Thanos followed a cosmic “balance” doctrine, slaughtering half the population of worlds he encountered while sparing the remainder. The policy made him and his adopted daughter Gamora hated by survivors across the galaxy. 78

He considered Apocalypse an obstacle to his mission after reviewing recordings of Apocalypse’s growing power on Xandar. Rather than launch a direct attack, Thanos began preparing an alternative plan. 98 When Nebula’s surveillance feed later showed Apocalypse manipulating matter and celestial bodies while holding three Infinity Stones, Thanos concluded that forcefully gathering the Stones was no longer viable. 221

Apocalypse, Captain Marvel, Hela, and Thor eventually separated Thanos from the Heart of the Universe. 318 Though weakened, Thanos summoned multiversal powerhouses to create chaos around the Heart and seek another chance at transcendence. 319 320 321
