Background

A twenty-first-century Naruto fan dies in an accident and awakens in the body of Hyuga Neji on the eve of the Chunin Exams. Although the body retains Neji’s inherited battle instincts and Byakugan, the newcomer is immediately confronted with the reality of the Caged Bird Seal: it is bound to his flesh, chakra, and survival. Determined not to die as Neji did in the original timeline, he makes freedom from the seal his overriding goal. 1

He uses foreknowledge to engineer an encounter with Orochimaru during the Forest of Death. The attempt succeeds only partially: Orochimaru brands him with the Earth Curse Mark after noticing both his courage and the Caged Bird Seal, then invites him to seek the Hidden Sound Village. The two curse marks clash violently, establishing a recurring threat to Neji’s body and mind. 2

After becoming a Chunin, Neji begins training under Might Guy in the Eight Gates and studies seals through Inoichi Yamanaka to suppress the Earth Curse Mark. When Sasuke defects, Neji persuades Tsunade to authorize a plan in which he will infiltrate Orochimaru’s forces and secretly transmit intelligence to Konoha. 3 4

His apparent defection becomes real in the public record when Konoha designates him an A-rank rogue ninja with a five-million-ryo bounty. In reality, Tsunade, Hiashi, and ANBU maintain the cover necessary for his infiltration, while Neji endures Orochimaru’s experimentation and secretly relays intelligence to Konoha. 7 8

Over more than three years, Neji evolves from a desperate branch-family prodigy into a multilayered operative serving his own freedom above every faction. His pursuit of Sage Arts, all-attribute chakra, Hashirama Cells, the Flying Thunder God, Ten-Tails chakra, and ultimately the Tenseigan is driven by his conviction that only overwhelming power can destroy the system that made him a slave. 10 18 41 106

Appearance

Neji initially appears as a handsome teenage Hyuga with pale Byakugan eyes and the green Caged Bird Seal prominently branded on his forehead. His prolonged training, experimentation, and Sage transformation leave him visibly scarred and increasingly inhuman in appearance. 1 8 11

  • Caged Bird Seal — green curse-mark pattern across his forehead until its purification through the Tenseigan. 1 106
  • Sage Mode — jade-white horns, pale golden rings around the Byakugan, and serpentine vertical pupils. 11 14
  • Sage transformation scars — carries numerous scars from Orochimaru’s training and the Ryuchi Cave trial. 8 11
  • Hashirama-cell imprint — a woody, face-like mark develops on his chest and becomes active when he uses Yang Release. 18
  • Forehead ribbon — wears a dark-red chakra-bearing ribbon to conceal his seal and Sage traits in public. 14
  • Sake disguise — uses a White Zetsu biological mask, altered pupils, battered wandering-ninja armor, and a katana while infiltrating Akatsuki. The mask is destroyed when Ten-Tails chakra triggers his Tenseigan evolution, revealing his true identity. 20 106
  • Tenseigan — his evolved eyes possess jade-turquoise pupils, faint starlight-like patterns, and pale golden markings around the eye sockets. He can reduce their visible glow to an almost ordinary white-eyed appearance. 106 108
  • Postwar appearance — wears simple white robes and has long white hair, while his presence and eyes make ordinary villagers instinctively keep their distance. 118 149

Personality

Neji is calculating, cautious, and exceptionally goal-driven. His foreknowledge gives him a strategic advantage, but he recognizes that information alone cannot protect him from the Akatsuki, Orochimaru, or the future war. He therefore treats knowledge, training, alliances, and deception as resources to be used for survival. 1 10

Freedom is his defining motive. He regards the Caged Bird Seal as a denial of dignity rather than merely a physical restraint, and repeatedly accepts torture, experimentation, mutation, and the possibility of losing his humanity in pursuit of a way to break it. 9 10 16

Despite his controlled exterior and willingness to deceive allies and enemies alike, Neji remains emotionally attached to Konoha, Team Guy, Hinata, and even Hiashi. His undercover work becomes increasingly painful as he must protect Akatsuki’s interests while covertly aiding Konoha and witnessing people he cares about suffer. 25 33 41 45

