Background
Kakashi was the son of Sakumo Hatake, Konoha's famed White Fang. As an Academy student, he stood at the top of his class and had trained in his father's swordsmanship from childhood, leaving him far ahead of Obito in direct combat 5 6 20.
He initially regarded Hideki and Obito as irresponsible underachievers. He condemned their supposed use of Explosive Tags, defeated Obito with a clone during sparring, and challenged Hideki after hearing that the pair had hospitalised a shinobi 5 6 15. Hideki's Rasengan shattered Kakashi's Earth-Style Wall in their ninjutsu contest, forcing him to reevaluate the strength they had concealed 15.
After secretly covering for Hideki and Obito's absence from class with clones, Kakashi began observing their training and experiments more closely 14 17. Hideki recruited him as the Lightning Release component of their prospective three-person Hydrogen Release, and Kakashi accepted in part because he wanted companionship as well as strength 18 22.
The scandal surrounding Sakumo's failed Kannabi Bridge mission left Kakashi frightened and emotionally isolated. Hideki and Obito promised to stand by him, then pushed him to train and graduate early with them 26 27. Kakashi later passed Minato's graduation assessment with them and officially became a Konoha Genin 31 33 35.
Sakumo ultimately survived the public backlash rather than following the fate Kakashi had feared. His recovery allowed Kakashi to retain a close relationship with his father, who continued teaching him Hatake swordsmanship and supported his growth beyond the limits of the White Fang's own style 45 101 214.
Following his early battlefield experiences, Kakashi received intensive guidance from Orochimaru, who developed his Lightning Release sword theory and later left him secret snake techniques and a map to Ryūchi Cave. He subsequently trained with the Snake Princess and Samehada, becoming a Sage Art user 120 126 216 234.
Appearance
Kakashi is a white-haired boy who habitually wears a mask and is often noted for his detached, “dead-fish” eyes 5 15.
- White hair 5
- Wears a mask, partly concealing a beauty mark near his mouth 15
- Carries a short sword and later a high-quality imitation of Sakumo's White Fang 32 50
- Wears a forehead protector after graduating 33
- Later carries specially forged Twin-Blade Thunder Fang short blades and the living chakra-devouring sword Samehada 184 214
- In Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode, develops snake-like ocular traits, stiffened hair, and prominent Sage Art markings around his eyes 234
Personality
Kakashi is proud, disciplined, and highly competitive. His status as the Academy's top student and Sakumo's son gives him confidence in his own ability, but it also makes him particularly sensitive to Hideki's provocations and hidden strength 15.
Beneath his aloof manner, he is observant, curious, and lonely. He notices the synchronized behavior of Hideki and Obito, secretly follows them to learn about their combination ninjutsu, and envies the bond they share 12 17. His willingness to join their training group reflects a growing desire to belong rather than remain isolated 18.
His father's disgrace exposes his vulnerability. Though he initially denies that anything is wrong, fear for Sakumo overwhelms him when the White Fang disappears; he later channels that fear into training alongside his companions 26 27.
Kakashi matures into a composed and pragmatic combatant. He can remain calm while injured, outnumbered, or detained, favoring escape routes, deception, and efficient counterattacks over reckless confrontations 126 176 262. His dry sarcasm and competitive banter with Obito and Hideki remain intact even after the trio become elite operatives 155 176 239.
He is deeply loyal to his comrades and regards protecting them as the purpose of both his swordsmanship and Lightning Release. Orochimaru's instruction reinforces this conviction during Kakashi's confrontation with Hanzō 166. Though Orochimaru's defection leaves him conflicted, Kakashi continues to address him as his teacher and hesitates to treat him as a simple enemy 262.
Abilities & Skills
Earth Release
Kakashi is proficient in Earth Release techniques and uses them defensively, offensively, and for battlefield control.
- Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall — Creates an earthen defensive wall marked by a dog-head design; used to stop Retsu's attack on Obito and during his contest with Hideki 15 19.
- Earth Release: Underworld Swamp — Turned the ground beneath Minato into mud during the graduation assessment 32.
- Earth Release: Headhunter Jutsu — Used underground positioning to seize Minato's ankle as part of Team 7's layered trap 32.
- Combined Earth Release, smoke, and transformations with Ying Shu to deceive and defeat a stronger Kumogakure shinobi 42.
- Later employed Earth Release as part of large-scale Team 7 battlefield operations, including elevating captives beyond an enemy force's immediate reach 203.
