Background / History

After Blackbeard defeats Ace and hands him to the Marines, the Whitebeard Pirates gather aboard the Moby Dick in outrage. Their anger is driven both by Ace’s capture and by Teach’s earlier murder of Thatch. Marco and other commanders volunteer to pursue Teach, but Whitebeard refuses to risk losing more sons to Blackbeard and a possible Marine intervention. 1

Whitebeard instead sends Ye Yu, the hidden Zero Division Captain. The commanders initially doubt the seemingly lazy young man, but Ye Yu subdues Atmos with Conqueror’s Haki and defeats Marco in a duel. His ability to physically strike Phoenix-form Marco and defend himself with an invisible Haki barrier establishes him as the crew’s strongest commander. 2 4 5

Following Ye Yu’s departure, Whitebeard reveals his expectation that the Marines will publicly execute Ace to provoke a war. He orders the commanders not to sail alone, prioritizing the crew’s strength for the coming conflict over immediate revenge. 6

Ye Yu’s destruction of the Blackbeard Pirates avenges both Ace and Thatch, earning him the full recognition and gratitude of the crew. His later killing of Jack the Drought brings the Whitebeard Pirates into direct danger of retaliation from Kaido, but Whitebeard refuses to disavow him. 13 28

Ye Yu annihilates the Blackbeard Pirates on Robina Island. The crew receives the news with celebration, viewing the victory as vengeance for Ace and Thatch. 11 13

Preparation for Ace’s execution

Whitebeard predicts that Sengoku will stage Ace’s public execution and keeps his commanders together to prevent the Marines from weakening the crew through piecemeal captures. 6

Once the execution date is announced, Whitebeard orders the entire crew to prepare for battle. He tells Marco that Ye Yu will meet them at Marineford as part of a plan he has deliberately kept secret. 30

Conflict with the Beast Pirates

Ye Yu kills Jack after Jack’s forces attack him over Artificial Devil Fruits. Kaido interprets the death as an attack on the Beast Pirates’ prestige and orders an expedition against the Whitebeard Pirates. 20 27