After attaining the Tenseigan, Neji becomes more detached, authoritative, and willing to use fear against people who attempt to restrain him through conventional rank or politics. Nevertheless, he declines public glory, preserves his alliances with Sasuke and Orochimaru, assists Tenten’s family weapon shop, and chooses an ordinary future with Tenten over ruling the shinobi world. 109 110 133

He increasingly accepts responsibility for the consequences of altering the original timeline. This is especially apparent in his decision to support Sasuke’s reformist ambitions, protect the future of the liberated Hyuga Clan, and seek a way to help Hinata develop confidence before he leaves Konoha with Tenten. 113 140 149

Abilities & Skills

Byakugan and Gentle Fist

Neji inherits the Hyuga clan’s Byakugan and Gentle Fist expertise, using precise chakra strikes to disrupt opponents’ chakra pathways.

  • Can see through walls and track chakra signatures over distance. 1 5
  • Uses the Byakugan for reconnaissance while conserving chakra during prolonged operations. 5
  • Expands Eight Trigrams Palm from its earlier form to 128 strikes. 8
  • Uses Gentle Fist Secret Art: Acupoint Kill to destroy Kidomaru’s chakra pathways around the heart. 5
  • Orochimaru’s experiments reveal a deeper internal structure within his Byakugan and the potential for evolution. 8
  • Hashirama-cell fusion grants limited perception of life energy, natural-energy pathways, and Yang Release particles through the Byakugan. 16
  • His Byakugan evolution later stalls despite his broader growth. 35
  • The Byakugan ultimately evolves into the Tenseigan after Neji stabilizes the chakra of all nine Tailed Beasts. 106

Tenseigan and Six Paths Power

The Tenseigan elevates Neji beyond conventional shinobi and Kage-level power, allowing him to reach what he describes as the Sage of Six Paths’ realm. 106 109

  • Purifies Neji’s individual Caged Bird Seal and allows him to destroy the ancient apparatus that maintained every branch-house seal. 106
  • Produces overwhelming ocular pressure; Neji incapacitates Kurotsuchi without physical contact merely by focusing his Tenseigan on her. 109
  • Grants extraordinarily expanded perception of chakra, thoughts, Natural Energy, and distant activity across the shinobi world. 111 118
  • Enables advanced space-folding movement beyond his conventional Flying Thunder God teleportation. 127
  • Allows the use and control of Truth-Seeking Balls. 127
  • Supports Six Paths-level techniques including Sage Art: Inorganic Reincarnation and highly destructive Dust Release. 127
  • Allows him to enhance others directly, including helping Kakashi naturally control a transplanted Sharingan and instantly filling Kakashi’s Yin Seal with an immense reserve of chakra. 120

Ryuchi Cave Sage Arts

Neji masters Ryuchi Cave Sage Arts after surviving the Ten-Thousand Snake Cave trial, balancing natural, physical, and spiritual energy at a 1:1:1 ratio. 11

  • Generates Sage Art Chakra, which enhances his physical abilities, perception, recovery, and chakra output. 11 14
  • Sage Art Chakra temporarily suppresses the Caged Bird Seal rather than removing it. 11 12
  • Gains Dragon-Transformation Horns that gather natural energy and amplify Sage Art Chakra. 11
  • Possesses Sage Art Eye: Natural Vision, allowing him to perceive elemental and Yin-Yang energy in the environment. 12
  • Can sense activity within fifty meters without activating the Byakugan. 12
  • Sage Mode continuously consumes natural-energy reserves and causes a painful adaptation period involving mutation and hallucinations. 12 14
  • Uses Sage Mode in conjunction with Wood Release to create poisonous forest terrain through Wood Release: Flower Tree World Advent. 68

Eight Gates

Neji trains under Might Guy to supplement the Gentle Fist with high-risk taijutsu.

