Background

Sea Dragon is Hai Ming’s grandfather. When Hai Ming was born, the normally calm sea churned and countless sea creatures surfaced and cried toward the sky; Sea Dragon named him Hai Ming in response to the omen and his expectations for the boy’s future 1.

He serves at the Sea Dragon Divine Pillar and personally conducts martial-soul awakenings. He retrieves Hai Ming for his awakening after the boy forgets the ceremony, then is stunned when Kyogre manifests as Hai Ming’s conscious martial soul 1 2.

Sea Dragon initially objects when Bo Saixi orders six-year-old Hai Ming to undertake the Sea God assessment. After Hai Ming receives the Sea God’s Nine Trials, however, he supports his grandson’s cultivation while remaining concerned about the burden placed on him 2 3 7.

Sea Dragon is the only Sacred Pillar Guardian of his generation known to have completed the Sea God’s Black-Level Six Trials. By the time Zhu Zhuqing undergoes her assessment, his Soul Power has long surpassed level 95 129.

Although Hai Ming’s rapid growth repeatedly exceeds his expectations, Sea Dragon continues acting as his protector, instructor, and emotional anchor. He worries especially when Hai Ming leaves Sea God Island to develop Kyogre’s oceanic authority, privately wishing that his grandson could have lived an ordinary life beside his family instead 134.

Sea Dragon is a bare-chested, powerfully built man with long dark-blue hair falling past his shoulders. A blue dragon image spans the muscles of his back 1.

Beneath that severity, he is openly proud, protective, and indulgent toward Hai Ming; he worries over suitable birthday gifts, ensures Hai Ming properly pays for a treasured pendant, and accompanies him on dangerous soul-bone hunts 1 7 9 13.

As a combatant, he is composed, practical, and experienced. He prevents Hai Ming from challenging enemies beyond his ability, but deliberately allows him to confront manageable danger so he can understand the cruelty of the soul master world firsthand 13 20.

His mentorship is demanding rather than overprotective. When Hai Ming boasts that he can defeat all seven Sacred Pillar Guardians, Sea Dragon responds by arranging a serious spar to teach him the difference between confidence and underestimating a Titled Douluo 130.

Sea Dragon also possesses a lighter and more mischievous side around those close to him. He banters with Hai Ming, teases him about Zhu Zhuqing, enjoys tea Hai Ming introduced him to, and joins Tang Chen in teasing his grandson during their fishing trip 7 22 149 158.

Hai Ming’s Awakening

Sea Dragon brings Hai Ming to the Sea Dragon Divine Pillar for his martial-soul awakening. He is shocked when Kyogre manifests with a divine aura that exceeds his own, then witnesses Hai Ming receive the Sea God’s Nine Trials 1 2.

Early Sea God Trials

Though he cannot remain beside Hai Ming throughout the forbidden-ground training, Sea Dragon monitors his progress closely and is astonished when Hai Ming gains fifteen levels in one year, reaching approximately level 35.5 7.

He later helps Hai Ming acquire the jade pendant connected to the Seven Treasure Glazed Sect, insisting that the merchant accept payment rather than surrender it for free 8 9.

Soul-Bone Hunt

At Bo Saixi’s request, Sea Dragon escorts Hai Ming and Little White to hunt hostile sea soul beasts for Soul Bones. He identifies the ninety-thousand-year Eight-headed Belcher as their first target, explains its biology and history of betrayal, and refuses to let Hai Ming challenge it directly 13.

Sea Dragon kills the Belcher with Divine Dragon Skybreak and gives its complete right-arm Soul Bone to Hai Ming 14. He later attempts to help Hai Ming compress his soul power, only to learn from Kyogre that Hai Ming’s meridians were already expanded to their limit 15.

Sawtooth Shark Hunt and First Blood

Sea Dragon locates a wounded sixty-thousand-year Sawtooth Shark by using his own blood as bait. He orders Hai Ming to fight independently while he and Little White observe, intervening only through the controlled battlefield conditions 16.

When hostile soul masters attempt to seize Hai Ming’s Soul Bone, Sea Dragon allows Hai Ming to kill their leader himself, then eliminates the remaining injured attackers. He explains that the experience was intended to expose Hai Ming to the harshness of the wider soul master world 20.

Waterfall City Rescue

Sea Dragon accompanies Hai Ming and Little White to Waterfall City. When Zhu Zhuqing is pursued by a Soul Emperor and two Soul Kings, he defeats the two Soul Kings immediately and protects Hai Ming while Little White pursues the fleeing Soul Emperor 21 22.

Sacred Pillar Spar

After Hai Ming claims that he can defeat all seven Sacred Pillar Guardians, Sea Dragon challenges him to a serious spar at the far end of the Inland Ring Sea. Little White clears her clan from the area and acts as referee while Sea Dragon employs Sea Dragon True Form to ensure that Hai Ming understands the threat posed by a genuine Titled Douluo 130.

Hai Ming uses Poison Dragon Strangulation and Hyper Beam to pressure Sea Dragon, while Sea Dragon counters with Dragon Mark and Reverse-Scale Dragon Claw. The duel demonstrates Sea Dragon’s power, experience, and refusal to indulge Hai Ming’s arrogance even as he recognizes his grandson’s extraordinary growth 130.

Fifth Sea God Trial

Sea Dragon joins the other Sacred Pillar Guardians in facing Hai Ming during the latter’s fifth Sea God Trial. As the strongest guardian, he lasts more than ten minutes against his grandson, but is ultimately defeated after Hai Ming reaches the Soul Douluo level 151.

Despite the defeat, Hai Ming immediately tends to Sea Dragon afterward, and the other guardians tease him over being the final guardian to fall 151.

Deep Sea Demonic Whale King Expedition

Sea Dragon accompanies Hai Ming, Zhu Zhuqing, Tang Chen, Bo Saixi, and Big White toward the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King’s territory. During the journey, he joins the group’s leisurely fishing outing and examines the Deep-Sea Void Whale’s unusual Soul Bone 158 160.

When the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King attacks a civilian ship, Sea Dragon and another Titled Douluo lift the damaged vessel away from the Whale King. He later watches the battle anxiously, aware that the Whale King’s final desperate eruption is dangerous even to him 161 163.

Shrek Assessments and Later Reunion

When Tang San’s group arrives on Sea God Island, Hai Ming directs the patrol to escort them to Sea Dragon for their assessments. Sea Dragon administers their Sea God Trials, explains the assessment system, and is repeatedly shocked by the Black-Level Six Trials earned by the Shrek members 198 199 200.

After Hai Ming and Zhu Zhuqing disappear into other worlds for eleven years, Sea Dragon remains worried alongside the rest of their family. He is moved to tears when the pair finally returns and immediately arranges for Hai Ming’s parents to be informed so the family can reunite 344.
