Personality
Akainu is ruthlessly devoted to his personal interpretation of “Absolute Justice.” He regards pirates as “scum” and considers retreating Marines unworthy of mercy, executing both a fleeing Marine and a helpless pirate during the Sabaody crisis. 30
His authority and pride are central to his identity. He initially dismisses Ye Yu as an insignificant Whitebeard subordinate, then becomes increasingly unstable when Ye Yu neutralizes his attacks, blocks his Haki, and surpasses his magma control. 33 34 36 37 Even while defeated, he attempts to intimidate Ye Yu with the consequences of killing a Marine admiral. 37
Abilities & Skills
Magma-Magma Fruit
Akainu possesses a Logia-type magma ability, allowing him to transform his body and attacks into destructive molten magma. The system classifies his Devil Fruit development as Intermediate. 26
- Great Eruption — launches a massive volcanic magma fist; it destroys Urouge’s ship and kills his crew. 31
- Meteor Volcano — fires repeated magma fists into the sky, producing a bombardment of molten projectiles. 30 35
- Dog-Bite Crimson Lotus — forms magma into a dog-headed attack. 35

- His magma is absorbed or neutralized by Ye Yu during their battle, and Ye Yu’s superior magma control eventually burns Akainu despite his own resistance to heat. 33 34 35 37
Haki
Akainu uses both Armament and Observation Haki in combat.
- Armament Haki — blocks Urouge’s full-force weapon strike and coats his fist during his assault on Ye Yu. 31 36
- Advanced Observation Haki — narrowly evades Ye Yu’s Dragon-Bite Crimson Lotus after recognizing its danger. 35
- His Armament-coated attacks cannot break Ye Yu’s all-encompassing Conqueror’s Haki barrier. 36
Relationships
- Ye Yu — Enemy and killer. Akainu belittles him as a Whitebeard subordinate, but Ye Yu defeats him with superior magma mastery and kills him with a magma dragon attack. 33 37 38
- Sengoku — Fleet Admiral who assigns him to respond to the Sabaody Celestial Dragon incident; Akainu’s death leaves Sengoku overwhelmed before the coming war. 29 43

- Kizaru — Fellow admiral. Kizaru is present at Marine Headquarters when Sengoku receives confirmation of Akainu’s death. 43
- Urouge — Akainu destroys Urouge’s ship and crew, then leaves him critically injured after dismissing him as a worthless pirate. 31
- Tyrant Bear — Akainu attempts to arrest Bear after Bear aids Luffy and Rayleigh’s escape; Ye Yu interrupts before the arrest can occur. 32
- Sentomaru — Attacks Ye Yu alongside Akainu, but is instantly defeated when Ye Yu’s barrier shatters his axe and repels him. 33
Story Role / Major Arcs
Marineford preparations
As Marine Headquarters prepares for Ace’s public execution and the expected war against Whitebeard, Akainu volunteers to answer the emergency at Sabaody after a Celestial Dragon is attacked. 29
Sabaody Archipelago incident
Akainu arrives at Sabaody in a flaming meteor and establishes the brutality of his “Absolute Justice” by killing a fleeing Marine, massacring pirates with Meteor Volcano, and executing a pirate who cannot reveal Luffy’s location. 30
He confronts Urouge for information on Luffy, destroys Urouge’s ship and crew with Great Eruption, and leaves Urouge severely wounded before pursuing the wider crisis. 31 After Luffy and Rayleigh escape through Bear’s intervention, Akainu moves to arrest Bear. 32
Battle with Ye Yu
Ye Yu intervenes to protect Bear and openly offers to kill Akainu as payment for Bear’s help. Akainu and Sentomaru attack together, but Ye Yu absorbs Akainu’s magma and defeats Sentomaru through an invisible Conqueror’s Haki barrier. 33
Akainu refuses to believe Ye Yu can wield magma, then engages him in a direct contest of Magma-Magma Fruit techniques. Ye Yu copies Meteor Volcano, overwhelms Dog-Bite Crimson Lotus with Dragon-Bite Crimson Lotus, and proves that his magma mastery exceeds Akainu’s. 34 35
Akainu’s all-out assault fails to breach Ye Yu’s barrier. Ye Yu defeats him with Magma Dragon Fist, leaving the admiral incapacitated and severely burned. 36 37
Death and aftermath
Unable to move, Akainu is struck through the heart by Ye Yu’s magma dragon. His body is burned away completely, leaving no remains. 38
Marine Headquarters later confirms that Ye Yu killed Akainu and a Celestial Dragon at Sabaody. Sengoku, Aokiji, Kizaru, and Tsuru recognize the death as a catastrophic loss immediately before the war against Whitebeard. 43