  • Opens the First Gate after one month of training. 3
  • Reliably opens the Third Gate after Orochimaru’s three-month training program. 8
  • Uses the First Gate against Kidomaru to execute Acupoint Kill. 5
  • Reaches the Fifth Gate during his all-nature conversion training. 27
  • Cultivates the Sixth Gate by the time Akatsuki possesses seven Tailed Beasts. 35
  • Briefly opens the Seventh Gate: Gate of Shock, generating immense physical power and blue vapor through extreme bodily strain. 105
  • The technique damages chakra pathways and carries escalating physical risk; opening the Eighth Gate is fatal. 3

Chakra-Nature Conversion

Neji is initially natureless: he has no innate elemental affinity, though he can produce minute traces of all five basic natures. He treats this limitation as the foundation for an artificial all-affinity chakra system. 9 10

  • Chooses Lightning Release first for its compatibility with nerve conduction, muscles, and the Eight Gates. 10
  • Completes Lightning conversion, but initially suffers violent rejection when attempting Fire conversion. 15
  • Uses Sage Art Chakra and Hashirama-cell-derived Yang Release to stabilize subsequent conversions. 15 16
  • Achieves all five basic chakra natures: Lightning, Fire, Water, Earth, and Wind. 27
  • Develops the conversion of all seven chakra natures, including Yin and Yang Release, by the period of the Seven-Tails sealing. 35
  • Continues pursuing deeper Yin-Yang and Six Paths applications beyond simple elemental conversion. 41 127

Kekkei Genkai and Advanced Ninjutsu

Neji develops several elemental combinations and specialized releases in addition to Wood Release.

  • Uses Earth-and-Water Release techniques, including Earth Release: Rock Coffin, Rock Flow Fortress Wall, Swamp of the Underworld, and enhanced Hidden Mist techniques while maintaining Sake’s cover. 21 26 28
  • Presents Petrifying Touch as Sake’s personal Kekkei Genkai, using it to harden or petrify Earth and Water Release constructs. 20 21 28
  • Uses Crystal Release: Emerald Crystal Wall to block and redirect Sasuke’s Chidori Sharp Spear. 68
  • Uses Ice Release: Thousand Killing Ice Needles and Wind Release: Vacuum Wave Slash against Sasuke. 68
  • Uses Storm Release: Laser Circus to strike the structural weaknesses of Sasuke’s Susanoo. 68
  • Develops Dust Release, eventually using it to shatter Madara’s Truth-Seeking Ball defense and severely damage his shoulder. 84 127

Wood Release

Hashirama-cell fusion allows Neji to create authentic, though initially limited, Wood Release. 18

  • Produces multiple healthy trees by combining genuine Water and Earth chakra with Yang Release and Sage Art Chakra. 18
  • Uses weakened forms of Wood Locking Wall, Thorn Kill Technique, and Tree Binding Eternal Burial. 18
  • Early techniques have short range, low durability, and heavy chakra costs. 18
  • The chest imprint left by the Hashirama cells may contain a quasi-instinctive influence capable of affecting his consciousness. 18
  • Later employs large-scale Wood Release, including Flower Tree World Advent, to reshape a battlefield into poisonous forest terrain. 68

Cursed Seals and Sealing Arts

The Caged Bird Seal is initially Neji’s greatest restraint and a component of his power development; after his Tenseigan evolution, he destroys its source and liberates the Hyuga Branch House. 6 106

  • The Caged Bird is embedded in his brain, mental energy, and spiritual consciousness; external removal would trigger its destruction mechanism. 6
  • Learns a basic variation of the Four Symbols Seal to temporarily suppress the original Earth Curse Mark. 3
  • Uses the Caged Bird Seal’s Yin-based power to balance Hashirama cells’ Yang Release during the fusion process. 16
  • Receives an Improved Earth Curse Mark from Orochimaru that can destroy his heart if he betrays or escapes Orochimaru’s control. 20
  • Bargains for and undergoes the painful removal of the Improved Earth Curse Mark, replacing it with a soul-binding Snake Contract. 35
  • The Snake Contract is broken after Neji reaches the Tenseigan and Six Paths Tier, though he continues voluntarily cooperating with Orochimaru. 110
  • The Tenseigan purifies Neji’s own Caged Bird Seal, then destroys the engraved gemstone apparatus and the First Main House Head’s sealed will that controlled all branch-house seals. 106

Summoning and Shinya

Neji forms an unconventional partnership with Shinya, a one-eyed crimson snake of Ryuchi Cave.

