Background

Obito was presumed lost after the Third Shinobi War. Following Rin Nohara’s death, he abandoned his former identity and sought out Madara Uchiha, later acting as Madara’s puppet and representative. He repeatedly visited Rin’s grave and witnessed Kakashi Hatake grieving there, despite claiming he no longer cared about the world. 1 9 12

He orchestrated the Nine-Tails’ Attack using his Mangekyō Sharingan and space-time ninjutsu. Minato Namikaze exposed and restrained him, but hesitated in an attempt to save him; Black Zetsu exploited that opening to ambush Minato instead. Obito survived the incident with lasting throat damage, leaving his natural voice hoarse. 5 12

Uchiha Yansheng’s disclosure of Obito’s identity destroyed the security of his masked persona. Obito began gathering information on Yansheng through White Zetsu, became interested in Yansheng’s claimed future sight, and used Shisui Uchiha as leverage to draw him out of Konoha. 22

Appearance

Obito initially appears in a mask and conceals his identity behind the name “Madara Uchiha.” He later abandons the mask and reveals his true face. 12 23

Personality

Obito presents himself as detached from the world, but his actions reveal an enduring obsession with Rin. Danzō’s threat to desecrate or control Rin’s body causes his restrained grief to become focused, extreme violence; he is willing to threaten Root and Konoha’s entire population to recover her. 12 13

His encounter with Rin’s reanimated body forces him to confront emotions he had suppressed. Although the experience softens and stabilizes him somewhat, he continues to support the Eye of the Moon Plan because he considers the real world too corrupt and painful for Rin to live in. 23

Obito is also increasingly suspicious of Black Zetsu. After Izanagi restores Obito but fails to affect Black Zetsu, he begins questioning Black Zetsu’s origins and connection to Madara’s plans. 24

Obito is identified as the attacker behind the Nine-Tails’ release. Minato exposes him and attempts to save him, but Black Zetsu’s intervention leaves Minato in a deep coma while Obito escapes. 5 9

Conflict with Danzō over Rin

Danzō steals Rin’s body and threatens to use Impure World Reincarnation to force Obito to capture Yansheng. Obito retaliates against Root, retrieves both Rin’s original corpse and reanimated body, then kills Danzō after learning the Human Path may restore Rin’s consciousness. 12 13 14

Hunt for Shisui and Yansheng

Obito captures Shisui and uses him to demand that Yansheng leave Konoha and meet him. His White Zetsu surveillance reveals Yansheng’s claimed ability to see the future, making that power a new objective for both Obito and Black Zetsu. 22

Break with the “Madara” Persona

When confronting Yansheng without his mask, Obito acknowledges that he is not omniscient and begins facing the emptiness behind his assumed identity. Rin’s reappearance helps him confront some grief, but not abandon the Eye of the Moon Plan. 23
