String-Hearing Realm Pig Demons. While taking them out to “gain experience,” Zhu Yan slaughtered people himself and left his sons seeking living victims along the official road. Jiang Yuechu killed both sons after they threatened fleeing commoners 11.

Zhu Yan later arrived in Jincheng County searching for traces of his sons. He encountered Xu Nian and the Demon Suppression Office while carrying an abducted, mutilated woman on a wooden stake. Realizing that his sons had likely been killed by the Office, he attacked without restraint 13.

Before his death, Zhu Yan had attempted to imitate human refinement by learning swordsmanship and reciting poetry. He later admitted that this pursuit had made him forget the brutal instincts of his race: tearing flesh with claws and tusks 14.

After Jiang Yuechu killed and recorded him, Zhu Yan remained within the Hundred Demons Register. His recorded incarnation was subsequently strengthened through repeated investment of Dao Cultivation, allowing him to develop techniques, be summoned, and participate in Jiang Yuechu’s manifested demon force and martial deductions 77 125 156 203 337.

A Pig Demon venerable serving the Buddhist Son appears much later, but the account does not identify him as Zhu Yan 1020 1021 1022.

Appearance

Zhu Yan possessed a pig’s head atop a massive humanoid body. He could further enlarge himself by making the fat across his body writhe and swell, bursting through his tattered clothing 13 14.

Personality

Zhu Yan was cruel, bloodthirsty, and contemptuous of humans, treating them as prey. He derided the Demon Suppression Office as “lackeys” and killed captured guards by biting off their heads 14.

Despite his brutality, his rage toward Jiang Yuechu came from genuine paternal attachment. Upon recognizing the blade technique that killed his sons, he abandoned all restraint and pursued vengeance against her 15. His recorded memories also reveal his affection for Su Wan and the grief that contributed to his hatred of humanity 67.

His later recorded manifestation could be put to work by Jiang Yuechu in Heavenly Demon Martial Training. Although Jiang Yuechu initially doubted whether a pig demon could comprehend an orthodox human cultivation scripture, Zhu Yan showed unexpected compatibility with the Myriad Ravines Return to Origin Scripture 156.

Bone-Chiming Realm Physique

As a Bone-Chiming Great Demon, Zhu Yan possessed immense physical strength, resilience, and blood vitality.

• His neck muscles and tendons clamped down hard enough to trap Jiang Yuechu’s saber after it cut deeply into his neck 15.

Zhu Yan could release a foul, blood-red mist from his body and shape it into numerous tentacle-like appendages. This was identified as a rare innate supernatural ability among Bone-Chiming Realm demons 14.

Zhu Yan’s bloodline divine ability allowed the user to drive flesh and blood onto weapons, substantially increasing their sharpness and toughness 67.

• The ability later evolved into Flesh Demon Armament when Zhu Yan reached Heaven-Natured 77.

Zhu Yan had attempted to emulate human customs, including learning swordsmanship and poetry. He wielded a rusty longsword against Xu Nian, though the weapon broke during their first exchange 14.

He had originally entered Su Manor to study the sword and remained obsessed with swordsmanship even after being driven away 67.

Jincheng County Incident

Zhu Yan entered Jincheng County while searching for his missing sons and encountered Xu Nian’s Demon Suppression Office squad. After identifying them as likely responsible, he unleashed his blood-mist divine ability and overwhelmed the guards 13 14.

Battle Against Jiang Yuechu

Jiang Yuechu revealed that she had killed Zhu Yan’s sons, provoking him into a furious attack. Her strongest saber strike wounded his neck but could not sever it, as his flesh trapped her blade 15.

Jiang Yuechu then activated Tiger Mountain God Demonization. With only moments of vitality remaining, she crossed the distance at extreme speed and punched through Zhu Yan’s chest, killing him 16.

Posthumous Recording

Jiang Yuechu received 350 years of Dao Cultivation for killing Zhu Yan and spent 230 years to record him as Zhu Yan (Shadow Tracing) in the Hundred Demons Register. The recording granted her the perfected Blood Sustenance Art 18.

When she later advanced his recording to Vermilion Staining, she experienced memories of his life on Fuling Mountain, his relationship with Su Wan, and the deaths and separation that shaped his hatred of humanity 67.

Baosha Temple Assault

A later incarnation of Zhu Yan appeared with a tiger demon, wolf demon, and Black Mountain Bear Lord during the assault on Baosha Temple’s Arhat Hall. He used his blood-mist divine ability to break the monks’ formation and massacre its members 125 126.

The four demons were ultimately killed by Baosha Temple’s Core Formation Realm chiefs, after which their bodies disintegrated into dust rather than leaving ordinary corpses 126.

Heavenly Demon Martial Training

After Jiang Yuechu entered the Ink-Point Realm, she assigned Zhu Yan to Heavenly Demon Martial Training. The pig demon was tasked with studying Blood Sustenance Art and the Myriad Ravines Return to Origin Scripture, eventually deriving Ten Thousand Demons Devour Heaven 156 203.

He later joined other Heaven-Natured recorded demons in a collective discussion of the Flawless Unbroken Art. The discussion became disorderly, and Zhu Yan fell silent after White Ape Lord struck Tiger Mountain God 337.

Great Wilderness Four Fiends

Zhu Yan’s foul-earth physical talent was incorporated with the Tiger Mountain God, Azure-Faced Lord, and Black Mountain Bear Lord into the Great Wilderness Four Fiends Mountain-Suppressing Diagram. The four formed the foundation of Jiang Yuechu’s Yang Mountain and the Four Fiends Ascension: Desolate God Body 290.

Myriad Demon Records Manifestation

The Myriad Demon Records can preserve older recorded demons and allow them to seize the foundations of newly imprinted demons. Tiger Mountain God and Cosmic Demon King demonstrated this process, but Zhu Yan is not shown undergoing the same transformation 848.

The four Painting-Realm demons who pursued Chu Duanliu were White Horse Venerable, Cosmic Demon King, White Ape Lord, and Tiger Mountain God. Zhu Yan was not identified among them 896.