  • Their agreement is based on equality rather than a master-servant summoning contract. 9
  • Shinya gives Neji its Reverse Scale, which acts as an invitation; Shinya may refuse to answer and either party may dissolve the partnership. 9
  • Shinya guides Neji toward Ryuchi Cave Sage Arts and warns him of the risks of forced chakra transformation. 10 11
  • Shinya answers Neji’s summons during the confrontation at Boundary Marker Thirty-Seven. 14
  • Shinya remains a key witness to Neji’s unprecedented Sage Arts development and distrusts attempts to define their relationship through ownership or control. 11 12

Medical, Forbidden, and Spatial Techniques

Orochimaru and Kabuto broaden Neji’s skills beyond taijutsu.

  • Achieves Chunin-level medical ninjutsu proficiency under Kabuto. 8
  • Learns the fundamentals of seventeen forbidden techniques. 8
  • Uses barriers, sealing formulas, clones, terrain manipulation, and misdirection to escape stronger opponents. 26 48
  • Acquires and develops the Flying Thunder God Technique through Orochimaru’s research. 35 36
  • Uses Flying Thunder God-marked kunai for covert movement and evacuation operations. 41 45
  • Can create chains of prepared Flying Thunder God points for long-range travel between Amegakure, Konoha, Akatsuki sites, and the Sound Village. 54 61 110
  • Secretly marks the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, giving him a strategic spatial link to Akatsuki’s base. 61

Undercover Techniques

As Sake, Neji hides his Hyuga identity while operating within Akatsuki.

  • Uses a White Zetsu biological mask to alter his facial structure, muscle contours, and chakra signature. 20
  • Wears specialized lenses that disguise the Byakugan as dark-brown eyes; the lenses permit only brief Byakugan activation before overheating. 20
  • Presents Petrifying Touch and Water-Earth techniques as Sake’s personal Kekkei Genkai and combat style. 20 22
  • Avoids using identifiable techniques such as the Gentle Fist, Wood Release, and Sage Arts while maintaining his cover. 20 28
  • Maintains simultaneous false loyalty to Pain, Konan, Obito, and Zetsu, selectively exaggerating or framing intelligence to steer them against one another. 54 61
  • His Sake disguise ends when the White Zetsu mask is stripped away during his Tenseigan evolution. 106

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Shinya’s Reverse Scale — invitation-based summoning token and proof of their equal partnership. 9
  • Dark-red forehead ribbon — conceals the Caged Bird Seal and Sage transformation. 14
  • White Zetsu biological mask — formerly altered his appearance and concealed his chakra signature while acting as Sake; destroyed during Tenseigan evolution. 20 106
  • Byakugan-disguising lenses — concealed his eyes but limited active Byakugan use to roughly three seconds. 20
  • Katana — carried as part of Sake’s wandering-ninja persona and used for wind-nature training. 19 20
  • Flying Thunder God kunai — marked teleportation anchors. 41 42
  • Strength of a Hundred seal — stores chakra over time for large-scale training and sustained output. 14 18
  • Kotoamatsukami crow — possesses Shisui Uchiha’s ultimate will-altering genjutsu as a contingency, intending to reserve it for Obito rather than use it on Sasuke. 70

Relationships

  • Might Guy — Mentor in the Eight Gates. Guy believes Neji would not genuinely betray Konoha and continues to defend his character after his disappearance. 3 7
  • Rock Lee — Teammate and fellow taijutsu practitioner. Lee trains obsessively after Neji is declared a rogue ninja and refuses to accept that he betrayed the village. They later reunite warmly after Neji’s return. 7 113
  • Tenten — Teammate and romantic partner. Neji initially manipulates her cooperation during the Chunin Exams, but later worries about the pain his apparent defection causes her. After the war, she confesses her feelings, kisses him, and shares a quiet life with him while he helps at her family weapon shop. 1 8 113 120 133
  • Hinata Hyuga — Cousin. Neji defeats her without seriously harming her, instructs her during their match, and later protects her during Pain’s impending attack. After the Branch House’s liberation, he accepts responsibility for helping her gain confidence before he leaves Konoha. 2 45 140
  • Hiashi Hyuga — Clan head and uncle. Neji resents Hiashi for Hizashi’s death and the Caged Bird Seal, yet still returns to safeguard Hiashi and the main family. Following the seals’ destruction, Hiashi relies on Neji’s support for democratic Hyuga reform and requests his help protecting Hinata. 41 45 106 140 149
  • Tsunade — Hokage and covert superior. She authorizes Neji’s initial infiltration plan, receives his intelligence, and remains conflicted over whether he has become an enemy. After his Six Paths evolution, she cannot command him directly but continues to trust his current goodwill. 4 25 35 109 111
  • Orochimaru — Researcher, trainer, benefactor, and former controller. Their relationship begins as mutual exploitation but develops into guarded trust, a soul-binding contract, and eventually voluntary scientific cooperation after Neji surpasses Orochimaru’s ability to bind him. 6 35 41 110

