Background / History
Madara had died before the Nine-Tails’ Attack, but had already manipulated Obito Uchiha into serving as his proxy. Obito’s later actions, including the Nine-Tails’ Attack, were described as part of Madara’s prior influence. 9
He is resurrected much earlier than expected through the Rinnegan and immediately resumes the collection of Tailed Beasts. His first confirmed appearance pits him against Ensei near Sunagakure, where he destroys the village’s sealing barrier and confronts Ensei over the One-Tail. 61 63
Madara initially pursues the Infinite Tsukuyomi and Ten-Tails plan. Ensei’s revelations about Black Zetsu, Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, and Madara’s original future force him to reconsider whether he has spent his life serving someone else’s design. Though he abandons the Infinite Tsukuyomi as an achievable goal, he retains his ambition to end conflict by creating a single world order. 103 104 145
He founds Akatsuki on the former territory of Amegakure after killing the Land of Rain’s daimyō and officials. The organization develops into the Land of Dawn, which expands through military conquest while attracting support through the abolition of noble taxation and improved civilian conditions. 87 130 145
Madara later attempts to dismantle the daimyō system across the Ninja World. His campaign leads to the assassination of rulers and nobles in smaller nations, coercive political summits, and the collapse of the old order. 168 177 180 188
Personality
Madara is proud, combative, and deeply confident in his own strength. He treats powerful opponents as worthy sources of excitement, initially regarding Ensei as an exceptional but inexperienced junior and later acknowledging him as the one opponent he cannot confidently defeat. 63 76 178
His worldview is pessimistic but not static. He initially argues that human nature cannot change and that peace requires an eternal illusion. After learning of Black Zetsu’s manipulation, he redirects his goal toward political unification, believing that one nation and one ninja village would minimize war. 76 104 145
Despite his ruthlessness, Madara displays practical concern for governance and civilians under his control. He worries that Ensei’s financial demands could halt the Land of Dawn’s development and recognizes that conquest without administrators is unsustainable. 152 168
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Madara’s Rinnegan grants him overwhelming ocular power, exceptional endurance, and access to techniques that ordinary shinobi struggle to counter.
- Uses Limbo: Border Jail to create invisible combat duplicates with physical strength comparable to his own. 64 107
- Absorbs chakra-based ninjutsu through the Rinnegan’s absorption ability. 77
- Uses Planetary Devastation and Tengai Shinsei during his battle with Hashirama. 178 179
- Can fly through Rinnegan power. 178
- The Rinnegan automatically dispels Hashirama’s Bringer-of-Darkness genjutsu. 179
- His revived Rinnegan cannot naturally revert to Mangekyō Sharingan, preventing him from using Mangekyō-specific powers and basic Sharingan perception simultaneously. 147
Limbo: Border Jail
Madara’s signature Rinnegan technique creates invisible clones that are difficult to perceive and can intercept attacks for him.
- Uses two Limbo clones to immobilize Ensei and place a Flying Thunder God mark on him. 76
- Fields four Limbo clones in later battles, forcing opponents to fight Madara and several near-identical invisible attackers at once. 107 179
- Can use Limbo clones as substitutes to avoid otherwise decisive attacks. 107 110
- Hashirama can sense their attacks through Sage Mode, eventually locating and temporarily sealing all four with Sage Art: Gate of the Great God. 178 179
Susanoo
Madara manifests a Rinnegan-enhanced Perfect Susanoo with immense offensive and defensive power.
- His Perfect Susanoo gradually destroys Ensei’s regenerating Hamura statue without sustaining meaningful damage. 64
- Matches Ensei’s similarly sized Perfect Susanoo, but Madara’s Rinnegan provides superior endurance. 76
- Is cracked and later shattered by coordinated Night Guy attacks from Ensei’s Eighth Gate clones. 110
- Uses Perfect Susanoo against Hashirama’s Sage Art: Wood Human Technique. 178
- His Ten-Tails-enhanced Complete Body Susanoo later clashes with Ensei’s Nine-Tomoe Sharingan-enhanced Susanoo. 205
Flying Thunder God Technique
Madara learns the Flying Thunder God Technique from Tobirama Senju’s records in order to counter Ensei’s mobility. 76
- Marks Ensei during their first battle at the Ninja Cat Clan territory. 76
- Uses the technique offensively, though his early lack of proficiency creates a brief opening for Ensei. 77
- Escapes Ensei’s coordinated Eighth Gate clone assault with Flying Thunder God after using Limbo to survive the initial attacks. 110
- Uses prearranged Flying Thunder God positioning to evade his own meteors and free his Limbo clones from Hashirama’s sealing technique. 179
Hashirama Cells and Wood Release
Madara possesses Hashirama Cells, granting him regeneration and an imitation of Wood Release.
