Background / History

Yu Xiaogang previously spent time in Spirit Hall and claimed to retain a connection to the organization. He was also Bibi Dong's lover when she was Spirit Hall's Holy Maiden, a past relationship that continued to shape both of their actions long after their separation 22 136.

He became known throughout the Soul Master world as its foremost theoretical master, though his theories remained contentious. He is intensely unwilling to accept criticism of them, treating challenges to his work as challenges to his personal worth 21.

Yu Xiaogang became Tang San's mentor and came to regard him as a son. He withheld Tang Hao's identity at Tang Hao's request, later revealing that Tang San's father was the Clear Sky Douluo and framing the secrecy as an act of protection 61.

He worries over Tang San's injuries, considers him akin to a son, and repeatedly prioritizes his disciple's future over his own dignity or other relationships 61 66 163. This loyalty can become moral compromise: when Tang San is found beside the unconscious Liu Erlong, Yu Xiaogang conceals Tang San's involvement and accepts personal blame to protect his disciple and Shrek's stability 163 164.

Encounters with Dongfang Yu

Yu Xiaogang first observes Dongfang Yu in Nuoding City and later shares a meal with Dongfang Yu, Hu Liena, and Tang San. He mistakes Dongfang Yu's outward respect for genuine admiration, offering cultivation guidance while failing to recognize the mockery behind it 20 22.

Dongfang Yu later uses Yu Xiaogang's name to test Bibi Dong's emotions, falsely praising him as a great theoretical master. Bibi Dong's pleased reaction confirms to Dongfang Yu that she still cares deeply about Yu Xiaogang 23.

Shrek Academy's mentor

After Xiao Wu is captured, Yu Xiaogang comforts the injured Tang San, investigates the unknown enemy, and realizes that Tang San's lost Soul Tool may contain dangerous hidden-weapon blueprints 66 67.

Spirit Hall's pressure on Shrek eventually leaves Yu Xiaogang without stable work. He is reduced to washing dishes at the Good Fortune Restaurant and flees in humiliation when Tang San discovers him there 88 89.

At Blue Tyrant Academy, he continues training Shrek while pinning his hopes on Tang San's talent and the upcoming Soul Master Elite Tournament. His desire to prove that neither he nor his theories are “trash” becomes a central motivation 132 135.

Captivity and audience with Bibi Dong

When Yu Xiaogang travels toward Spirit City to seek Bibi Dong, Hu Liena's people capture him immediately upon his arrival. Dongfang Yu and Hu Liena subject him to prolonged torture, force him into menial service, and coerce a Martial Soul oath preventing him from revealing his treatment; the oath permits him to discuss the secret of Twin Martial Souls 148 149 150.

After his release, Yu Xiaogang reaches Spirit Hall and requests Bibi Dong's guidance for Tang San's Twin Martial Souls. Bibi Dong refuses, challenges his claim that Tang San could never be her enemy, and has him expelled from the Papal Hall 151 153.

Tournament and later decline

During the Soul Master Elite Tournament finals, Yu Xiaogang concludes that Dongfang Yu is stronger than the rest of Spirit Hall's team and that Shrek cannot defeat him, even with Tang San's Martial Soul Avatar 170 171.

Yu Yuanzhen later beats Yu Xiaogang for attempting to help Tang Hao and Tang San against Spirit Hall. He warns his son that Bibi Dong is no longer the woman Yu Xiaogang knew and that her old feelings offer no protection 174 180.

A year later, Yu Xiaogang's right leg is crushed by a falling tree in an incident secretly orchestrated by the Rakshasa God; the injury is presented as one that will leave him reliant on a wheelchair for life 242.

War against Spirit Hall

After the destruction of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect, Yu Xiaogang reunites with Tang San in the Star Luo Empire. They pledge revenge against Spirit Hall, and the Heaven Dou Empire subsequently appoints Yu Xiaogang as its chief military advisor in the war against the Spirit Hall Empire 285.