  • Shinya — Equal summoning partner and Sage Arts guide. Both distrust domination and value a partnership that either may end. 9 11
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Fellow Orochimaru trainee, rival, political ally, and student. Neji defeats him decisively to force him to hear the truth of the Uchiha massacre, helps redirect him from revenge toward reform, and secretly trains him after the war. 8 68 70 133
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Former Chunin Exams opponent and a central figure in Neji’s future calculations. Neji recognizes Naruto’s role in ending the Indra–Asura cycle and supports him indirectly while allowing Naruto and Sasuke’s destined conflict to proceed. 2 114 127
  • Pain / Nagato — Akatsuki leader who values Neji’s usefulness but restricts his independence and does not fully trust him. Nagato later helps stabilize the Ten-Tails operation through Impure World Reincarnation and entrusts Neji with warnings about Obito’s deeper plan. 25 26 41 106 111

Story Role / Major Arcs

Chunin Exams and Sasuke Retrieval

Neji manipulates Team Guy’s route through the Forest of Death to encounter Orochimaru, intervenes against him, and receives the Earth Curse Mark. He later defeats Hinata compassionately and defeats Naruto before the Nine-Tails’ chakra can emerge. 1 2

During the Sasuke Retrieval Mission, Neji kills Kidomaru with Acupoint Kill while staging severe injuries to deceive Kabuto. At the Valley of the End, he scars his Konoha forehead protector and pretends to defect alongside Sasuke in order to reach Orochimaru. 5

Hidden Sound Training

Orochimaru accepts Neji as a special research subject in exchange for resources, training, and access to the Caged Bird Seal research. Neji endures experimental training, studies forbidden techniques and medicine, advances the Eight Gates, and discovers that the Byakugan may evolve. 6 8

He rejects a conventional summoning contract in favor of an equal partnership with Shinya, then undergoes Ryuchi Cave’s deadly Sage Arts trial. His success gives him Sage Art Chakra, horns, Sage Art Eyes, and his first meaningful means of suppressing the Caged Bird Seal. 9 11

Chakra Evolution and Hashirama Cells

Neji proposes becoming Orochimaru’s first all-affinity transformation subject, beginning with Lightning Release and pursuing the theoretical integration of all five elements with Yin-Yang Release. 10 13

When elemental conversion destabilizes, he directs the Hashirama-cell experiment himself. The fusion succeeds, weakens the Caged Bird Seal, improves chakra compatibility, and opens the path to Wood Release and further Byakugan evolution. 16 18

Sake and the Akatsuki Infiltration

Neji enters Akatsuki as Sake, using a biological mask, altered eyes, Earth-and-Water Release, and Petrifying Touch to conceal his identity. Orochimaru reinforces the arrangement with an Improved Earth Curse Mark that can kill Neji if he escapes control. 20

While serving Akatsuki, he secretly reports to both Konoha and Orochimaru. He participates in the capture of Gaara, works with Hidan on the failed Two-Tails operation, and observes the organization’s escalating war against the major villages. 21 25 26 31

During the Seven-Tails operation, Neji captures Fū while facing former comrades and witnesses Asuma’s death. The event reinforces his fear that pivotal tragedies may still occur despite his foreknowledge. 33

Curse Mark Removal and the Coming Konoha Invasion

After seven consecutive Tailed Beast sealings destabilize his Improved Earth Curse Mark, Neji negotiates with Orochimaru for its removal and the Flying Thunder God Technique. He accepts a soul-binding Snake Contract, regular examinations, and obligations concerning Orochimaru’s possible revival and Anko’s protection. 35