- Regenerates injuries inflicted by Evening Elephant with visible speed. 79
- Uses Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence against Hashirama, but Hashirama’s genuine Wood Release overwhelms it because it contains true life force. 177
- Would need to sacrifice multiple White Zetsu to reproduce Wood Release comparable to Hashirama’s. 177
Izanagi Reserves
Madara keeps spare Three-Tomoe Sharingan as resources for Izanagi.
- Recovers three Sharingan from the Uchiha compound fire for future Izanagi use. 107
- His spare eyes and Limbo clones make direct attempts to kill him especially unreliable. 107
Ten-Tails’ Jinchūriki Power
As the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, Madara gains power approaching Kaguya’s level, including Truth-Seeking Orbs and greatly enhanced physical ability. 205 206
- Forms weapons from Truth-Seeking Orbs for close-quarters combat. 206
- Retains Limbo and Susanoo while strengthened by the Ten-Tails. 205
- His power compensates for Ensei’s physical advantage, producing an early stalemate before Ensei gains further strength. 205
- Is vulnerable to Black Zetsu’s manipulation until Ensei forcibly removes and seals Black Zetsu. 206
Relationships
- Uchiha Ensei — Rival, ideological opponent, and eventual political counterpart. Madara first regards Ensei as an impressive junior, then comes to view him as an unpredictable enemy he cannot confidently defeat. 63 76 178
- Hashirama Senju — Lifelong rival and former friend. Their revived confrontation ends with Madara victorious, though he finds little satisfaction in defeating an exhausted Hashirama. 152 177 180
- Obito Uchiha — Former proxy and ally whom Madara had manipulated before his death. Obito later fights alongside him during the conflict with Ensei. 9 64
- Black Zetsu — Secret manipulator who altered the Uchiha stone tablet and guided Madara toward Kaguya’s resurrection. Madara eventually accepts that Black Zetsu deceived him. 104 145
- Nagato — Preserved as a contingency for Madara’s resurrection through a false Rinnegan containing a Rinne Rebirth Transcription Seal. Madara later kills him when the contingency is no longer needed. 196
- Orochimaru — Administrator and researcher working under Madara in the Land of Dawn. Madara values Orochimaru’s financial and strategic aptitude. 152
- Uchiha Clan — Many members are drawn to Madara’s name and promise of an “endless dream,” though Madara himself has long abandoned the clan as a personal priority. 105 107
Story Role / Major Arcs
Resurrection and the Sunagakure Attack
Madara returns through the Rinnegan and moves to seize the One-Tail. He attacks Sunagakure, destroys its sealing barrier, and battles Ensei, who ultimately escapes with Chiyo after failing to defeat him directly. 61 63 64
First Battle with Ensei
Madara tracks Ensei to the Ninja Cat Clan territory after learning Flying Thunder God. Their battle moves to the Valley of the End, where Madara’s Rinnegan, Limbo clones, and superior stamina force Ensei to abandon a direct Susanoo clash. 75 80
Founding Akatsuki and the Land of Dawn
After Black Zetsu is sealed by Ensei, Madara establishes Akatsuki in the former Land of Rain. He recruits powerful shinobi, conquers territory, and transforms his state into the Land of Dawn. 87 102 130
Abandoning Infinite Tsukuyomi
Ensei reveals Black Zetsu’s manipulation and shows Madara a vision of his original future. Madara does not immediately surrender his ideals, but eventually concludes that Infinite Tsukuyomi cannot be trusted and begins pursuing peace through political unification instead. 103 104 108 145
Rematch with Hashirama
After Hashirama’s revival, Madara accepts a second battle with his old rival. He uses dual Rinnegan abilities, Limbo, Perfect Susanoo, Planetary Devastation, and meteors to defeat Hashirama after exhausting him. 167 177 180
Ten-Tails’ Jinchūriki Conflict
Madara later becomes the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki amid Omnipotence’s influence, developing an obsessive hatred of Ensei. Their battle ends without a decisive kill after Ensei removes Black Zetsu and retreats rather than fight the approaching Allied Shinobi Forces. 205 206
Struggle for the Ten-Tails
Madara returns as a complete Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki and confronts an Ensei empowered by a Chakra Fruit. Ensei immediately seizes the nine Tailed Beasts inside the Ten-Tails, turning their conflict into a struggle for control over its power. 209
Trivia
- Madara’s first reaction to Ensei’s Flying Thunder God is surprise that an Uchiha learned Tobirama Senju’s technique. 63
- He hates Flying Thunder God in part because Tobirama used it in the conflict that led to Izuna Uchiha’s death. 177
- Madara admits that he could not have defeated Hashirama in their original battle without the Nine-Tails’ assistance. 179
- He considers Ensei’s growth rate abnormal, noting that Ensei appears to gain a qualitatively new level of strength in nearly every encounter. 144
