Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Magic Power |
| Original Name | 魔力 |
| Alias(es) | Mana 20 89 499 |
| Type | Supernatural energy present throughout the world 116 535 |
| Function | Powers spellcasting, Battle Aura, magic circles, and magical devices 124 499 503 |
Nature and Distribution
- Magic Power is not the same as a spell. It is the underlying energy used to produce magic; Battle Aura is another application of that energy 124.
- It exists throughout the environment. Air, food, water, plants, and ordinary rocks contain Magic Power 499 535.
- Most “magicless” people still possess a trace amount. Truly possessing none is an exceptional condition, shared by Cui Ciyou and Nanahoshi Shizuka 499 535.
- Monsters use the same energy as people. Magic-type beasts use mana to cast spells, while Battle Aura-type beasts use it to strengthen their bodies. The distinction between monsters and ordinary animals is a human classification based on these capabilities 116.
- Mental Power is distinct from mana. Cui initially identifies it as a third energy source independent of mana and Battle Aura; he later uses it to direct external mana despite having none of his own 20 89.
Capacity and Control
Mana Reserves
- Early training can increase capacity. Repeatedly depleting mana in early childhood can raise its eventual upper limit; without this training, capacity largely becomes fixed by adolescence 92.
- Reserves do not determine magical rank by themselves. Sylphy possesses reserves comparable to an Emperor-level magician while having mastered only Water Saint-level magic 334.
- Control can compensate for smaller reserves. Blue Stream Blade emphasizes precise mana manipulation and Mental Power rather than an exceptionally large supply 96.
- Recovery rates can vary dramatically. The Human God claims that Orsted requires several decades to recover mana expended in combat 222.
Magical Aptitude
A mage must have enough mana and the mental ability to sense, direct, and shape it 92.
| Threshold | Estimated frequency | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Innate potential to become a mage | About 1 in 20 people | Potential does not guarantee successful training 92. |
| Magic Guild certification | About 1 in 400 people | Requires learning at least Beginner Magic 92. |
| Advanced-level mage | About 1 in 100 certified mages; approximately 1 in 40,000 people overall | Advanced mages may teach in Asla and enjoy high social status 92. |
- Swordsmanship has a lower entry barrier. Most people possess enough mana to produce a trace of Battle Aura and can train toward Beginner swordsman level 92.
- Sensing mana is itself a learned difficulty. Cui helps Sylphy understand its movement through direct mental guidance during Roxy’s lessons 146.
Magical Ranks
Magicians are classified by the highest-level magic they can use, rather than solely by their mana reserves 20 334.
| Rank | Documented examples or characteristics |
|---|---|
| Beginner | Water Ball, Fireball, Earth Wall, Gust, and Beginner Healing are demonstrated by Roxy 89. |
| Intermediate | Includes Water Bullet and Wind Blade 146 158. |
| Advanced | Includes weather- and terrain-altering spells such as Rainfall and Mud Swamp 108. |
| Saint | Lightning Cumulonimbus is Water Saint-level magic 20 93. |
| King | Blue Stream Blade is treated as King-level magic when describing Roxy’s abilities 113. |
| Emperor | Ranoa Magic University’s principal, Georg von Rosenberg, is an Emperor-level wind magician 479 492. |
| God | The highest stated magical rank; Perugius is described as a God-level magician specializing in summoning 20 498. |
Applications
Spellcasting
- Offensive magic uses mana to produce effects involving water, fire, earth, and wind 124.
- Healing magic applies mana to recovery; university healing circles can reattach or regrow limbs, while an Emperor-level circle can save patients on the brink of death 484.
- Summoning magic either relocates existing creatures and objects or creates artificial spirits 516.
- Teleportation magic enables travel through ancient circles. The Displacement Incident is described as an unprecedented, large-scale, random teleportation event 498.
- The Magic Compendium identifies five principal categories: offensive, healing, summoning, Divine Strike, and forbidden transfer magic 44.
Battle Aura
Battle Aura applies Magic Power to the user’s body and weapons rather than primarily to the surrounding environment 124.
- Enhances muscles, stamina, speed, and other physical capabilities 124.
- Reinforces weapons against damage 20.
- Can be released as Battle Aura or sword energy for ranged attacks 124.
- Remains vulnerable to Magic Nullification because its underlying energy is mana 124.
