Background & History

Banishment to Earth

Thor was preparing to inherit Asgard’s throne when Frost Giants infiltrated the weapons vault. Rejecting Odin’s restraint, he led Loki, Sif, Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg into Jotunheim, where their actions nearly ignited war between Asgard and the Frost Giants. Odin intervened to save them, then declared Thor unworthy of kingship, stripped his divine power, and exiled him to Earth. 28

In a New Mexico desert town, Thor was struck by Jane Foster’s vehicle and taken to a hospital. After escaping in a hospital gown while searching for his hammer, he met Tang Tianqi. The two became drinking companions, with Thor calling Tang his friend after their extended drinking contest. 28 29

Earthly Trial

Thor and Tang later fought in a friendly but intense spar. Thor relied on more than fifteen centuries of combat experience and his bloodline rather than formal cultivation techniques, while Tang used overwhelming physical power and afterimages to give him two black eyes. 31 33

After Tang confirmed that he knew Thor’s true identity and had spoken with Odin, Thor began treating him as an equal rather than an ordinary mortal. He gave Tang 20% trust, beginning their Luck Sharing connection. 32

Thor failed to lift his hammer at the S.H.I.E.L.D. site, believing himself still unworthy. Loki then deceived him into thinking Odin had died and that he was forbidden from returning to Asgard, leaving Thor grief-stricken and remorseful over the consequences of his actions. 34

Return of the God of Thunder

Sif, Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg arrived on Earth to seek Thor’s help against Loki. Thor initially refused to return without his divine power, believing he was unqualified to challenge Loki or reclaim Asgard. 36

When two Destroyers attacked the town, Thor offered himself in exchange for the civilians’ safety. His selfless resolve awakened his lightning power; Thor then summoned Thor’s Hammer and returned to full strength as the God of Thunder. 39 40

Thor could not immediately defeat the Fusion Destroyer alone, but he and Tang fought together to destroy both machines. Tang’s ability to wield Thor’s Hammer shocked Thor and the Asgardian warriors, though Tang returned it without attempting to claim it. 40 41

Asgardian Conflict

Thor returned to Asgard with Tang and the Warriors Three, discovering that Loki had manipulated events surrounding Laufey and the Frost Giants. Thor attempted to stop Loki from using the Rainbow Bridge’s amplified energy to destroy Jotunheim. 41 44

Thor destroyed the Rainbow Bridge to end the attack, while Tang had attempted to redirect its energy. The resulting explosion threw Thor, Loki, and Tang toward the Cosmic Sea; Odin rescued Thor and Tang, but Loki was left to fall into the void. 44 45

When Loki later appeared on Earth, Odin prepared to use Dark Energy to send Thor and Tang back to protect Jane Foster and Tang’s wife, Natasha. 50

Avengers and the Battle of New York

Thor and Tang arrived above the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier through Odin’s Dark Energy, strengthening Earth’s defenses against Loki’s invasion. Thor was surprised by Tang’s popularity among Earth’s heroes and envious of his friend’s ability to fly without relying on a weapon. 56

During Loki’s sabotage of the Helicarrier, Thor helped Iron Man and Captain America repair the damaged engines while Black Widow subdued Hawkeye. Thor continued to defend Loki from execution despite the latter’s crimes, emphasizing that Loki remained his brother. 57

After Loki opened a wormhole over New York, Thor used Mjolnir and wide-area lightning attacks to hold the line against the Chitauri forces. He accepted responsibility for helping protect Earth from the catastrophe caused by his brother. 58

The Dark Elf War

When Jane became host to the Aether, Thor sought Tang’s help in saving her. After Tang’s attempt to extract the Reality Stone with the Tesseract nearly killed Jane, Thor decided to bring her to Asgard, where its knowledge and defenses offered their best chance of protecting her. 69

Thor defended Asgard against the Dark Elf invasion, destroying numerous attacking warships with Mjolnir. However, the enemy’s numbers prevented him from stopping every vessel from reaching Jane and the royal palace. 71

Tang’s intervention prevented Frigga’s fated death and destroyed the Dark Elf mothership. Thor subsequently accepted that the original future had changed, trusted Tang’s strength, and joined him in pursuing Malekith to obtain the means of removing the Aether from Jane. 72 73

Thor was unable to participate directly in Tang’s final struggle against Malekith’s Aether tornado because he prioritized Jane’s safety. After the crisis, he returned to New York, reconciled with Tang through their usual insults and drinking plans, and saw Jane sincerely thank his friend. 75 76

Reign and Abdication

With Loki missing and excluded from succession, Thor was crowned King of Asgard. Although he accepted the throne out of duty to Odin and Asgard, he quickly found the responsibilities of rule miserable and repeatedly looked for ways to escape them. 77 287

Following Odin’s death and Hela’s release, Thor attempted to establish a relationship with his older sister through combat. Hela overwhelmingly defeated him, casually deflecting his lightning and nearly destroying Mjolnir, exposing the vast difference between their strength. 281 282

Thor eventually abdicated in Valkyrie’s favor. He formally handed her the royal scepter and appeared relieved to surrender the burdens of kingship, while continuing to serve Asgard as a warrior and member of its royal family. 292

Thor’s Disappearance and Thanos’s War

After Mjolnir was damaged, Thor traveled to Nidavellir for repairs and disappeared when Thanos’s forces and the Stellar Array crisis engulfed the realm. Tang could confirm through their causal connection that Thor remained alive, but could not initially trace his location. 293 301

Tang ultimately rescued Thor and Loki from Ebony Maw’s hostage trap. Thor endured being cut into pieces because Tang had prepared Purple Recovery Potions to restore his body before his consciousness dispersed. 308

Thor later fought beside Captain Marvel against Thanos. Despite his courage, Thanos shattered Mjolnir with one punch, broke Thor’s arm, and destroyed much of his body; Captain Marvel saved him with a Purple Recovery Potion. 319

After Tang was rendered unconscious in his battle with Thanos, Thor carried him into the Heart of the Universe to conceal and protect him from the Multiversal powerhouses gathering around the artifact. 320 321

Thor is a tall, broad, muscular man with long golden hair and strikingly handsome features. During his depowered time on Earth, he is first seen in a hospital gown; after reclaiming his divine power, he manifests gleaming Asgardian armor and a cape. 28 41 42

He is direct to the point of tactlessness, openly announces himself as Thor, and refuses to lie merely because mortals doubt him. He also enjoys drinking, fighting, and competitive challenges, quickly bonding with Tang over all three. 28 29 31 32

Despite his arrogance, Thor is compassionate and capable of profound remorse. Loki’s deception and Thor’s inability to lift his hammer force him to confront the harm caused by his impulsiveness. His willingness to sacrifice himself for the town demonstrates the growth Odin sought. 34 39 40

Thor is notably oblivious to Sif’s feelings, treating anyone who fights beside him as a “brother.” However, he recognizes Tang’s commitment to Natasha and supports his friend’s decision not to pursue Sif. 46 47

Thor is deeply loyal to both his family and his friends. He continues to protect Loki from execution despite Loki’s atrocities, worries intensely when Tang suffers grave injuries, and is willing to risk himself to conceal and defend his unconscious friend within the Heart of the Universe. 57 316 320