Swordsmanship and Taijutsu
Kakashi's close-combat ability is his greatest individual advantage over his peers. He decisively defeated Obito with a clone, fought Uchiha Retsu using Hatake swordsmanship, and assessed enemies quickly in live combat 6 20 42.
- Uses a short sword in combat and inherited training in Hatake swordsmanship 20 32.
- Can pressure opponents in close range, though Retsu's superior experience and taijutsu overwhelmed him 20.
- Recognized that the Kumogakure shinobi's swordsmanship was mediocre despite his greater strength, helping Ying Shu formulate their counterplan 42.
- Continued training directly under Sakumo and ultimately surpassed the limits of the White Fang's single-blade instruction 68 214.
- Uses the chakra-metal Twin-Blade Thunder Fang pair, which can store Lightning Release chakra and bear his Flying Thunder God markings 184 227.
- Fought the reanimated Tobirama Senju with Shadow Clones, smoke, twin blades, Lightning Release Clones, and Flying Thunder God tactics, briefly catching the Second Hokage off guard 227.
- Held Ebizo at swordpoint during Team 7's seizure of Sunagakure's elders, immediately detecting Chiyo's attempt to draw a concealed weapon 203.
Lightning Release
Kakashi's Lightning Release makes him essential to the planned three-person Hydrogen Release technique.
- Studies Lightning Release with Ying Shu to improve their future chakra coordination 22.
- Was selected by Ying Shu to perform the electrolysis component of Hydrogen Release, while Obito provides ignition 18.
- Received a B-rank Lightning Release technique from Minato after graduating 36.
- Lightning Release: Shadowless Lightning Serpent — A sword-supporting Lightning Release developed from Orochimaru's theory. It functions as a lightning substitute blade and enabled Kakashi to strike, feint, and steal supplies while surrounded by Kirigakure shinobi 126.
- Lightning Release: Lightning Serpent Bite and Shadow-Hiding Lightning Serpent — Serpent-shaped lightning attacks used for assassination and high-speed engagements 164 173.
- Lightning Blade — A refined fusion of Lightning Release and swordsmanship that Kakashi employs alongside his Byakugan and Sage Art 214 238.
- Sage Art: Lightning Dragon — A Ryūchi Cave-enhanced Lightning Release technique formed while maintaining Sage Mode 234.
Byakugan and Sensory Perception
Kakashi acquired a Hyuga Byakugan after the Kirigakure conflict, gaining a dōjutsu better suited to his chakra reserves than the Sharingan of the original timeline 128 147.
- Uses the Byakugan for long-range observation, chakra-flow analysis, and battlefield reconnaissance 146 166.
- His spatial perception is exceptionally strong, making him Minato's preferred candidate among Team 7 for Flying Thunder God training 147.
- The Hyuga Clan questioned him about the eye but also taught him additional Byakugan techniques, partly due to his connections to Sakumo and Orochimaru 155.
- Can use the Byakugan to assess immense chakra concentrations and detect opponents' movements even amid large-scale combat 146 238.
Space-Time Ninjutsu
Kakashi developed an unconventional, combat-oriented application of the Flying Thunder God Technique.
- Began Flying Thunder God training under Minato after Team 7's Jonin-promotion mission, though he initially made little progress 147 154.
- Uses marked Twin-Blade Thunder Fang weapons to maintain awareness of his Flying Thunder God marks and create direct offensive routes 227 265.
- Flying Thunder God: Slash — Teleports into a sword strike, used to catch Tobirama off guard and attach Explosive Tags to his Impure World Reincarnation body 227.
- Attempted to mark Orochimaru during the attack on Konoha, but Orochimaru detected the ploy and transferred the mark to a white snake 262.
Sage Art and Samehada
Kakashi became a Ryūchi Cave Sage through training with the Snake Princess and an unusual partnership with Samehada.
- Samehada absorbs and stores Sage Art chakra, allowing Kakashi to access natural energy through Human-Sword Unity rather than relying solely on his own reserves 234 261.
- Can enter Sage Mode while fighting and performing complex Lightning Release techniques 234.
- Returns Samehada to Ryūchi Cave when necessary and can summon it back for combat 234 262.
- His Sage Mode markedly enhances his Byakugan, Lightning Blade, speed, and sensory ability, though prolonged battle can deplete his stored Sage Chakra 261 262.
Tactical Awareness and Teamwork
Kakashi adapts quickly to complex plans despite preferring direct competence and individual discipline.
