History

After the Konoha Crush

Konoha emerged from the Konoha Crush with the Third Hokage dead and Orochimaru at large. Its young shinobi were immediately drawn into the Sasuke Retrieval Mission, while Neji Hyuga began preparing to escape both the Hyuga Caged Bird Seal and Orochimaru's Curse Mark. 3 5

Tsunade became Fifth Hokage and accepted Neji's proposal to publicly defect to Orochimaru while covertly transmitting intelligence back to Konoha. This arrangement eventually placed Neji inside both Orochimaru's organization and Akatsuki under the identity Sake. 4 8 20

Akatsuki crisis and diplomatic isolation

Orochimaru and Neji's intelligence revealed Akatsuki's pursuit of the Tailed Beasts, Pain's Rinnegan, and the existence of the Ten-Tails. Konoha distributed the information to other major villages and entered an S-rank alert state. 14 15

Akatsuki's attacks on Cloud, Rock, and Mist—while Konoha initially remained intact—made the village a target of international suspicion. Other Kage interpreted Konoha's links to Jiraiya, Nagato, Sasuke, Orochimaru, and later Sake as possible evidence that it controlled Akatsuki. 31 34 59

The first Five Kage Summit collapsed after Tsunade refused to surrender Naruto to joint custody. Cloud, Rock, and Mist continued to treat Konoha's survival and its apparent successes against Akatsuki as potential deception. 34 53 59

Pain's invasion and recovery

Warned by Neji, Konoha evacuated civilians and prepared defensive positions before the Six Paths of Pain attacked. Pain nevertheless devastated much of the village, including its major buildings and defenses. 42 49

Nagato used the Reincarnation Heavenly Life Technique to restore the people killed in the invasion, but Tsunade exhausted her chakra, destroyed her Yin Seal, and fell into a coma. Jiraiya assumed temporary leadership while Yamato constructed emergency housing with Wood Release. 52 53

Fourth Shinobi World War

As Obito's plans became clear, Konoha entered full war readiness, recalled its shinobi, revised defenses against White Zetsu infiltration, and sought Sand Village's support. 71

Konoha and Sand formed the core of the initial resistance, later joined by Cloud, Rock, and Mist. The Five Kage established Konoha as the Allied Forces' command center and moved elite forces there for the final defense against Obito. 92 95 97

During the battle, Konoha's layered barriers, Earth Release walls, and allied defenders struggled to contain Obito's transformed Jinchuriki and Tailed Beast Bomb assaults. The village survived the war, but its defenses and infrastructure suffered severe damage. 101 103 108

Postwar reconstruction

After Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's sealing and the end of Infinite Tsukuyomi, Konoha concealed the full truth of the conflict. Its official account credited Neji and the other defenders with defeating Madara, Akatsuki, and the White Zetsu army, while keeping Kaguya's existence and Naruto and Sasuke's Six Paths power secret. 133

Konoha publicly presented Neji as its sole known Six Paths-tier shinobi, provided aid to other damaged villages, and used the postwar settlement to strengthen its diplomatic position. 133

Government and reform

• Hokage succession reform — Konoha adopted a new selection system that assigns 50% influence to village elections, 30% to the Elder Council, and 20% to the Land of Fire daimyo. A Hokage serves a six-year term and may be re-elected once. 139
• Expanded political representation — Tsunade began restructuring the Elder Council around Shikaku Nara, Kakashi Hatake, Inoichi Yamanaka, Hiashi Hyuga, Koharu Utatane, and Homura Mitokado, balancing military, strategy, intelligence, clan, and traditional interests. 138 139

• Evacuation and shelters — Before Pain's assault, Konoha concentrated civilians in underground shelters beneath the Ninja Academy, Hokage Building, and training grounds. 49