Magic-Model Theory
Cui Ciyou proposes that magic uses Mental Power to guide mana through models that invoke existing natural processes, rather than creating new physical laws 90 94.
| Element | Cui’s proposed mechanism |
|---|---|
| Water | Controlling or assembling water molecules 90 91. |
| Fire | Producing heat and light through particle motion or combustion 90 91. |
| Earth | Manipulating rock, soil, or other matter 90 91. |
| Wind | Directing air currents, pressure, and movement 90 91. |
- Incantations and circles act as aids for concentration, spell construction, and mana guidance under this theory 90.
- Silent casting becomes possible when a caster can reproduce the necessary model without chanting. Roxy eventually casts all her known Advanced offensive spells this way 94 95.
- Silent activation does not guarantee an immediate effect. Large phenomena such as Lightning Cumulonimbus still require time to form and consume substantial mana 95.
- Blue Stream Blade applies the theory to a compressed waterjet, using mana to stabilize its shape and strengthen its cutting properties. Its trajectory can be adjusted within the caster’s mental-perception range 96.
- Nanahoshi’s experiments establish that larger, more complicated summoned objects require more mana, supporting an energy-conservation principle 506.
Storage, Devices, and Measurement
| Medium or device | Relationship to Magic Power |
|---|---|
| Magic Crystals | Provide external mana for Cui’s experiments and magical perception 96 300. |
| Magic wands | Aid concentration and amplify spell output. Most ordinary mages lose at least thirty percent of their strength without one 471 484. |
| Magic Circles | Function as temporary magical organs, using powdered Magic Crystals and stabilizing materials 499. |
| Magic Items | Use inscribed circles powered by the user’s mana; theoretically reusable until that supply runs out 503. |
| Magic-imbued objects | Require no personal mana and replenish internal energy over time, but usually have daily usage limits 503. |
| Dragon-Eye Stones | Measure mana and Battle Aura for security checks and tournament eligibility 321 334. |
- Measurement is not a complete assessment of combat strength. Cui receives an F rating and cannot enter even the tournament’s Beginner Group because he has no personal mana or Battle Aura 321 334.
- Ancient circles can replenish energy unusually quickly. Roxy observes almost no depletion after Cui activates a teleportation circle twice, contrasting it with the university’s slower atmospheric-mana replenishment research 453.
- Large systems can depend on continuous mana circulation. Perugius’s castle facilities, barriers, and Familiars rely on it 528.
Suppression and Limits
Magic Nullification
Cui’s Magic Nullification uses Mental Power to neutralize Magic Power, disabling both spells and Battle Aura 124 364.
- Suppresses aura inside nearby bodies and prevents spells from forming 9 124.
- Can interrupt mana-powered devices or destroy their energy sources if Cui fails to restrain the field 96 242.
- Does not erase physical matter already produced by magic; the author explicitly distinguishes neutralizing mana from cancelling a resulting fireball 364.
- Does not negate sword technique or physical attacks. Skilled opponents can redirect attacks around the field or exploit the time needed to suppress concentrated aura 565 578.
- Can temporarily open a passage through a magically sustained sandstorm, but the storm closes behind Cui as its mana replenishes 420.
Other Means of Neutralization
- Hydra scales and magic-eating grass can neutralize magic or Magic Power 318.
- An Emperor-level barrier encountered in Shirone absorbs and breaks down ambient mana, including energy from nearby Magic Crystals, preventing spells from taking shape inside it 358.
Health and Bodily Compatibility
- Excess mana can be harmful. A Blessed Child’s increasing holy Magic Power exceeds what her body can withstand; Healing Magic worsens the condition because it introduces more of the same energy 318.
- Blessings and curses can depend on mana. Suppressing Zanoba’s mana removes his destructive strength, while suppressing Pax’s lifts the effects that distort his appearance 355.
- Environmental mana is poisonous to the truly Powerless. Dulai Disease affected rare children born with absolutely no Magic Power; ancient accounts state that they usually died before age ten 535.
- Even minimal personal mana offers protection. Modern people described as “magicless” generally retain enough to neutralize ambient mana and avoid Dulai Disease 535.
- Cui’s body actively rejects outside mana. Perugius describes it as refusing influx or penetration, unlike a body capable of holding Magic Power 528.
Background / History
According to the ancient records Roxy teaches, magic first developed when an intelligent race learned from “spirits” to command natural forces. Humans and Demonfolk later spent thousands of years imitating and deciphering one another’s magic, organizing it into the modern incantation-based system 131.
Magic Circles were once used extensively: ancient magicians prepared their bodies, clothing, and weapons with many circles before missions. Ordinary circles declined because they were expensive, labor-intensive, and usually vanished after one use. Incantations became the preferred method, while the techniques behind indefinitely reusable ancient circles were largely lost 499.