- Supplied Team 7 with ninja tools from his home, including smoke bombs used in their graduation strategy 31.
- Coordinated with Obito and Ying Shu to restrain Minato through transformations, Earth Release, feigned injury, and hidden attacks 32.
- Trusted Ying Shu's instructions during the Kumogakure ambush, immediately executing a smoke-screen and underground-deception plan 42.
- Waited with Obito for Ying Shu at the river instead of escaping Kushina alone 40.
- Survived Kirigakure's pursuit while severely wounded by combining Transformation Technique, swordsmanship, Lightning Release, stolen equipment, and a signal flare 125 126.
- Became an effective ANBU and Root operative, using smoke, clones, Explosive Tags, dōjutsu, and teleportation in layered assassination tactics 154 173 227.
- Works fluidly with Obito and Hideki in high-level operations, including hostage seizures, anti-puppet warfare, and confrontations with Hanzō and reanimated Hokage 203 227.
Equipment
- Short sword; later a high-quality imitation of Sakumo Hatake's White Fang 32 50
- Ninja tool pouch 31
- Smoke bombs taken from his home for Team 7's tactics 31 42
- Shuriken and kunai 39 46
- Konoha forehead protector and ninja registration booklet 33 35
- Twin-Blade Thunder Fang chakra-metal short blades, acquired from the Seven Ninja Swordsmen's spoils and reforged in the Land of Iron 184 214
- Samehada, a chakra-devouring living sword that he treats as both a weapon and a companion 214 234
- ANBU mask, uniform, armor, and sword issued upon joining Minato Squad's Third Team 154 155
- Gas mask and Tsunade's antidote for operations involving poison 165
Relationships
- Sakumo Hatake — Father and the White Fang of Konoha. Kakashi deeply admires him, but Sakumo's failed mission and public condemnation leave Kakashi terrified for his father's fate 22 26 27. Sakumo survives the crisis, continues teaching Kakashi, and remains a warm, proud father whose own swordsmanship eventually becomes insufficient to contain Kakashi's growth 45 214 238.
- Ying Shu — Initially a rival whom Kakashi distrusts and considers a poor combat student. He becomes Kakashi's teammate, tactical partner, and source of support during Sakumo's crisis 5 18 26 42. Their relationship develops into close comradeship; Kakashi supports Ying Shu through multiple wars, ANBU service, Sage training, and the escalating conflict with Orochimaru 154 203 262.
- Uchiha Obito — Longtime Academy rival whom Kakashi can defeat easily in individual combat. Their relationship gradually shifts into genuine comradeship through Team 7 6 18 32. Though they continue bickering and competing, Kakashi recognizes Obito's immense growth and fights beside him as a fellow ANBU, Sage, and Root operative 154 176 238.
- Minato Namikaze — Graduation examiner and later Team 7's guiding Jonin. Minato is impressed by Kakashi and his teammates' rapid growth and coordinated tactics 30 32 35. He later teaches Kakashi Flying Thunder God and retains him in his personal ANBU team after Team 7's formal dissolution 147 154.
- Kushina Uzumaki — Conducted Team 7's bell test in Minato's place. Kakashi quickly concluded that fighting her directly was impossible and fled with his teammates 39 40.
- Uchiha Retsu — A stronger Chūnin opponent. Kakashi delayed Retsu so Hideki and Obito could prepare their combined attack, but was outmatched in close combat 20.
- Orochimaru — Kakashi witnessed Orochimaru rescue the trio from Retsu and identify the elemental techniques contained in the scroll Orochimaru gave Ying Shu 21. Orochimaru later became Kakashi's mentor, helped him develop Lightning Release swordsmanship, left him snake techniques and a map to Ryūchi Cave, and treated him with near-parental concern 120 126 216. Orochimaru's later defection leaves Kakashi torn between duty and gratitude, even as he continues testing Kakashi's judgment in battle 262.
- Tsunade — Initially claimed Kakashi as her intended student on Kushina's behalf, but Orochimaru ultimately became his primary instructor 118 120. Tsunade remains a powerful authority figure within his wider found family and supervises Team 7's later training exercises 239.
- Tobirama Senju — Fought Kakashi while reanimated and simultaneously critiqued his Body Flicker, clone coordination, and combat habits. Kakashi adapted to the instruction in real time and temporarily defeated him through a layered Flying Thunder God tactic 227.
