Background

Ye Yu transmigrated into the pirate world ten years before the story’s opening and awakened the Overlord System, which awards Conqueror’s Haki through check-ins and completed missions. His beginner reward gave him 1,000 points of Conqueror’s Haki, enough for an even clash with Whitebeard while he was still under ten years old. Impressed, Whitebeard appointed him the hidden captain of the Zero Division. 1

Ye Yu initially resisted joining any crew, but Whitebeard offered him an isolated restricted zone, daily food and wine, a Television Snail, a Game Snail, manga, and freedom from disturbance except during major crises. Ye Yu accepted, then spent the next decade playing games, fishing, eating, watching television, and checking in daily rather than genuinely cultivating. 1

Before Blackbeard’s betrayal became public, Ye Yu had warned Whitebeard to be wary of Teach. When Ace was captured and Blackbeard’s treachery threatened the crew, Whitebeard called Ye Yu out of seclusion to handle the crisis. 1

Ye Yu is a fresh-faced young man who appears harmless and lazy rather than imposing. His casual appearance repeatedly causes opponents to underestimate him. 1

Personality

Ye Yu is intensely laid-back, food-loving, and averse to inconvenience. He values comfortable lodging, good meals, wine, sleep, games, and television more openly than prestige or responsibility. His initial reason for accepting Whitebeard’s invitation was the guaranteed lifestyle rather than loyalty to piracy. 1 13

Beneath that indolence, he is highly confident and often contemptuous toward opponents he judges weak. He dislikes explaining his powers, prefers ending fights quickly, and may treat world-shaking confrontations as interruptions to his rest. 3 15 34

Ye Yu can also be protective and calculating. He protected Lily from the Blackbeard Pirates, freed enslaved people from the Celestial Dragons, sought alliances to reduce Whitebeard’s casualties, and spared Mihawk after defeating him because Mihawk was more useful alive. 7 18 42 46

His mercy does not extend to enemies he considers cruel or treacherous. He deliberately made Blackbeard’s death painful, killed Akainu without remorse, and executed Saint Charlos after confronting the Celestial Dragons’ treatment of slaves. 11 38 42

Overlord System

Ye Yu’s system grants Conqueror’s Haki points through daily check-ins and rewards him for major accomplishments. Reaching specified thresholds can unlock skills, Devil Fruit abilities, or tenfold draws. 1 6 39

Sabaody Incident

Ye Yu intervenes when Akainu attempts to arrest Bear. He defeats Sentomaru, matches and surpasses Akainu’s magma powers, and kills the Admiral with a magma dragon attack. 32 33 35 38

He then kills Saint Charlos, destroys the slaves’ explosive collars, and openly tells them they are free, making himself a direct enemy of the World Government’s ruling order. 42

Mihawk Recruitment and Kaido Battle

Ye Yu travels with Urouge to Kuraigana Island to recruit Mihawk. After defeating Mihawk in a one-strike sword duel, he persuades the swordsman to infiltrate the Marines and betray them during the war. 45 46 47

Kaido attacks Ye Yu to avenge Jack. Ye Yu neutralizes Kaido’s Bolo Breath with magma mastery and pierces Kaido’s scales with one hundred invisible Haki blades, leaving the Emperor severely wounded. 48 49 50