Three years after transmigrating, Neji possesses immense power but remains bound by the Caged Bird Seal. As Pain’s invasion approaches, Zetsu assigns him to infiltrate Konoha, observe Pain, and determine whether Nagato will betray Akatsuki—giving Neji an opportunity to protect those he still cares about. 41

He relocates Hiashi, Hinata, and Hanabi to a fortified safe house, then observes Pain’s assault from outside Konoha. The early capture of Killer B and Sasuke’s rapid development force him to abandon his former plans and prepare a riskier path toward Ten-Tails chakra and the Tenseigan. 45 48

Manipulating Akatsuki, Konoha, and Taka

Following Nagato’s death, Neji manipulates Konan and Obito against one another by reporting Konan’s planned rebellion while exaggerating the scale of her explosive-tag preparations. He maintains Obito’s trust as Sake while arranging to seek Kabuto and revive Orochimaru. 54

Neji secretly returns to Konoha and reveals critical intelligence to Jiraiya, Kakashi, and Shikaku, including Obito’s likely identity, the Eye of the Moon Plan, Sasuke’s condition, and the political danger posed by Danzo. 56

He uses Karin’s restriction seal to direct Sasuke toward Danzo, covertly marks the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path with the Flying Thunder God, and continues posing as an obedient Akatsuki observer. 61

At the Uzumaki Shrine, Neji defeats Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan Sasuke through a controlled display of Crystal, Ice, Storm, Wood, Sage, Eight Gates, and Flying Thunder God techniques. He then guides Sasuke through the truth of the Uchiha massacre and helps redirect his ambition from revenge toward becoming Hokage and reforming the shinobi system. 68 70

War Against Obito and Tenseigan Evolution

During the conflict against Obito, Neji publicly commits to ambushing Obito at a decisive moment while privately continuing to pursue the Ten-Tails chakra needed to free himself. He contributes intelligence on Obito’s Kamui weakness, the White Zetsu threat, and Sasuke’s potential cooperation with the allied forces. 89 90

Neji uses the Seventh Gate against Obito, then joins Orochimaru, reanimated Hokage, and reanimated Nagato in a modified Four Red Ray Formation. Protected by the barrier, he extracts all nine Tailed Beasts’ chakra from the incomplete Ten-Tails rather than becoming its jinchuriki. 105 106

The resulting evolution transforms his Byakugan into the Tenseigan, purifies his Caged Bird Seal, and gives him the means to locate and destroy the Hyuga Clan’s ancient seal-engraving apparatus. His act frees every Branch House member from the Main House’s inherited control. 106

Six Paths Conflict and Postwar Life

After his Tenseigan evolution, Neji displays Six Paths-tier power before the postwar leaders and declares that he will remain in Konoha while allowing Naruto and Sasuke to address Obito’s remaining threat. He continues cooperating with Orochimaru despite having broken the Snake Contract. 109 110

Neji later intervenes when Ten-Tails jinchuriki Madara threatens Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Kakashi, and Guy. He protects them with Truth-Seeking Balls, injures Madara with Dust Release, and withdraws once Naruto and Sasuke receive Hagoromo’s power, refusing to take their decisive role from them. 127

After Kaguya’s sealing, Konoha publicly presents Neji as the world’s known Six Paths-tier hero while concealing the full truth of Infinite Tsukuyomi, Kaguya, Naruto, and Sasuke. Neji rejects celebrity, works in Tenten’s weapon shop, and quietly trains Sasuke. 133

Hyuga Reform and Future Departure

With the Caged Bird system destroyed, the Hyuga Clan enters a volatile transition. Hiashi proposes a democratic clan-head election after a two-year transitional period and asks Neji to publicly support his continued authority while the reforms are established. 140

Neji agrees to help stabilize the clan and considers how to support Hinata’s development, but intends to leave Konoha with Tenten within a year after resolving the consequences of his interference in the world’s history. 140

At the Hyuga Clan gathering, Neji’s Tenseigan presence silences both Main House and Branch House dissenters, lending decisive weight to the new order despite his refusal to claim formal authority for himself. 149
