Background / History

Ensei was orphaned as an infant and received limited material support from the Uchiha Clan. His talent earned him better treatment than most children, including food, instruction, and the care of his cousin Uchiha Inabi, but he largely developed through independent study and planning. He had extracted chakra by age three and understood that raw talent alone could not protect him from future Mangekyō Sharingan users or Konoha’s hostility toward the Uchiha. 1 2

At age five, Ensei concluded that Minato Namikaze’s appointment as Hokage began the countdown to the Nine-Tails’ Attack and the Uchiha Clan Massacre. He created a disguised Shadow Clone, removed all detectable scent from an envelope, and delivered Minato intelligence concerning Obito, Kushina’s childbirth, and the planned attack. The clone’s delayed return caused Ensei severe anxiety and mental pain, but its memories confirmed that Minato had received the warning. 1 2

Ensei chose medical ninjutsu and chakra science over conventional Uchiha combat training. With Inabi’s support and Fugaku’s approval, he studied Konoha’s medical records, established a summoning contract with the Ninja Cat Clan, and built a laboratory near Cat Ninja Village. During the Nine-Tails’ Attack, he ignored Inabi’s evacuation order, ambushed chakra thieves, and seized a sealing device containing scattered Nine-Tails chakra for research. 3 4

By age ten, his experiments and unusual ocular power made both Konoha and the Uchiha suspicious of him. After defeating Shisui’s attempt to use Kotoamatsukami, Ensei openly disclosed his future knowledge to Shisui and Fugaku. He forced the issue of Danzō’s stolen Sharingan, assaulted Danzō in the Hokage’s office, and leveraged his power into political concessions for the Uchiha Clan. Over time, Ensei’s initially improvised research evolved into a vast program involving clone cultivation, Tailed Beast chakra, Sage Power, ocular transplantation, artificial life, and Yin–Yang Release. Orochimaru’s research later confirms that Ensei’s ability to direct cellular growth is an innate talent rather than a reproducible technique, forcing him to recognize both the value and the limits of his self-taught methods. 70 117

After becoming strong enough to contend with Madara and the Ōtsutsuki, Ensei increasingly treats his original body, clones, and sealed powers as separate assets to be managed. Appearance

Ensei’s appearance is closely tied to the unstable evolution of his eyes. His ordinary Uchiha eyes can return to a Three-Tomoe Sharingan state, but his higher ocular states have produced increasingly abnormal coloration and patterns. 6 26 50

Personality

Ensei is cautious, analytical, and intensely survival-driven. His early actions are built around secrecy: he uses clones, masks, scent removal, false routines, transformations, and contingency plans rather than trusting superior opponents or political institutions. Even after gaining power, he remains suspicious of traps and prefers to force enemies to approach ground he has prepared. 1 24 29 48

He is bluntly contemptuous of leaders he considers weak or hypocritical, particularly Fugaku, Hiruzen, Danzō, and Shisui. He repeatedly uses future knowledge to pressure others into action, but does not regard prophecy as infallible after his interventions alter the timeline. 8 11 23

His research is pragmatic to the point of moral detachment. He considers cloning to be the creation of new life, uses condemned criminals and captured enemies as subjects, and treats bloodlines, bodies, souls, and ocular powers as materials for experimentation. Nevertheless, he states that his goal is to ensure that neither he nor those he cares about can be harmed. 15 30

As his power grows, Ensei becomes increasingly authoritarian and willing to impose his judgment on clans, villages, daimyō, and even the Uchiha Clan itself. After revealing his future knowledge and power to Fugaku and Shisui, Ensei openly confronts Danzō and Hiruzen over stolen Sharingan and Root experimentation. Ensei treats Shisui’s capture as both a rescue crisis and a source of intelligence. His battles with Obito and Black Zetsu rely on Shadow Clones, artificial humans, sealing, and explosive traps. Ocular Evolution and the Little Ten-Tails

Following an unsuccessful attempt to force his own Mangekyō awakening, Ensei discovers and cultivates the Little Ten-Tails.
