Background

Obito lives with his grandmother and is isolated within the Uchiha Clan, where he is dismissed as weak and ranks at the bottom of both academics and practical combat. His repeated challenges to Kakashi leave him with a record of zero wins and nine losses. After protecting Hideki during a beating, he is branded the “shame of the Uchiha” by Uchiha Beiying. 2 9

He becomes Hideki’s closest friend after intervening against the bullying. The pair begin experimenting with an improvised hydrogen-based combination ninjutsu: Obito supplies kerosene, cotton swabs, firecrackers, and eventually the ignition needed for the technique. 1 2

Despite his poor reputation, he consistently protects his companions. He attempts to take responsibility for the fight involving Hideki, refuses to expose their secret to Minato without Hideki’s approval, and confronts Uchiha Retsu alone to keep Retsu from targeting Hideki. 5 6 19

Academy conflicts

Obito joins Hideki in confronting the Uchiha children who bullied them. Although his early Great Fireball attempt publicly fails, he protects Hideki from Uchiha Ruohuo’s attacks and helps enable the hydrogen explosion that defeats the group. 9 10

The aftermath frightens Obito more than it excites him. He worries that Ruohuo’s influential family will retaliate, yet accepts Hideki’s demand that they train harder rather than remain helpless. 11

Uchiha retaliation

When Retsu threatens to pursue Hideki, Obito secretly meets him at an Uchiha training ground and offers himself as the target instead. Retsu easily overpowers him, but Kakashi and Hideki intervene before he is seriously injured. 19 20

Obito then joins Hideki in preparing Hydrogen Release while Kakashi delays Retsu. Their strongest attack fails when Retsu redirects the hydrogen balloon with Wind Release, exposing the gap between Academy students and an experienced Chūnin. 20

Graduation and Team 7

Obito trains intensively with Ying Shu and Kakashi, using Shadow Clones to maintain school attendance while they prepare to graduate early. He supplies the Fire Release portion of their planned three-person Hydrogen Release Cannon. 28

He passes Minato’s five-minute survival assessment through teamwork, disguises, smoke bombs, and an unconventional attempt to restrain Minato. He officially becomes a Genin alongside Ying Shu and Kakashi. 31 32 33

Sharingan awakening

During an encounter with a Kumogakure spy, Obito returns to find an explosion and assumes Kakashi and Ying Shu have died. His grief turns to rage, and his Sharingan awakens when he finds figures he believes are responsible. 43

After discovering that his friends survived, he vents his fear and anger by beating Kakashi until all three collapse laughing. Root later attempts to question the team, but Obito prepares to reveal his Sharingan before Minato and Kushina force Root to withdraw. 43 44