- Samehada — Kakashi treats the chakra-devouring sword like a pet and training partner. Samehada's ability to absorb Sage Art chakra becomes the foundation of Kakashi's distinctive Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode 214 234.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Academy Rivalry
Kakashi begins as the Academy's aloof top student, openly criticising Hideki and Obito's methods and maintaining a large gap over Obito in sparring 5 6. His confidence is shaken after Hideki destroys his Earth-Style Wall with the Rasengan 15.
Joining Hideki and Obito
Curiosity about their combination ninjutsu leads Kakashi to follow Hideki and Obito. Though initially treated as an intruder and then a sparring target, he agrees to train with them and becomes the group's Lightning Release specialist 17 18 22.
Uchiha Retaliation
Kakashi intervenes to protect Obito from Uchiha Retsu, then buys time against the Chūnin while Hideki and Obito prepare Hydrogen Release 19 20. Orochimaru's intervention saves all three when Retsu prepares to strike 21.
White Fang Crisis
When ANBU visit the Hatake estate over Sakumo's failed mission, Kakashi conceals his distress before finally breaking down over his father's disappearance 26 27. Hideki and Obito commit to graduating early and becoming stronger with him 27. Sakumo later recovers, remains alive, and resumes an active role in Kakashi's life and training 45 101.
Graduation and Team 7
Kakashi passes Minato's survival assessment through coordinated attacks, Earth Release traps, transformations, and deception with Obito and Ying Shu 31 32. He becomes a registered Konoha Genin and later takes part in Team 7's bell test 33 35 39.
Kumogakure Ambush
After Team 7 flees Kushina's bell test, Kakashi and Ying Shu face a Kumogakure shinobi outside the village. Kakashi survives the enemy's close-range assault, helps execute an underground feint, and supports Ying Shu after the final Hydrogen Release trap incapacitates their opponent 41 42.
Chūnin Exams and Wartime Growth
Kakashi quickly defeats Kirigakure's Sen Suiryū with two precise sword strikes during the Chūnin Exams, earning acclaim as the White Fang's son 101. He subsequently endures increasingly dangerous wartime missions, developing from an elite child swordsman into a battlefield tactician capable of facing older and stronger shinobi 101 125 126.
Kirigakure Pursuit and the Byakugan
During a reconnaissance mission, Kakashi is isolated and hunted by Kirigakure forces for more than a day. Even while suffering wounds to his leg, arm, and back, he resists capture through disguises, Lightning Release, swordsmanship, stolen equipment, and a signal flare 124 126. Afterward, he receives a Hyuga Byakugan, transforming his reconnaissance capacity and enabling a new path distinct from the Sharingan-dependent fate of the original timeline 128 146 147.
Jonin Mission at Kannabi Bridge
Kakashi reunites with Hideki and Obito at the frontline camp, visibly relieved that Hideki survived the preceding conflict 145. At Kannabi Bridge, he takes the sentry-elimination role during Team 7's assault, combining Lightning Release ambushes with Obito's Fire Release while Hideki attacks the main defensive line 145 146. Team 7 then destroys the bridge through their revived cooperative dragon-based ninjutsu 146.
ANBU and Root Service
After becoming a Jonin, Kakashi joins Minato's Hokage-direct Third ANBU Team alongside Hideki and Obito 154. The trio later operates as Root's “three giants,” undertaking A-rank investigations, anti-puppet warfare, hostage operations, and direct engagements against Kage-level threats 155 184 203. Kakashi's discipline, Byakugan, Lightning Release, and swordsmanship make him the group's primary precision fighter and assassin 187 203.
Ryūchi Cave Sage Training
Orochimaru's secret snake scroll leads Kakashi to Ryūchi Cave, where he trains under the Snake Princess and integrates Samehada into his Sage Art practice 216 234. He leaves the Sage Land after mastering a functional Sage Mode, returning with enhanced Lightning Release, snake-based abilities, and the capacity to summon Samehada when needed 234 261.
Orochimaru's Defection
During Orochimaru's attack on Konoha, Kakashi confronts his former teacher despite knowing that he lacks the Sage Chakra needed to win a direct battle 262. He attempts to mark Orochimaru with Flying Thunder God, but Orochimaru exposes and redirects the plan through a white snake before cryptically telling Kakashi that he must make the same choice at a decisive future moment 262. Kakashi later continues fighting Orochimaru with Samehada-enhanced Sage Mode, but Orochimaru's escape with Madara's power leaves the conflict unresolved 267 269.
